I sincerely hope I imagined it...but I could swear I read somewhere that rooms are allocated on a first come/first serve basis when you go for key collection, and not decided beforehand like I originally thought.

Please tell me this isn't true!?!?!?

You might be thinking of the vacation accommodation where rooms are allocated when you get your key. For normal term time accommodation the rooms are allocated manually beforehand based on interests etc.

I was just looking on my accommodation's facebook page and someone said that rooms are allocated on a first come, first serve basis which doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I was told on the open day that they organise corridors/flats so that there's a gender balance, a good balance of home/international students and a range of courses! Just wondering if anyone knows whether that's true because it seems a little strange!

If you apply before the 31st July deadline then applications are treated all equally, according to the principles of allocation specified on the website. Everyone's choices get fed into their allocation computer program and this allocates who gets which halls. And this is the stage we are at now.

Finally, the hall wardens then allocate who goes in which room, and ultimately it's up to them who goes where, using your 'about me' bit and other preferences. So if you specified a quiet area, you might be put in the top floors of Rootes, for example.

The rooms are allocated before arrivals weekend. In recent years, your exact room has actually been indicated in the Student Records 'term address' section a week or so before you move up.

Sounds like a silly question, but how comfy are the beds?

This was posted from The Student Room's iPhone/iPad App

Umm...fine I think...I mean comfy enough it made me skip some lectures
What's the T-Mobile coverage like on campus?

Hi,
Someone might've already asked about this but I've been offered a room in the older Rootes block and was wondering if it's true that the facilities are a lot worse than at new Rootes? Apparently the rooms are also a bit shabbier e.g. they're painted yellow and have thick red carpets. And is old Rootes generally as sociable/ fun as new Rootes sounds?

Quick question: Are the accommodation fees due on the same day as the maintenance loan (ie the first day of each term) or at a later date??

If you're paying by a single direct debit each term, the money will be collected from your account on 25th October 2012, 24th January and 25th April. You need to have the amount in your bank at least 1 day before those dates.

Oh, okay thanks, thats what I needed to know
Sorry if this is a dumb question or if its been asked before but do you have to buy tickets for all freshers events in advance? Can you not just show up and pay on the night?

If you go on their website it tells when you need to pay. Just click on a event and see when you have to pay.

Thanks! Since most of the events just say the ticket price and no mention of whether or not you can get them at the door, does it mean its just a given that you can buy them at the door?

And also, for you or any one else to answer, what are the unmissable events you have to buy tickets for (apart from the paint party)?
Probably the most random question but are washing up liquid, hand wash and bin bags provided.
Also what does everyone use to carry laundry, is a washing basket a bit OTT.

Handiest thing for laundry is actually a wheelie case, saves having to carry anything  You can use it for going to Tesco as well, beats losing your fingers to carrier bag handles.

Washing up liquid no isn't provided (people often share this) but hand wash and bin bags are provided. I've used washing baskets to carry laundry before, as well as IKEA bags for longer distances.

Why would the old Rootes be less sociable? Well it will be just as socialble because I'm there :colone:
do we have a mirror in our room, those in westwood? wondering if i need to take mine or not...westwood also provides a duvet but would you recommend bringing my own?

also, how is kitchen space shared out and what not?
Are laptops covered by the insurance? I know phones aren't.

What do we do with the pillows and duvets that they give us if we're bringing our own? Do we let them know before hand or...???

Thanks in advance

There's a mirror by the sink but it's not full length. I'd recommend bringing your own duvet cover at least to personalise your room. I found that the duvet provided was fine although if you're picky about duvets then you could always bring your own.

Not sure about the insurance, but if you're not using their bedding then you can just stick it in the back of a cupboard somewhere.
