I'm stuck! I enjoy drinking a lot, not gonna hide that fact ha, yet I want an ensuite bathroom! Has anybody got any suggestions? Or has anybody been/still in the same situation as I'm in?

Which house fits me?
Free time ranked in order: in bed with a friend, go to a lot of gigs, watching football and gaming. Don't drink or smoke. Like to sleep. Hate intrusive noise.

Hello Guys,

I've recently firmed Warwick as an Undergraduate International Student. I was looking over all the accommodation and decided that 39 weeks is the best fit for me just like other international students.
I am a really social person, but, I love to socialise in smaller group and I'm like neither drinking nor clubbing. I would prefer and en-suite as well. At first Bluebell peaked my interest but the price is just too high. So I liked the idea of Heronbank, Lakeside and Sherbourne. But I still have a few questions...

1) Are there any restrictions on the number of en-suite choices you can apply for? If so, what are the restrictions?
2) Are shared bathrooms ever a hassle?
3) Could you please recommend a few shared bathroom accommodation options.
4) Westwood seems nice, so does Tocil... Does anyone have recent reviews of these. I've read the ones at the start of this thread. But with the sheer age of Westwood, a recent review of Westwood and Tocil would be much appreciated.
5) Are there any rooms in which you can practice music? I like to sing a lot and I wouldn't want to disturb my flatmates when I'm practicing/learning a new song.

Same for me. I am also starting my PhD and not from the UK.

You must choose at least 5 halls in your application, maximum of 2 en-suit 39-weeks (Bluebell, Sherbourne, Lakeside, Heronbank), maximum 1 en-suit 34 weeks (Jack Martin, Arthur Vick) the rest (at least 2) gotta be shared bathroom. Westwood is the most further located hall (20 min walk to main campus), on the other hand they apparently have the biggst rooms and from what my friend (who is living there now) told me, there are rarely any international students. Also if you put westwood as one of your choices you are almost guaranteed to get it as it is not as popular as the centrally-located halls.

Honestly, the long walk from Westwood doesn't bother me because the convenience of Tesco offsets that. At least for me. Because of this Westwood is one of my preferred shared options.
However, Westwood isn't really my first choice as I would prefer an ensuite like Lakeside or Heronbank and I would not like Westwood to be "guaranteed" for me especially if it's the 4th or 5th choice on my application.
That being the case, would you please suggest/advise me on the pros and cons of Whitefields?

Uh... Whitefields is being demolished. The website has it as TBC but everyone's telling me that nobody will be living there next year.

Wow, so I guess Whitefields is ruled out. Atleast until there's confirmation whether it's not available.

Could you please suggest others that would fit into my circumstances?

Get lakeside and heron bank, then one of AV or JM, and then you should get 2 halls with shared bathrooms maybe tocil would be good as it is relatively close to tesco but close to the central campus and sports center at same time. Then either risk and take Westwood or go with rootes as they are also centrally located. Cryfield is only for 30-weeks and its on the opposite side of campus then tesco is. Claycroft would be ideal howeve it is unfortunatelly not for first year undergraduates.

Its is definitely NOT being demolished, its here for at least another 2 years. I don't know if it available for first years next year though. The uni are still deciding whether to use it for undergrads or postgrads/finalist. They have just made a bunch of (expensive) repairs

I currently live in Whitefields
Pros:
Close to the SU/Costcutter/Piazza
Close to the launderette
Close to the pub and bar
Close to the learning grid (a mini library of sorts, so useful when you need to print something in a hurry)
Cheap but still a 39 week let (you don't have to move out in the holidays)
Nice living room
Homely feel
Decently sized rooms
Really powerful showers (This may be campus wide, I don't know!)

Cons:
SU can be a bit loud, not enough to bother me really
Kitchen is crowded, its not a great size but we've managed to make it work

I think because it is cheap, people assume its horrible. I really disagree! The rooms are decent sized, the decoration is a bit outdated but so is most of the older housing on campus. People will not peer through your windows or go sit on your roof, except maybe your own drunk flatmates :roll eyes:. I love the homely feel, it feels like we are a little unit of really good friends. Its so easy to go make friends with the houses around you as well. Its so nice to be two minutes away from the bar, pub, the shop because its no effort at all. I love the location and although it isn't the prettiest accommodation you'll find but it definitely feels studenty and I for one will be really sad to leave!

