Is there any particular favorite among students of the WBS? Or are they all evenly spread out over the buildings? I imagine living with people that have the same interests would make for lots of conversations.

I can see the benefits of living with people who are interested in the same sorts of things but you might get a bit fed up of people if you go to lectures and see them there, then you live in close proximity to them as well. Just an observation!

Wouldn't it be better to live with people on other courses? You could still make friends on your course, but this way, there is a greater sense of boundaries and distance? Unless you're the kind of person who wants to spend most of their time with the same people, then go for it. I'd just thought I'd point out that it might not be an advantage.

I live in Westwood at the moment so if anyone would like some pictures or has any questions feel free to ask!

How far is the walk to gibbet hill? Would it be worth living closer if you'd have to walk there often? And what do you think the biggest pros and cons of Westwood are? Thanks in advance

Would you say its fairly sociable?

Right now, it's a finalist block, so this is in no way comparable.

A student on open day told me one of them (might of been cryfield) is very quiet or something.

Definitely wasn't Cryfield. They were probably talking about Tocil, having not realised that it's full of finalists.

How do you find it sharing with 11 other people?

Fine. Hasn't really been a big deal.

Would you say there are enough ovens and that for everyone?

We haven't had a problem with that.

Do you happen to know much about cryfield and the differences in terms of the social side in comparison to tocil?

Right, let's be clear here: there is absolutely no such thing as a "quiet" or "social" block. At all. They simply do not exist (assuming that we're talking about first year blocks here). In every block, there are quiet areas and louder areas. What you put in the personal statement bit of the accommodation application is far more important in this respect. Likewise, nothing is really a significant distance from anywhere (excepting Westwood or one of the Lakeside-area blocks to Gibbet hill, that's a bit of a walk, but still not massive by the standards of most universities). Pick an accommodation that you like the price/facilities of.

Hi, the main question with Westwood is the distance it is from everything else. How far actually is it (heard some people say 10 minutes, others like 20 to the rest of campus) and has it been a pain at all over the year?

I don't live there, but I do need to walk up there several times each week (NB: Don't be a society treasurer whilst living on campus. There's a lot of walking to the post room involved). I've got maths department -> education building down to six minutes, if you take the shortcut through the business park. Ten minutes is a reasonable guess for going between the actual accommodation blocks of Westwood and central campus.

Also, does the distance affect Westwood in terms of the social side? I'm a bit worried it'd leave me a bit isolated from the rest of the campus feel, and just wondered how social Westwood is generally.

It doesn't seem to particularly. I have noticed a tendency for the people in the Westwood blocks to end up knowing/spending time with their flat mates more than people elsewhere. It doesn't seem to affect anything else, though: there's always people living in westwood basically everywhere.

Finally, what are the Westwood kitchens like, the rooms are HUGE which looks like a big advantage, but the Warwick website's Westwood pictures are a bit awful, so I haven't really been able to see a kitchen at all properly (a picture would be brilliant!)

Sorry there's a lot there but any help would be great thank you!

From what I remember from the few times I've been there, the kitchens are fairly small and awkwardly shaped. There didn't seem to be a massive amount of cupboard space, relative to the number of people.

Westwood -> Gibbet Hill is basically the only walk of any significant distance on campus. If you don't like walking long-ish distances (or feel like you might end up rolling out of bed five minutes before you lectures), you might want to live closer.

So would you say cryfield is good accommodation? Im located on gibbet hill and the chemistry area so would you say i shouldnt rule out westwood and that because its not a massive walk?

I would say it depends on how fast you walk. I've got small legs and l can reach main campus easily in 10-15 minutes. People on my floor say they can reach it in just under 10. I have never found it a pain; keep in mind I do Biomed so I have to walk to Gibbet Hill! Its quite scenic so I don't mind it; although when it's raining you do wonder why you have to walk so far ha ha! :P

I definitely would disagree with it affecting your social life. The majority of Westwood halls have 25 to a floor and so it feels like a big family; pre drinks and general socialising is always a great amount of fun with this amount of people! I admit in the Winter when you walked to the SU for a night out it was pretty brutal, especially if you didn't take a coat; but definitely not a major problem. If you are bothered about walking back if you time it right there is usually a free shuttle bus which goes around campus you can jump on; at late times the drivers are usually more than happy to drop you at specific places than the intended route. Never once have I felt isolated socially from living in Westwood.

