The Warwick Accommodation Thread (+Guide in Post#1)

Some of you may call me crazy - but I really like Westwood. Does anyone know if I put it as my first choice is there still that chance that I will be sharing or will it rule me out of sharing?

I doubt you'll have to share unless you come as an insurance. They have big allocated rooms for sharing, they wouldn't move anyone into your room. Worth calling accommodation for advice though.

I think it's improbable that we will end up in Westwood sharing as it's usually for students who firmed late or shunted over from somewhere very over-subscribed. However, I guess we'll never know!

What course did you firm?

I'm glad It's not just me, It's such a nice looking place, and the windows are huge! that finally sold it to me, I think I'll email the accommodation people to ask about sharing anyway, I've firmed maths :smile:

Exactly how much of a problem is it moving all your stuff out in a 30 week let place? Because I don't live in the UK so it'd be crazy to have to carry all that around Europe...

Quick question: Which is better, AV or JM?

Preferably in terms of:
- Sociability
- Convenience (ie laundry, kitchen, location)
- How up to date everything is... (not put very well!)
- And any other info you can give =)

PS I know all the stuff about what you get, like room size, en-suite, people per kitchen blah blah blah

You'll receive an email when they are. Don't worry about trying to get in early - everyone who applies before the deadline has an equal chance of getting the place they want regardless of the date of application.

My sentiments exactly! :cool:

The windows are like THE smack-down, and they just double-glazed them apparently. Don't worry too much about sharing though, I'm sure you're allowed to state your preferences on the form. They also ask for a brief write-up of personality, so if you like your privacy, stating so on the form should help your cause.

I'm firming English Literature =D. Maths, eh. The horrors of STEP then! :eek:

To be honest, the biggest factor in sociability will be the people you're with.

I prefer AV, but then I live there, so I'm a little biased. I don't think there's that much in it to be honest.

We have our own laundrette, unlike JM. That's pretty handy. We also get a bigger desk and more shelves (handy if you're doing humanities and have lots of books) Location wise, I wouldn't say there's much in it. They're basically next to each other anyway. JM is marginally closer to the SU, AV is marginally closer to Tesco.

Also, AV kitchens have a common room, which is a really nice place to socialise with the people in your kitchen. It also means that everyone can be around at once without it getting too crowded.

Everything is pretty up to date, but it really depends on which kitchen you're in. They all seem to have totally different ovens etc. It's not as fancy as Bluebell (we have keys not fancy key cards), but it's all very nice and doesn't feel rusty round the edges or anything.

Oh thanks very much! I was edging on the side of AV anyway... (mainly because of the laundrette xD) and it sounds better for me on paper. And also the part about the common room keeping the kitchen less crowded wins it for me as well.

2) I've heard AV is a bit unsociable and I love going out so will it be ok for me to put it down?

3) Is the shared bathrooms at Rootes a problem?

I also have JM as 1st choice and seeing as Tocil isn't available, possibly Claycroft. I really want a hall with sociable people so are these ok and what other halls do people recommend with respect to this??

If I remember rightly, yes there is somewhere you can state this (although if there is unexpectedly high demand then there is still the risk of being made to temporarily share rooms e.g. in Westwood but I don't have stats on how likely this is).

You can specify in your personal description that you like to go out a lot and they'll put you with similar people.

I lived in Westwood which also had shared bathrooms. It was never a problem - they were cleaned almost every day for you. There were enough toilets/showers that no-one ever had to queue. In the very unlikely event that both showers were in use, you could just use the ones downstairs. In Rootes, you'll have the whole building at your disposal so if there's the slightest problem with any of the facilities you can easily find another one.

I also have JM as 1st choice and seeing as Tocil isn't available, possibly Claycroft. I really want a hall with sociable people so are these ok and what other halls do people recommend with respect to this??

I don't think Claycroft is available either, see http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/accommodation/studentaccommodation/all/campus/residences/ Also, in the past they have put restrictions on having both AV/JM in your top choices so if you're considering both then you would need to bear this in mind. You'll be told exactly what the policy is when applications open.

There's not really much more I can suggest with regards to choosing halls, apart from obviously Westwood which I lived in and really enjoyed. They mainly use your personal description to determine whether to put you in a loud/quiet area.

It's not that much of a problem. There are places to leave some of your stuff. In AV we have a decently sized cupboard where you can leave things like your kitchen equipment, posters and books that you won't need over the holiday. There are also storage rooms, but these aren't so secure because everyone on your floor has access to them, so probably best not to leave anything too valuable, or else leave it in a massive, locked trunk that won't be taken.

To be honest, much of the stuff I take back, I realise I'd take back regardless. Things like my computer (including the TV I use as a monitor), books I need to work over the holiday, clothes and my games consoles would be coming with me whether I had the longer let or not. The main thing that annoys me about the short let is having to take down all my posters and so on, but it's not really a big deal, so I shouldn't complain! :P

P.S. You're going to LOVE the English Lit and Creative Writing course, it's incredible. Just saying. -biased- :3

It would be referring to the whole flat, but I think there is another section on the form where you can give your preference about this.

For the bathrooms in mixed areas, most are mixed-sex with cubicles but if it's one being shared between, say, 2 people then that would be single-sex.

Depending on the accommodation, you would be able to keep stuff in a cupboard at the top of your wardrobe and/or in a shared trunk room.
