The Warwick Accommodation Thread (+Guide in Post#1)

Any postgrads about know what the crack is with accommodation? Specifically when we will know which accommodation we have? There are about 3 on-campus accommodations I'd be prepared to accept and I don't want to do any last minute house-hunting in Leam so I'm a bit anxious to find out where they've put me.

Also have any of you PhD kids (especially those being funded by the EPSRC) been told when and how much money you're getting? The lack of correspondence is unnerving.

Thank you for the clarification!

Just to let you know, I called up Warwick Accommodation this morning and they allowed me to be no longer placed in a quiet area so that is still an option!

Thanks so much for letting me know  I don't think I mind too much, as long there are still people willing to go out with me! Did they specify on the phone what 'quiet area' meant?
anyone else thinking about taking a mini fridge for your room haha? just because 19 people per kitchen probably means food will get stolen

I was thinking the same thing. Until I found out that we're not allowed a mini fridge due to the power required :frown:

Yeah they are banned, unless you have a medical exemption. I guess you could risk having one, but I don't know how often they checked my room (as far as I'm aware they only did once or twice and gave us written warning).

I never had any food stolen, but I was in a smaller kitchen of 8 where everyone got on.

Food doesn't really get stolen. Some people kept non-perishable stuff in their rooms which wasn't a bad idea. But you generally just develop a mild level of respect tbh :P

The Estates service do maintenance throughout the year and sometimes ask to come into your room. Sometimes its arranged maintenance or if it's more important they'll knock and if you're not in they do sometimes let themselves in. So that's generally how people get caught.
Food gets stolen when sharing with many people like in Westwood. You just have to live with it sometimes

And Westwood in my experience! At least, from my Chinese friends that is the case.

Though it depends who you live with. I was in Westwood, food didn't get stolen.

Most international students will be in 39 week lets.

Maybe you didn't notice, especially with things like milk. It happens now and then, when you share with strangers food goes astray. Just how it is

Is there anything we are not allowed to keep in our rooms? Do you know if we are allowed electric fans?

Hi guys,

I have an offer for postgrad at warwick and most of my future classmates who got accommodation offers are off campus, even though they had first few preferences for on campus accommodation.

Why do you suppose this is?
Whats the point of asking your preference if they are going to give you your 4th 5th preference at this stage? Its still august.
Doesn't the university prioritize international students for on campus considering they are going to a completely new place?

You can have as many fans as your heart desires! I don't have a full list of forbidden items, but as well as the mini fridge you're not allowed stuff like candles, weapons, portable cooking devices, stuff like that

Do you know postrgrads who already have accommodation offers? I know people who have offers with Warwick accommodation but applied only for specific off-campus lets. I applied through the general form with listed preferences and am still waiting.

My guess is no. If you're a postgraduate you're probably considered enough of an adult to be able to contend with a bus ride. I don't think you're afforded any special dispensation because you're from elsewhere. Most of the British postgraduate students will have previously lived elsewhere too.

As for the allocation, I don't think it's rigorously done. I have a friend who (for undergrad) applied to Bluebell, Arthur Vick and all the other unnecessarily pretentiously expensive ones and got put in Whitefields despite it not being on her listed preferences. Likewise I have a friend who was put in Bluebell, despite not listing it because he couldn't afford it. Don't lose too much sleep over it. I think they try to put people where they want to go, and once there are too many competing preferences give up and shove people in anywhere. It doesn't matter though, you'll get somewhere to live.

Well for my undergrad i did my fair share of walking then bus then train and then walk so i dont have a problem doing the same over there. What i wanted was to make the most out of my stay at warwick and spend time on campus carrying out various activities and being among students mostly.

But as you say they put people where they want to, i'll keep hope.

And what did your friend who was allocated to Bluebell do? Was he allowed to change?

Yeah, I'm hoping for campus for the same reasons but primarily we're there to work and not everybody gets to live where they want to. I think the only people who get special treatment are those that need it due to mobility impairment or similar, everybody else gets put into the same lottery.

I'm not really sure how much of a fuss he kicked up. I'm guessing if it was a case of not having the money to pay the rent he could have got some compromise, but I think he just sucked it up, had to borrow money from his parents and ate super noodles for a year.
