Well my cleaners were awesome, haha. They put up with so much mess from us all in the kitchen, my roomie dying her hair and leaving dye everywhere, me not having my room remotely in a position to be able to be vacuumed, my roomie not having her room remotely in a position to be able to be vacuumed........and the boys, OH THE BOYS.

Our regular cleaner (who never locked us out) went on a break for a week - got a really strict cleaner who gave us a warning on Monday, but on Wednesday and Friday they cleaned the kitchens to an 'as new' state.
Okay, great! I'll have a closer look at Claycroft, Heronbank and Lakeside then.
Heronbank and Lakeside seem very nice, close to water and all. A bit on the expensive side though. The Warwick webpage says something about work on a new hall of residence close to Heronbank and Lakeside. Will this work still be going on in October, and if so, how disturbing is it?
Most likely. They haven't started anything near there yet, as far as I know. The current halls are taking about 18 months to build - they might start the new ones soon in order to be ready for 2012/13?
EDIT: Looks like they are about to/only just submitted planning for it - I doubt they will be able to do it in time for 2012/13, more like construction will start in 2011/12. Note that the university have also submitted planning for three Tennis/Netball courts (in addition a croquet lawn, two BBQ areas and a outdoor gym equipment facility) last month - construction might also start there as well next academic year.
The new halls will be built to the right of the new courts, with a possible second development on the left of the courts.

I suppose there's no point in worrying too much about it then, just hope for the best. Looks like Lakeside is closer to the potential construction sites than Heronbank?
I hope they finish those tennis courts/BBQ areas/outdoor gym quickly!
Do you get locks or anything similar to prevent people stealing from your food cupboard?
If no, can we take measures ourselves?
This may seem a bit obsessive, but i'm a tad OCD.
Where I was, there were no locks and nowhere you could reasonably attach a padlock or similar. If it is food that doesn't need to be refrigerated however, the easiest way to keep it safe would be to keep it in your room.
when you apply, if you state that you're vegetarian, will it have any effect on which hall you're allocated to? or will they just try to put you in a vegetarian corridor within the hall you would've been put in anyway?
It certainly won't affect which hall you're allocated to. This information is only used to sort people within each hall. I don't know if they will try and make the entire kitchen meat-free; you might just find that there are one or two other vegetarians on your corridor.

In case you (or anyone else) wanted a bit more information on this - work on the recreation area (tennis courts etc.) is supposed to begin this week and work on new halls of residence is apparently likely to start later this academic year so there's a good chance some sort of work will be going on in October. Since it hasn't started yet I can't comment on how disruptive it is but it'll probably have more effect on LS3 and LS4 which are currently post-graduate blocks.

Thanks a lot for letting us know. I'll probably put Heronbank or Claycroft as my first choice then, and Lakeside second or third.

How did you find that out? Is it through Warwick Accommodation messages/posters sent for Lakeside?
- you choose five or six halls - one of these may be a 30 week en-suite, and another may be a 39 week en-suite - for the remaining options, undergraduates can choose from Cryfield, Rootes, Tocil, Westwood and Whitefields
This was the case for 2010/11 entry (you get to choose first, second, third, etc preference, you don't need to pick en suites if you don't want, just there are restrictions on the maximum number of ensuites you can select).
For 2009/10 entry it was 'order your preferences from 1, 2, 3, etc. Pick a min of 3 (max of 6), one of which is an ensuite'.
Things may change, so I can't say with 100% certainty that this will be the case for 11/12.

I'm vegetarian, put it on my form, and it made NO difference. I was in a kitchen with seven meat eaters. To be honest it wasn't so bad, even though I shared a fridge shelf with the biggest meat eater of the lot, haha. They all understood that meat icks me out, and they always kept it separate from my things. Even in the freezer I got a pretty awesome flat though.
You can't expect them to put together flats based solely on vegetarianism. It's unrealistic. Plus other personality traits are more important, and they do try to put together groups of people they think will live together happily.
Honestly it's fine being the only veggie in a kitchen. You cope. And I'm a pretty obsessive veggie too.
Insite just posted this in the news section with regards to the Westwood and Lakeside construction work. The courts should be done by the end of term 3.

The warden of Heronbank/Lakeside sent an email out yesterday. I think some kitchen reps in other blocks might have been told before then by their residential staff.
On a slightly related note I will post a review of Lakeside at some point in the next couple of days, after I get some suitable photos.
