I was looking at the list of facilities and for Rootes the website said the bath doesn't have a shower over it? How does that work, am I supposed to like take a bath all the time?

Also, do y'all bake?

Looking at the summary table, Rootes would have showers as well but in separate rooms.

It varies as to people's cooking abilities. In my experience, people would so big baking sessions from time to time.

As mentioned, the showers are separate cubicle thingies.

Also, do y'all bake?

When I have time, yeah. Last year it was great - there were three people in my kitchen that procrastinated by baking, so we had an almost inexhaustible supply of cake.

Ooh, sorry about that

That sounds great, cos I find baking much easier than legit cooking over the stove D:

You may want to have a look at this map of cycle parks: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/environment/transport/cycling/ Bear in mind that it doesn't include Sherbourne or Bluebell which may have their own facilities.

I've been past the lakes a few times and they are nice, quite quiet and peaceful. There have been reports of people being attacked by birds from the lake between Lakeside and Heronbank but I'm not sure if that still happens.

Roughly (there might be exceptions) the difference between a flat and a corridor is that a flat has an extra locked door before you can get to the bedrooms/bathrooms/kitchen. The upside of this is better protection against theft. The downside is it's harder to socialise with people in other parts of the building without someone letting you through the door.

Thanks for that map, I'll definitely be using that  It's good to know that there's so many storage spaces and all for bikes as it's a lot faster to get around that way! Do you know why Sherbourne and Bluebell aren't included? Is it because they are relatively new?

Oh wow, that must be some aggressive birds then! But I'm sure that only happens if you annoy them...All lakes are located more on the outskirts of the campus, right? Do the lakes belong to different residences or could you go there as well if you live somewhere else?

So are you saying that in a flat, every person's room itself can be locked whereas in a corridor there's only one for the front door? In a way I kind of like that you would have the possibilty of locking your room, as I'm scared that people would take/use my things if I'm not there or I don't get along with someone....Do you know if you get paired to live with people that share similar interests or is it pretty random who you end up with?

Really? I find proper cooking so much easier than baking  I guess it's good then that some people prefer one thing to the other, so then the kitchen will always be full of delicious things

Nice. The geese can get a bit annoying from time to time, but it's a decent area. I'd suggest just coming to the uni at some point and walking around, and going for wherever looks nice. Personally, either one of the ones out by the lakeside area (sherbourne and heronbank being the first year ones, I think), or one of the ones on the south-east (Jack Martin/Arthur Vick) would be my preference.

Also, what's the difference between flats and corridors? Isn't every place made up of bigger apartments where 8-16 or however many people share a kitchen?

Flat: There's a locked door, and behind it are your rooms (also locked), and your kitchen/toilet/shower/etc.
Corridors: the lock is on the kitchen door, the corridor outside isn't locked, and you can just walk around everywhere.

That limits you to Bluebell, Heronbank, or Sherbourne. Of the three, I'd probably prefer Heronbank, but I'd suggest trying to get a look inside each and seeing which you prefer.

I've heard someone else talk about there being attacks by birds at the lakes...But I think that this would only happen if you annoy them (at least I hope so).
I visited Warwick two summers ago, but can't recall every detail anymore. I would love to visit again before making my decision, but I live in Tokyo at the moment and am heading back to my homecountry of Austria at the end of June for summer, so I really can't visit again before the start of term :/
Thanks for telling me the difference between flats and corridors. Is there the possibilty of being in a flat/corridor in each residence? Or do some residences only consist of flats, for example? What I'm worried about with corridors is maybe the lack of security. I'd be scared about my things if I can't lock my room....maybe because I'm not sure who I'll end up living with and what the people are like. Do you know how people are paired up to live together - is it random or do you end up living with people that are similar to you?

It would almost certainly be because they're new. I expect it's very likely that they would have their own cycle facilities but I don't know for certain.

People have occasionally been attacked just by walking past. The lakes don't belong to any particular residence and anyone can go see them. Most are on the outskirts of campus although there is a man-made lake outside the maths building.

Every individual bedroom would always have its own lock, and it's strongly encouraged to keep your room locked when you're not inside (but this doesn't happen 100% of the time hence the stealing, and also people could steal food from the kitchens). There is also always a locked door at the entrance of the building. Flats would additionally have a locked door to get in to the corridor with rooms coming off. Sometimes the kitchen could have a lockable door which enhances security if the residents choose to use it.

