The walk from Westwood to main campus (English is based in the Humanities building but will have lectures all over main campus) is about 10 mins ish...maybe up to 15 mins if you really dawdle.

There have been attacks, yes. However it is very important to note that the total number of attacks is incredibly low given the number of people going back and forth on that journey every single day. In the daytime it is absolutely fine. At night maybe try not to walk it alone and you'll be alright then too. It's just a case of using common sense. The risk of being attacked ANYWHERE is greater at some silly o'clock at night/early morning.
Hi, I'm applying for accommodation and have been looking over it for a few days now and still can't decide.
So far i have got Rootes, Cryfield, Whitefields, Westwood and Benefactors.
I'm really limited by price- really, I just want to stay in Rootes and don't find any of the other residences that appealing. I'm worried about Westwood because of the distance- is that really a big issue for those staying in Westwood? Would I be isolated?
Also, I've seen people say that Whitefields can be anti social- that you're less likely to meet people from other residences if staying there. Is that true? :s-smilie:
I am really sociable and don't want to be isolated from the other residences. I'm also bare lazy and don't wanna be really far away.
(I'm taking French/History)
Any advice would be great!

I lived in Westwood in first year and it really isn't that far to walk or any kind of inconvenience. If you get a bike as well you can really cut the journey time down  It definitely shouldn't put you off! You won't be isolated; everyone tends to make friends with people in their halls anyway and the distance isn't great enough to interfere with you making friends in other halls! The plus side of being further away is that you get your own facilities that no one else will use, such as laundry rooms and music practice rooms.

It's true, as has been said, that there have been attacks along the way but, as has also been said, they happen very, very infrequently. I think part of the problem was that there is a long, quite dark section of the route that served as a shortcut to save you going around University House but this is now closed on an evening. The path is well lit and there are often people around during the journey as they come and go from the Learning Grid, which is on the way to Westwood. I think there is also an SOS phone/button installed along the way near the athletics track should anything happen.

If you're really concerned about it, you can pick up attack alarms for a small charge at the SU reception during the day or borrow one for free from Warwick Nightline in the evening.

If you want to avoid traveling in the dark completely, there is a shuttle bus that will take you right to your door on a night.

I don't know whether or not Whitefields is more or less sociable, but it is certainly right in the middle of campus and is adjacent to the union. I guess it would depend on the group of people you'd be with and even if they're not as sociable you're close enough to everything to meet up with others easily. I think it's a pretty widely acknowledged fact on campus that Rootes tends to be the most sociable hall (mainly due to the sheer size of it and the layout), so I guess if that's what you're looking for it's probably a good bet, as you've said.

Hope this helps

Whatever you do, today is the deadline for applications, make sure you apply now, otherwise you will no longer have priority.
Hi,
I wonder if anyone has tried using a wireless router in halls, using the university's network (out of the ethernet port)? I understand that doing so would cause you to be banned and so, but I have a friend who used P2P in halls and haven't been caught or warned?

Just share your connection from your laptop. In addition, consider things like twofo for your "downloading linux only" purposes.

The reason they don't allow routers like this is because if it's set up incorrectly, you risk disrupting the internet connections for a large portion of your halls of residence (I've worked for IT services before and seen this kind of thing happen) . And P2P isn't allowed because it might slow down the network as well as often being used illegally.
Does anybody know when I should expect the results for Postgraduate Accomodation?

I was told that it could be in September but that would be really late because some Postgraduate programmes start at the end of September and there is also an orientation programme.

And I don't know how likely it would be to get a good alternative accomodation just 1 or 2 weeks before the programme starts.

So, it would be really nice if somebody can comment on that. I have seen in another thread that some students already know their results.

I would like to know this too. Haven't received any emails assigning me an accommodation which is slightly disconcerting considering quite a few post-grads have already been given confirmation.

I am an Erasmus student and would like to book my flight to Birmingham within the next weeks and need to know when I should be in Warwick. I am going to there for 2nd and 3rd term.
The spring term begins at 7th of January and one of my accomodation choices includes 30 weeks-option. When can I move in when
I get that option and when exaclty do I have to move out for Easter vacation? And am I free to come on any date at Christmas
vacation when I get one of the 39 weeks options?

Accommodation should be released around the end of the first week/start of the second week of September. If you don't get on campus they will probably offer you an off campus house that is run by Warwick accommodation - so they will provide it for you. If they don't they will try to help you out. As for Orientation itself, even if you do not have a place on campus during term time, you will be provided accommodation for the Tuesday night to Friday morning.

You will need to be there before the 7th - however this should be something that you should ask the accommodation office: [email protected]

Thank you for your answer. I already asked them but their answer simply was that I can arrive from the date that my contract starts, a somewhat redundant information considering the fact that I will get that contract one month before potentially moving in.

Sounds like whoever answered your e-mail doesn't know either! I suppose all you can really do is tell them you haven't had your contract yet and that you want to know what the likely start date will be on it, and if that hasn't been decided yet then ask when that date will be chosen.
I have been accepted for Heronbank accommodation, hurrraaaaay!!!:smile::smile::smile::smile:
I don't know if this has been asked, I did have a quick look, but does anyone know the moving in date for this year?

Hold on, how come some of you seem to know your accommodation?

(stupid question most likely...)