I would say the kitchens are pretty darn good! I know the block I curently live in used to have 25 to a kitchen, but I think it was last year that they added another one; so there is around 11-13 to a kitchen. There is 2 fridges and 2 freezers so everyone gets a shelf each which is brilliant; I've heard other halls get just half a shelf so we're quite lucky. There is also plenty of cupboard space; everyone is my kitchen has a whole top and half a bottom cupboard which both have two shelves.

I've posted some pictures at the bottom of this post!

I study Biomed; it takes me around 25 minutes to reach Gibbet Hill. I would say it depends on if 50 minutes a day of walking to lectures would bother you. I used to walk 30 minutes and take a 40 minute bus drive to reach college so a 25 minute walk was definitely a step up for me!

A lot of people would go back to their accommodation if they had say a 2 hour break of lectures; however with living in Westwood that was pretty impracticle. Gibbet Hill has a learning zone/ mini library and IT suite though so I managed to use the time to get work done. Also some of my friends lived close to Gibbet Hill (Bluebell) and so I would often hang out at their's in the gap so it definitely doesn't hit your social life.

I would say the pros of Westwood are the great room size, with a massive desk (definitely going to miss these next year!). I also love the community feeling you get with 25 people to a floor; you definitely get a family vibe and great social atmosphere. The surrounding area of Westwood is quite quiet and scenic too so you feel like you're on campus but at the same time away from the hustle and bustle. Oh yes and Westwood has the post room! All mail that cannot fit in a postbox is sent to Westwood; where it takes my a 2 minute walk while every other hall must walk to Westwood. :colone:

In my opinion I wouldn't say there are any major cons. Sometimes when its pouring down you do really wish you lived closer to campus; and something such as getting a library book or walking to the SU is a simple task for those who say live in Rootes. Sometimes I do wish I had an ensuite! But I've never has to wait to use the bathroom. In my opinion there is nothing that made me regret living in Westwood; for the money I'm paying I am very impressed with what I've been given and I've enjoyed every minute.

Hey! On my floor there are 3 toilets and 4 showers; one of which also has a toilet. There is 25 people on my floor; I've only ever had to wait for the shower once and that was after a paint party ha ha!

Here are some pictures

Never been inside it, sorry. Don't know much about it apart from that it's cheap, and supposedly built to the design of a Swedish women's prison.

I wouldn't, no, but then I routinely walk considerably further than that. It depends if you mind walking the distance or not.

no i don't think so, as long as you apply by the deadline you will have as equal chance as everyone else to get your first choices so don't rush it, take your time to look at the options.

Their website is good, its got lots of info on them and once you have decided it doesn't take long to fill out the application.

20 minutes or so, maybe. I walk fast, though.

I'm living in Tocil at the moment. It's pretty decent, and reasonably quiet at the moment (when they aren't building something next door...). You can usually hear the drunken shouting from AV/JM, but not much else. That might change significantly next year though, given that it's currently a third year block. We've got 12 in our flat, with three toilets, two showers and one bath, though I think some of the other flats have less people/more showers. We've got two sinks and two ovens (along with the ridiculous array of other appliances that we've all turned up with).

Hey when do exams usually finish by at Warwick?
Original post by RumeeAhmed
The problem with Sherbourne is that the doors to the other corridors are locked and your keys won't work with the doors other than your own. That doesn't sound bad at first but if you're very unlucky enough to get an antisocial flat you're screwed.

Ahh I see, hopefully if I put down that I am a social person that won't be the case, thank you for your response!

1st years, latest end of 2nd week of june, 2nd years latest end of week 8 i think which is 18-19th, 3rd years latest 1st week of june.
So im planning on putting Rootes down as my first option because I want to me in a more sociable hall and i also like going out a lot. I was looking for advice on what to put down as my second and third option, i was looking at whitefields or JM, what are they like compared to roots?
