Hi,

Looking for accom that is sociable, close to main campus (so nothing like Sherbourne or Westwood) with quite a nice room - nothing like Whitefields.

I've chosen these as my top preference 1. Arthur Vick 2. Bluebell 3. Tocil 4. Heronbank 5. Rootes - is this ranked preference good?
I know Bluebell isn't particularly good for social life, but do the nice rooms and close proximity to campus make up for it? Do people in Bluebell have a good social life at all? Similarly, is Arthur Vick an unsociable hall and what are the chances of getting AV if it's my first choice for halls?

Thanks

Your social life will be exactly what you make of it. And more importantly, what you put in the description for the type of person you are in the accommodation form. There are lots of people in Bluebell who are antisocial and don't go out much and there are people who go out 3-4 times a week as well. I stayed in Bluebell in my first year and it was great, had a really good bunch of people in my flat. we went out multiple times a week and when exam season came around, I had a nice quiet environment to study and didn't have any 3am fire alarms that are oh so common in other 'more social' halls.

There is no such thing as a "sociable" or "unsociable" hall. There is vastly more variance within halls than between them: there are quiet flats in Rootes that barely know each other, and sociable flats in Bluebell that go out together all the time. What you put in the description of yourself is far more important. Pick based on cost/quality (and location, if you care about that), not any reputation you think it has.

Hello everyone,

What are the chances of getting Bluebell if I put it as my first choice? If I don't put Arthur Vicks or Jack Martin as my first choice is there any chance that I'll get it?

I'd really appreciate any info! Thank you!

Hi there!

I'd say that it is quite tough to get it as everybody wants it. One of my friends who lives in Cryfield with me put Bluebell as her first preference and randomly picked other accommodations as her latter preferences as someone told her that you always usually get either one of your first two choices.

However, that proved to not be the case! I'm assuming that since you'd like to have Bluebell you'd like to have an en-suite room. Hence, make sure that your other preferences are all en-suite and don't randomly select other places.

People do usually get their first choice but places like Bluebell are tough as its everyone's favourite choice!

You'll usually get your preferred place if you submit the appication before 31st July.
Hello all! Am putting Warwick as firm for History and German but I'm fretting over accommodation slightly?

Looking at sherbourne, Lakeside/Heronwood and Jack Martin - money and distance isn't too much of a problem, but for me the issue is en-suites (slight toilet phobia :O )
I just want student opinions on these places, like pros and cons?? Like most students I balance work/play but occasionally, I am one of those annoyingly loud people on nights out, yet I also do like early nights in (especially during exams?) I just don't want to be surrounded by less sociable people who may get annoyed on the occasion I am loud, but in these areas, I guess noise isn't too much of a problem (except JM)
current student opinions would be greeeat

There are going to be people who party hard and people who are consistently silent in every accom building. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I live in Lakeside and I have one douchebag neighbour who never stops partying, and I do mean 3 day benders at a time, through the day and night constantly. And on the other side of me I've got a guy who never makes a peep. If it weren't for the fact I've seen him leave his room once, I'd never know anyone lived there.

You're not going to find a place that suits your need to be loud or quiet whenever you feel like it. That's just the bottom line. Like said in the other posts, pick based on the cost and whether you need an ensuite or not. Your personal description when you apply is what is going to get you placed near louder/quiter people. I asked for the quietest possible and I still didn't get what I wanted. Currently, Sherborne makes enough noise that I can hear it almost every night in Lakeside yet Lakeside had the 'reputation' of being quiet when I started and it is anything but.

Hello! Do you mind me asking what your preferences were? Did you put Lakeside as your first choice?

Hey. I didn't put Lakeside as my first choice, I put Bluebell, Lakeside was my second I believe. I don't know anyone who got their first choice, so honestly I don't know why they bothered letting us 'pick'. I even applied on medical grounds, and so did two of my friends, and still we didn't get what we asked for.

I think my third choice might have been Jack Martin.

thank you so much for your reply!! If it isn't too much of a hassle, what would you say are the general pros/cons of living at Lakeside? Really liking the look of it from the photos I've seen!
Hey guys,

I was wondering when we get to move in? I'll probably be going with Tocil, but I'm not sure if I'll be allowed to move in for induction week (starts on the 26th of September). Also, are there any students currently living in Tocil? How are you finding it?