When you apply for accommodation, you would give information about your interests and personality, and this would be used to manually allocate you to a room.

I guess, yeah. I can't remember if either of them have bike storage off the top of my head.

Yeah, I never had a problem with it.

All lakes are located more on the outskirts of the campus, right?

Vaguely. There's one by Lakeside/Heronbank (no prizes for guessing that one), and some smaller ones running along between Bluebell/Jack Martin/Arthur Vick/Tocil and Tocil woods, along the south edge.

Do the lakes belong to different residences or could you go there as well if you live somewhere else?

No, they're just lakes, whoever wants to go there can.

So are you saying that in a flat, every person's room itself can be locked whereas in a corridor there's only one for the front door? In a way I kind of like that you would have the possibilty of locking your room, as I'm scared that people would take/use my things if I'm not there or I don't get along with someone....

All of the rooms have individual locks on. The difference is whether people can walk in to the corridors if not (which includes the kitchen, because basically nobody actually bothers to lock the kitchen all the time).

Do you know if you get paired to live with people that share similar interests or is it pretty random who you end up with?

Generally, yeah. The biggest factor in who you end up with is what you put in the description box, but there's still a lot of variance.

You can lock every room on campus. And yes, some blocks are all flats, others are all corridors - it says on the description pages.

NOW! finally haha!

I'm looking for lively colleges, heard Rootes is the best and planning to put this as my first choice.. didn't realise you had to make at least 5 choices! Could anyone give me any advice as to which other colleges have good lively atmospheres? Thanks

Im not a student at Warwick so I don't know how much of this will end up being true but here I go! Im looking for lively halls too and applied yesterday.

Rootes is my obvious first choice as everybody says its the most social one! I really want Rootes as its the perfect value/money/social/location balance so the next 4 ones where done a bit by elimination...
Jack Martin is my second, they say that its not as social as Rootes but a bit more than Arthur Vick or others, and you get an ensuite which is nice! nevertheless they say if AV or JM are not first choices its almost impossible you are allocated here as they are oversubscribed.
My third choice would be Whitefields. Its the nearest to the SU! (even more than rootes). In my application I made a huge emphasis on me being lively and liking to go out to clubs etc so hopefully people in my house are the same. Although its not corridor/flat style its cheap accommodation and if I like the people in my house, Im predicting awesome house parties and a great family atmosphere!
My 4th and 5th choices are there to fill up the spaces. They are cryfield and bluebell, respectively. Cryfield is cheap and close to the SU, bluebell is expensive but has really nice facilities, big bed and also close to the SU (both like 5min or so). The halls left where basically too far from the SU and the humanities building (Im studying History).

Hope this helped!!

Thankyou! After looking into it more I found out similar things to you.. Also my first choice is far and away Rootes for the same reasons, and then I settled for Jack Martin 2nd, Claycroft 3rd, Whitefields 4th and Cryfield 5th.. yeah I got rid of the others for being too far away from the SU and Maths haha.
I am thinking between Lakeside, Sherbourne and heronbank because I want ensuite, reasonable price and 39 weeks let. I don't mind walking to the campus every day, as long as it's got a nice environment around. I am not a party all night person, and (I think) I won't go out very often, but still would like some friends sharing similar interests to hang out with. HATE noisy loud music at night so I prefer somewhere more peaceful, where you can work and relax with other students too.
Does anyone feel the same or is there anyone can give me some suggestions?
I've just applied. I went with Rootes, Whitefield, Jack Martin, Claycroft, Westwood - looking really for sociable, loud and central accommodation really
I've just applied
Athur Vick, Heronbank, Claycroft, Westwood & Whitefields.
I'm not really a party animal, I'm just confident :P

Those three look like your best options with those preferences, yeah.

Among Heronbank and Lakeside, which one would be a better choice in terms of size of room and kitchen? I have seen some images from the uni website and I prefer the furniture arrangement of Lakeside. Also I would like to put a digital piano in my room

I'm trying to decide between AV/JM and Bluebell. I really like the idea of bluebell because of the 39 week let, but I'm worried by all the posts I've read saying it is very anti-social. How bad is it? should I go for bluebell and just hope for a good flat?
Reply 6439
I heard the same thing about bluebell that's why I opted for JM and Sherbourne