For your shared toilet choices, other accommodations that may be suited to you, rootes is very popular choice. Also, westwood have very big rooms and are fairly cheap if you don't mind the walk (and you don't have any lectures on gibbet hill because that is a very long walk then). Just make sure (specially for rootes) that you are very explicit about what kind of person you are in your little description when you apply for accommodation. They will put you with similar people! The house on my left are loud and like to party all the time whilst the house on my right is very quiet and people keep to themselves. Everyone is happy in their own houses but wouldn't be suited in the house next to them for example. They do a good job of putting you with likeminded people but only if you give an accurate description

Also, don't be too upset about not putting down bluebell. I know so many people who are really unhappy there. Its fine if you like keeping to your self but there are very few blocks in bluebell that are social. Its isolating and although the double bed is nice, I think it is really really not worth the money.

Really? Wow, sorry! I'd heard that they were being demolished for good. There was something about Cryfield being the cheapest student residence nationally which was particularly important 2015/16 because the next cheapest, Whitefields, was being demolished.

Well, if it does turn out to be available for first years it might have to be one of my options then.

What you were saying about the personal description, I'm not entirely sure to succinctly say, I'm not a hermit but I don't particularly enjoy really rowdy nights out?

Don't try to be succinct, the people who do mostly get put with people who they are unhappy living with. Its very generic to say I like going out but I like sleep also, you are just describing pretty much 95% of people. Be specific, are you a morning/night person, do you want to be with people who are going to be going clubbing every night or do you want people who prefer to stay in and chat or do you want people who will always keep to themselves (of course you can say a mixture, like people who like going out occasionally but not every single night).

I literally put something like I quite like going out a few times but not every single night and I really want to be with social people who will want to chat. I'm a night owl and it be nice to be put with other people who do not mind staying up late but are respectful about noise ect.

That is pretty much exactly what I got, obviously a few people are slight mismatches but they will try their hardest to put the most similar bunch together! But if noisy neighbours will seriously annoy you, I can't stress enough how important it is to put that. If people who are just interested in getting drunk every night will annoy you, put that. If people who will always keep to themselves will bother you, put that :-)

If you need any more help, feel free to ask. I know how stressful it was for me trying to pick one but I guarantee you most people are really happy no matter where they get put!

About Whitefields being knocked down, we heard the rumours too but our cleaner confirmed that it won't because she will be working at white fields for the next 2 years according to her boss. If they do knock it down, which I think they might in the future, it will be such as shame as it is like one of 3 accommodations that can be covered wholly by the minimum student loan. I get that loan and their theory is that your parents should be able to help you, but with my parents having to put their second child through university (and 3rd the year after that!), the amount that they could help me is so limited. I don't know what I would have done and its really unfair imho because they will probably use the space to create more expensive housing.

Yeah I'd say whitefields is a great option for many people, but its not for everyone.
Bluebell, although lovely inside, is just not worth the money. In my friends flat, they literally don't talk and when she feels like she's going crazy without social interaction, she stays at Whitefields! She's probably the only ever Bluebeller to like Whiefields though

Hmm yea Bluebell is luxurious but I would rather make close genuine connections in my first year in a new country than to be isolated by workaholics.

Rootes is your best bet
Hi guys!
I was thinking about applying to Heron Bank because it has ensuites and is closest to the economics department.
Any reviews about it?
I've firmed Warwick for chemistry, and really don't know which accommodation to pick. I think an en suite is a must for me, and don't mind walking too far. I was thinking bluebell, but is it really worth the money? And is it as bad as everyone says socially; or is it just luck of the draw whether you get a socialable flat?
I like partying, but don't like going out every night, but I'm not a recluse who doesn't like speaking to people and doesn't go out. I just don't know what to do

Isn't Rootes one of the closest to the Gibbet Hill campus? Atleast it is on the campus map.
So confused!
