All over the place, but I'd say they will be more likely to apply to halls closer to the social sciences building - see the post above for that

I didn't get much from that. What are the social science buildings from your own knowledge?

30 weeks ensuite limits you to Benefactors, Jack Martin and Arthur Vick.

In terms of proximity to Social Sciences, Benefactors is closest - there are 70 places available there. Jack Martin is next furthest away and Arthur Vick is in the vicinity of JM. Both of these have around 400 places. Cryfield, Rootes, Bluebell and Whitefields are all pretty close as well, these are not en-suites apart from Bluebell and vary in contract length.

But please check out the front of this thread - there's a guide that will help you if you want to see reviews and photos of the halls (oh and a map - the building you want is social sciences )

Note that the colour scheme is out of date (Heronbank isn't available to first years, and Bluebell is in the yellow bit below Rootes)

That was helpful
thanks

Hi so I'd really like to get into Tocil and thinking of putting it first.... so the thing is probably after Tocil if I couldn't get in there I'd be most likely to go into Westwood. BUT if I put Westwood 2nd does that put down my chances of getting into Tocil? Would I be better putting an over subscribed one (like JM, AV ?) as my 2nd choice in the hope of being more likely to get into Tocil? Or am I just reading into it waaay too much?

There is probably an optimal way to apply in order to maximise your chances of getting Tocil, but I'm not exactly sure what it is (and if I did post it on here, lots of people would do the same and then it wouldn't be the best choice).

Anyway, it's true that there are more popular halls, but if you do put it second you must be prepared to live in it should you get it. You do have it second preference, after all. And yes, people in the past have commented on how they got Westwood after putting it even 3rd or 4th. But the fact that Westwood is your actual second choice means that if you don't get Tocil and happen to be placed in an undersubscribed hall, it would be Westwood, which wouldn't be that bad.

What ever you do, don't put Rootes above Westwood. I'd say JM is more over subscribed than AV (dunno where Benefactors comes into this). Cryfield seems quite popular as well.

Check out last year's TSR members' accommodation stats on applications. If you don't understand anything about it just ask

I would like an en suite, but I don't really need the 39 week let-I think I'll go for Arthur Vick/Benefactors instead. What would you recommend?

I'd say JM over AV and Benefactors if you want a 30 wk en suite :p:

What type of social setting do you look for?

Last year we all were automatically registered onto the electoral register with the respective district (west of Gibbet Hill Road are in Warwickshire, the rest in Cov). I presume they did the same this year.

Perhaps search your emails from last year - there may have been one saying that if you want to opt out you need to email someone to remove yourself from it.

So does that mean my likelihood of getting into Tocil is incredibly slim. I applied for:

Tocil
Westwood
Rootes
Whitefields
Lakeside

UGH damn! Also what accommodation did/are you stay in? (first year)

Everyone in halls has been sent a card to vote on campus.

Does anyone know if any of the accommodations have racks for storing bikes safely?

I don't know exactly what method they use to allocate the halls based on the preferences, but what I will say is that if you don't get Tocil, you are pretty much guaranteed to get Westwood (where I was) as it's fairly large and usually undersubscribed.

I'm pretty sure that they all do, but don't quote me on that. From the ones I've seen, the system is that there's a closed off indoor space requiring a key to get in, then you're supposed to lock the bike as well inside. Around the academic buildings, there are also bike racks but these are accessible to anyone.

Why is it undersubscribed, honestly is there something I should know about Westwood?
How was your experience, house mates etc?

I think the main thing that puts people off is that it's a bit further away from central campus than other halls. But I really didn't find that much of a problem. A 10/15 minute walk to lectures isn't that far, unless you're doing something biology-related in which case you'll have a much longer walk to Gibbet Hill.

There are some facilities that Westwood is quite well-placed for: Tesco and the learning grid. There's also a separate postroom and launderette to avoid using the main one at Rootes, as well as washing machines in the buildings.

My experience was absolutely amazing. I'm quite a quiet sort of person but what was nice was that they put you with a mixture of quiet people and people who are a bit more sociable so we all had fun. You do get to meet a lot of new people at once as there are up to 26 people per kitchen. The kitchens are larger to account for this.

I have a question regarding housing which I cant seem to find any info about here and I would very much appreciate your input as alot of you seem to be studying at Warwick atm.

I am from overseas (Scandinavia), doing postgraduate study (MSc Finance) at Warwick 2011/2012 and I am about to apply for accomodation. You are promted to choose 5 preferences (mandatory, and a 6th which is optional). Now from my list (I assume this has something to do with postgraduate accomodation) I only get a selected few options, which are:

Claycroft
Tocil
Heronbank
Lakeside

In addition I also get

Coventry (Large shared house)
Kenilworth (Small shared house)
Leamington (en-suite / small shared house or Large shared house)

I wish to live on campus so my first choices are Claycroft, Tocil, Heronbank and Lakeside but I need to choose a 5th one in order to progress in the application form. Does anyone have any info on those extra accomodations? How far is it from campus? Living Standard? etc.

I appriciate your help!

Thanks

Check out this post on off campus options.

Now, I'm not sure if postgrads get put in private accommodation or things similar to what you get on campus (eg Liberty Park, Paradise Place in Coventry and Union Court in Leamington). If it is in these areas, it's pretty good living standards. However, private houses can vary in quality. Coventry is closer, Leamington further away, Kenilworth quite close to campus - it's between Leam and Uni. But that's discussed in the post I linked to above. Ah, I seemed to not talk about Kenilworth, but ttoby will probably have some things to say about that:

Thanks alot mate, I really appriciate it!

Also EDIT:

I think Ill pick Leamington soley based on that post :-)

Also do you know the difference in "small shared house" and "large...", obviously aside from the size factor! How many ppl per house or something like that?

Again - Thanks!

EDIT2:

It dosent matter, I chose a large house to be more sociable, should I end up outside of campus!

Thanks

I'm currently living in Kenilworth and it certainly has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

The bus journey is about 15 minutes, although this varies depending on the traffic and where you live in Kenilworth.

You are guaranteed to get a seat on the number 12 bus, and in fact you can usually get two seats together. If you live in North Leamington or in Canley in Coventry then I've heard that it's quite common for buses to be too full to take you on. I haven't lived in either of those areas so I can't say how bad the problem is.

There are several supermarkets in Kenilworth: Sainsbury's, Waitrose (depending on budget!!) and a few smaller supermarkets. However if you live away from the centre of Kenilworth then you may find that it's easier to just go to the Tesco by the university.

Generally pretty safe in terms of crime.

Disadvantages:

The area is quite hilly, so if you're planning on cycling then bear this in mind.

Not many people live in Kenilworth so don't be surprised if your house is the only student property in the area.

The number 12 only runs every half hour, and every hour on Sundays. For comparison, the buses from Coventry and Leamington run every 15 minutes usually, but this varies at peak times and evenings.

There are other buses: X17 (mon-sat), U2 (sat), U17 (sun) but if you have a Travel Coventry bus card then you would need to pay extra to use these so in practise you would only be using the 12. I'll also point out that the X17 will drop you off at the cross roads south of Gibbet Hill so you would have a short walk to campus.

Personally, I'd say Kenilworth is not the best place to live overall, due mainly to the feeling that it's a bit isolated from everyone else. If you are particularly interested in living on campus then in terms of atmosphere, Kenilworth is very different to that.

I just saw that post after I made mine. Yeah, I would agree with that choice. If you want somewhere more sociable then Leamington is definitely the place to go and you really want to avoid Kenilworth.