You're welcome, it's no hassle.

Pros:

- I've visited every accom building and Lakeside is the prettiest. Nature everywhere, we're right next to multiple fields and two lakes inhabited by ducks and geese who are always there
- We have the smallest number of people living in each flat - 8, whereas some buildings can have up to 14 I think
- En-suites- Internet never cuts out, always fast and consistent (plus you have an internet cable and wifi so if one did cut out, you'd have the other)
- Room is a decent size, for one person, you certainly don't need any bigger
- I had loads of stuff, more than the average person, to bring and it all fit, even all my books- There are quiet zone posters where the Lakeside buildings overlook each other, so there where the benches are, there is never any noise

Cons:

- Walls are thin (but they are in every accom building, you can hear everything your neighbour is doing and the halls echo extremely loudly. If you sleep in, you can hear everyone leaving and coming in throughout the day)
- Dealing with people who keep saying Lakeside is far away even though it doesn't concern them (it is not far away, it takes 10 mins walk to get to the centre of the university)
- Small kitchen (if need be everyone can fit in there at once from your flat but it's not comfortable, and there's only one sink)
- Geese crap everywhere since that where they live, but you will be walking around geese and ducks everywhere in the university, even in the roads.
- On the opposite side of where all of the Lakeside buildings is the path that leads to the centre of campus and on the other side of the path is Sherborne. If your bedroom is beside this path like mine is, you will hear every conversation going on outside and when people are leaving and returning from parties, you will always know
- This path is always littered with alcohol bottles and broken glass that people from Sherborne leave. This is most likely the people who live there this year and won't necessarily reflect how Sherbone people always behave since I know people who live there currently who detest it

Hahah can confirm this totally from having lived there this year- personally loved it and was a good balance of quiet and 'noisy'...depends on the people in your flat/block tbh.

I was able to access my room in Tocil for induction week. However, I feel the only pro of living in Tocil is the proximity to everything. You're very isolated as you need a key to access your flat, meaning you're kinda limited to 12 people, you can't walk into other flats or in the corridors. The rooms in Tocil are small, smaller then the ones in Rootes. Personally, I felt quite oppressed because the flat was so small, also the people from my flat were very nice but a little to laidback and unsociable for me, I ended up transferring to an other accommodation in week 3 because I wanted to have more space and be with more lively people. Best decision I've ever made.
All accommodation looks nice to me!
Hello guys, need some help:

I was thinking for my top 5 choices as putting down in the following order:
Tocil
Westwood
Heronbank
Lakeside
Rootes

I was wanting a fairly sociable area but not an all-party accomodation as I'll most likely have lectures throughout the week at various times (studying engineering). I heard Westwood is really far and unsociable apart from with it's own hall, and if I wanted to join societies would it be harder to find time to travel, and takes long time to travel to lectures etc. but looking from the website it looks like decent rooms for decent price.

The problem is, if I put Westwood as my second choice does that mean I will automatically get it as Tocil is more in demand whereas Westwood is undersubscribed. If I were to put Westwood as say 3 and Heronbank 2 (taking a risk) would I be more likely to get Tocil. My charater description will most likely be " quite sociable, but want a few quiet nights a week for decent sleep and work", want to party and socialise at weekend and not too far away from SU/Centre of Uni.

Thanks

Does anyone have experiences with Tocil/Westwood they can share?

Hey so I'm a fresher currently in Sherbourne. Westwood is a bit of a distance but to be honest i would say it's really sociable as there's a common room and more of a corridor style living where as tocil is just flats of 12 and the blocks are isolated. Westwood also has the biggest rooms on campus and there's a shuttle bus to central campus every 20 minutes so it isn't all that bad. I'd say if you can afford an ensuite then put it first because like I can't imagine having to share but otherwise you'll be fine.

wondering which to put first out of Rootes, Westwood or Sherbourne.

I want a sociable atmosphere, but I can't decide between them.

Sherbourne= Ensuite Rootes without the hassle of moving out for Easter (AV/JM)
Rootes= Notoriously the party halls with probably the best pre drinks and flat parties but constant fire alarms (Sherbourne we've only had 2 planned)
Westwood= Everyone bonds really well but no one really wanted to go there so just making the best of a bad situation, though saying that they do have the biggest rooms on campus and close to tesco
