Hello everyone I'm an offer holder (insurance) for a first law degree. I would like a hall which is sociable enough for me to make friends from all countries, and is quiet enough for me to study or have my private time when I want to be alone. If possible, I would like to have en-suite for 39 weeks. (Only Lakeside suits me) I would like to know is Lakeside that good, and whether there are other good suggestions suitable for me?
PS. I'm from Hong Kong and I love football and photography. Cheers.
As Warwick is your insurance you may not get first choice. Lakeside suits your needs but the new accommodation Bluebells also will fit your criteria and its more centrally located.

Lakeside is a perfectly good hall. You'll be put with people of a similar personality based on how you fill in the form, but in general, Lakeside is one of the quieter halls. You'll probably find plenty of other british and international students around due to the 39 week let. Another hall that fits your criteria is Bluebell. This will be brand new for your year but it is more expensive.
Actually what is the main difference between 30 weeks and 39 weeks? Are there other suggestions I need to choose 6 preferences.
the only difference is the overall price you pay and whether you get to stay there during the christmas and easter holidays
i always think other than if you want en suite or not halls are irrelevant as most are fairly social and have a wide mix of people, and flat mates often suite the questionnaire you fill out so I wouldnt worry about it to much
If I go home at holidays, I will leave my stuff in the room if it is a 39-week one? And I need to pack all the things to home if it is a 30-week one?
If it's 39 weeks then yes, you can leave your stuff in your room. If it's 30 weeks then they provide a limited amount of storage space - a lockable cupboard in your room and/or a store room shared with other people on your corridor.

To add to that in JM and AV I know it's one store room for each block - that's 100 or so students for a pretty tiny room! Priority is given to international students though. As for your alternatives, there is the option of moving some stuff to a friend's room who has a 39 week let, but it could make their place a bit cluttered.
My preference in terms of accommodation was: 1. tocil 2. whitefield 3. westwood 4. rootes 5. Lakeside
what do you think I'll get? I said I love baking cakes, playing sports, financial times etc LOOOOOL random much?
Your description won't affect which hall you end up in - that's all automated. Since Tocil tends to be oversubscribed, and Westwood (and I think Whitefields as well) tends to be undersubscribed then you'll probably end up in Whitefields or Westwood.
i've heard that the noise from the SU keeps people at Benefactors awake all night. Is that really true?
It seems to be a matter of which side of the building you live on, some people at the front can hear it sometimes I think. But Whitefields is the worst for hearing SU noise as far as I am aware.
Hey - is there any chance you could rewrite your experiences of Benefactors to be more like this? (Eg short summary, pros, cons and photos if you have any!) Basically, this thread is collating student's experiences of accommodations and photos too if they have any. You can read more about what others have wrote (for inspiration or just basically what to write on) in the 3rd and 4th posts
It really would help future applicants with their accommodation applications (since Benefactors is the smallest halls on campus it is more difficult to find people who can help out )
Re-write of Benefactors life:
Block: n/a
Summary: Can apply for sharing rooms or single rooms, all en-suite. Good location, mainly for nights out, Costcutters and the SU, but not too bad for getting to lectures etc.
Pros: - En-suite rooms or shared between just two people - Large common room = frequent drinking games/pre-drinking sessions - Good sized rooms - Good location, 2 minutes to the SU but not as easy to hear music from the SU as some other halls, very close to the pick-up location of coaches going to clubs in various places, as well as the taxi rank being almost right outside (there's also a kebab van on late evenings) - Easy to get to know everyone since there are only 70 people, this means you can meet a variety of people and it tends to lead to less seperation/disjointness among people (the common room helps too) - Like all halls, I think, we have the kitchen cleaned 3 times a week, and our rooms/bathrooms cleaned once a week. (This year at least the cleaners have been really friendly ) We also have the common room cleaned, not sure how often though. Note: you still have to take out your own rubbish like everywhere else though
Cons: - Large amount of people (22) sharing each kitchen, this hasn't been a problem as there is loads of cupboard space and people tend to naturally eat at different times - Kitchen can get a bit hot, again not hard to deal with - 30 week let means having to move most of your stuff out each holiday (there is a storage space above the wardrobe to leave stuff in and they may let you leave a few things in the storage space for International students) - Common room is often described as a fish-bowl but it's just something you end up getting used to and can lead to easier communication if you can lip-read - There are offices on the ground floor which is more odd rather than a con as it makes no difference to life in Benefactors
(Sadly I wasn't allowed to upload photos for some reason :/ but I will instead put a link to a youtube video from a few years ago that should give a good idea of the common room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzR3DuKIaCw though at about 3.25 onwards it just gets a bit strange...)
I went for; 1. Lakeside 2. Westwood 3./4./5. some other stuff. From what I've heard Westwood is quite easy to get into, so the others are just a few that I have a slight preference for. Lakeside is the dream though :P
I received an Accommodation.doc from the university yesterday (before I'd received the offer).
I believe Claycroft, Lakeside and Tocil are available. Tocil apparently has 39 and 50 week lets.
As a potential postgraduate student (BAC prog.), do you folks think that a 39-week let will suffice?
PS: Thanks to @TheTallOne for redirecting me to this thread...
It depends...if you plan to stain the summer a 50 week let is whAt you want. A 39 week let will invlude the spring and winter holidays and the 50 week will include the summer holidays.
Oh crap, I heard Westwood is terrible! 25 to a kitchen? :O and apparently a **** accommodation? damn!
It's not that bad!! I was there last year. The kitchens are larger to make up for there being more people, although they do get messy very quickly between cleaner visits. In some ways it's a good thing because you get to know lots of people very quickly.

There is never actually 25 to a kitchen, it's more like 16-20 (and the kitchens are larger to make up for it). Westwood is actually quite nice, you get a massive room and get to know lots of people.
