Is there any catered accommodation? Can't find any.

No, everything is self catered. Tesco is a 10-20 minute walk away depending on which accommodation you get and the kitchens are well equipped enough that you should be able to cook everything you need. There's cafes on campus as well but obviously that's a more expensive way of living.

Wow, that's a bit of a put off.

if you aren't prepared to make meals yourself (basic culinary stuff, you can even just microwave if youre uber lazy) then potentially you should consider slaying noobs elsewhere

It's really not that bad! There will be plenty of other students who don't have much experience cooking (as well as people who do) and it's easy enough to get something with cooking instructions on the back. With tesco open 24 hours except on sundays, you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want - it's great!

I'm ok with cooking, it's just the fact that it would probably become quite annoying - e.g. some days you'll feel like you can't be bothered. At other universities you can pay the same price for them to cook for you 3 times a day. Also that way you know when you're eating and it keeps your day structured.

I am prepared - it's just the inconvenience. I'm obviously not just taking in to account meals when deciding where to go.

Yes, you need all of those. My recommendation is that you take the minimum required - something like a frying pan would take up a lot of space if you hardly ever use it. If there are items you need later on, you can always buy them from Tesco/Wilkinson nearby.

Be careful if you're buying these sorts of things with parents. They may be inclined to get one of everything which really isn't necessary. Also don't worry about getting multiple items for guests - you can always borrow things off each other where necessary.

Brilliant thanks! Do they let you have a kettle in your room so you can make your own coffee etc?

Those would probably set off the fire alarms, so no. However they do provide a kettle in the kitchens to use.

Kettles aren't allowed, but they don't set off fire alarms. One of my friends used one in his room for a while. They won't be happy if they find out you're using one, though.

In terms of what to bring for the kitchen...

A large saucepan
A small saucepan
A frying pan/wok
A baking tray
A spatula
A wooden spoon
Cutlery
Two plates
Two bowls
Two mugs
Two glasses
A glass measuring jug
Tea towels
Oven gloves
A sieve
A large, sharp knife
A chopping board

You might want to buy these things when you get here. Most people bring it with them so it's less to worry about, but as the previous poster mentioned, the tesco and wilkos nearby are good enough for most of that stuff.
One guy in my kitchen brought a toastie maker that everyone uses.
They provide a few kettles, a microwave and a toaster.

If you can scavenge any dry food from your parents, it might be an idea. A lot of people I live with brought loads of tins/noodles/alcohol with them.

Fair enough with regards to the kettle, I never really tried using one.

With regards to that list of items, I could probably manage most of the time without the small saucepan, frying pan, spatula, wooden spoon, mugs, measuring jug and sieve. But then I don't do much cooking. It's really worth asking yourself before you go out and buy, say, a frying pan: 'am I likely to do any frying?' If not, don't get it (or get a smaller one) because cupboard space in the kitchen can really be at a premium.

Thanks for your advice guys ! The list is really useful, I'm going to try & buy the stuff before I get there, as you say it's one less thing to worry about.
Hi everyone! I've been reading this forum for some time now and it's been really helpful  Thanks for all the information everyone  I'd like to know which hall is closest to the Social Science Department? Is it Cryfields? Because thats what it looks like according to the map but i'm not so sure.

Also which accommodation is close to both the Social Science building and Tesco?

Cryfield is close to Social Sciences but not to Tesco. It's worth looking at the campus map to compare the different halls: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/campusmap/campusmap2012large.jpg Social Sciences is building 59 in D4, and Tesco is in Cannon Park in H3/H4.

The halls to the south of campus are generally closest to both, however notice that many of the different halls are quite close together so there would only be a small difference in distances when comparing them.

I looked at the map thanks! Cryfields seems kind of far from Tesco, like its on the opposite side of the campus. :| Anyway I think I'll go for the ones on the south of campus only then, probably Rootes or Whitefields.

Why do you want to be close to social science? Just because that's technically your department, don't assume that's where you'll have the bulk of your lectures. The law school is with social science and I only have one seminar a week in there - otherwise, my lectures are mostly in the science concourse and maths department.

Westwood is closest to Tesco by far (less than five minute walk). ARoots of Cryfields is probably closest to soc sci.

Sorry if this is a bit random but do you have to supply your own coat hangers & is there much storage space in the rooms generally ? Also do you need to take any formal clothes for anything. One of my friends wants to know does he need to take a suit ? Thanks in advance !!

Really? Well I didn't know that. I'm going to be in the Econ Department so I think most of my lectures would be in the Social Science Department unless I take electives from some other department, correct me if I'm wrong?

Generally, I'm okay with most of the accommodation that aren't too far away from my department plus all the campus facilities..
