Is there anything i can write in my description part to make it more likely that i will get new rootes?
I know that its probably all pot luck but i would really like to get new rootes.. x

Very unlikely to be honest. They are treated as one and the same. Admittedly New Rootes is a bit smarter, but the facilities and the experience will be exactly the same whichever you get so I wouldn't worry that much about it.

On my application i put Rootes 1st, JM 2nd and Cryfield 3rd (had only really thought about the 1st 2) I really wanna be in Rootes tho cos from this thread i don't think it JM sounds like the place for me.
Im one of those lucky people who is rarely bothered by noise and i can sleep through pretty much anything. I said on my form that I generally go to bed late, love to socialise and always up for meeting new people.

Think others have said it but I would add that it is highly likely that you will end up in the best accomodation halls.

I put this exactly same list choice last year and am now smack in New Rootes. Its greeat! (<<Oh god! the frosties kid! :s-smilie: )

Anyway theres 17 people in our kitchen and cupboard space underprovided and is highly contested. Amusingly so, it has to be said.
We also have 5 doing maths or close variants and 3 x philosophy
but I do suspect the subject groupings are random and bear little effect overall.

Was wondering about Rootes...is it difficult sharing a kitchen with so many people?
Or are there like two microwaves and things so that people don't have to wait for ages?
Also does anyone know whether being in JM would make things difficult socially? Like Lili!
I'm looking to be with people who like to go out but not every single night, so definitely not unsociable people.
And another (this is the last!), do they put people of similar courses living near to each other so that people can integrate that way?
Thanks!

Can get amusingly contentious sometimes. But you're going to have to share wherever you're going and its part of the uni experience.
We had 2 microwaves for a while but that was only because upstairs destroyed the first with egg and soap. There are 2 hobs, microwaving is quick, its generallly not a problem.
Dont think anyone's issues with JM go beyond a playful casual dislike.
Rootes or JM. Westwood is far.
I doubt it.

Hiya.
So ... I've narrowed my options down to Westwood, Whitefields and Tocil (because they allow 39-week rents; I only go back to Hong Kong during the summer). I want to be with people who might not want to party every night but are still sociable, so any advice from Warwick students is helpful.

I'm slightly iffy on Westwood's kitchen sharing - 12-16 sounds a bit too much. Will I have to wait for a long time to cook? My friend also complained to me how in shared kitchens, people snitch a bit of your food here and there ...
I think Whitefields is too close to the Union and so it might be quite loud (also, it says on the website: During the 2008/2009 academic year work will take place on the Students' Union building to improve the facilities available to students. As a result students living in Whitefields may experience some inconvenience during this time).
I don't know much about Tocil, so I'm neutral at this point. Any ideas? (:

Personally I would have said Whitefields every time, but you are probably right about the noise. I only know one person who lives in Tocil, it seems to be quite quiet. Have you considered lakeside? I have a few friends there and they are really nice and fun?

Westwood's kitchen sharing is 18-26 actually :p:
It's really not as horrific as it sounds tho. The only horrific part is the freezer, but apart from that its all good. Never really have to wait to cook cos not everyone eats at the same time. Sometimes need to wait for an over shelf but you get used to it
Yeah... our food snitching has kinda gotten outta control over the last term
I'd just like to point out that at the end of the day it won't matter where you live, it is who you get put with that is important. You might get lucky and have the best friends ever in halls or you might be unlucky and not get on with people. Looking back Rootes was ok, not the best place ever but it had its good moments and thats what matters not what colour the walls are or how many ovens you have.
Well I'm very much inclined to apply for Westwood, except it must be pretty horrible to walk 10+ minutes in the cold/snow/rain to get to most places; I hear some people even just take the cab up the road sometimes. Whitefield, I'm reluctant, seeing as its so near the Union I'd probably hear the drunken garble right outside. And Tocil/Lakeside are socially 'dead' (so I hear).

Decisions. ):

Sorry for the constant questions and stuff regarding accomodation - I'm just a tad paranoid!

Whilst a 10 minute walk in the rain can be unpleasant at times, it's not worth turning down a great fresher's year for it. Your entire life you will be caught in the rain. If you're that worried, invest in an umbrella and a warm jacket.

Depends which whitefields house you are in. You are more likely to get noise from the union rebuild than to hear drunken garble next year.

Tocil and Lakeside are pretty dead  Although lakeside has nice rooms! Have you considered Rootes or JM? Rootes isnt really loud everywhere.

EDIT: Just seen you need a 39 week let, ignore the last bit!

Also, if you put down 39 week westwood, you are almost certain to get it
Hm. Westwood it is. I hope they don't give me a shared room though; I like to socialize, but it would feel like I don't have all that much privacy.

Thank you for your advice <3

I've just looked at the first year application form (anyone can do that), Claycroft isn't there. Are you a Postgrad student? If not, I think you're on their application form by mistake (or possibly a finalist's, but I think that's impossible).

Your options should be:
Arthur Vick, Benefactors, Cryfield, Heronback, Jack Martin, Lakeside, Rootes, Tocil, Westwood, Whitefields, Off-campus.

Postgrad options:
Claycroft, Heronbank, Lakeside, Tocil, Coventry, Kenilworth, Leamington.

I would be very surprised if Accommodation made it more likely for people who only put down 3 choices to get one of those three than someone who put down 5 to get one of their top 3. If that was the case then everyone would just put down less.

And if you specify a quiet area, you'll quite likely get a *very* quiet area. It's possible to get a reasonable degree of peace and quiet in any hall, including Rootes - if you want the best possibility of sociable people in your halls, don't ask for a quiet area, you won't be forced into insomnia for it.

I was thinking of putting Tocil as first, but that was totally based on the 39week and the location.. can you expand on how it's dead and I'll see if I can live with it?:P
Ideas on Westwood anyone? I really like the look of it, I really don't mind the walk, I've had many hilarious drunken stumbles home with friends before n they just finish the night off!
Is that the only reason people are put off Westwood?
What kind of people are generally in Westwood? I love goin out, loud music, getting wasted etc. but at the same time, I'm gonna be doing MORSE so gonna need some quiet time, although I firmly believe in earplugs so I don't mind noise really....
What do they have on Westwood campus? I've heard they have a shop n big common rooms, anything else?
If not Westwood, I'm thinking Rootes, but tbh does it matter really that much?? Surely it all depends on how well you get on with your house mates?
Do Westwooders go to the SU as much as any one else, or does the walk actually put them off? if can, i'd like to lol at how lazy students are
FINALLY who has put Westwood down as their first choice, and what are you like?

If you don't mind the walk, Westwood is a good choice. The rooms are huge for the price, and if you're a social person you'll like the big corridors (26 people). My corridor's active (I can hear a game of corridor football as I write this:smile: ) but quiets down at night, so sleep isn't a problem. I've been fine and I'm a physics student with lots of 9 o'clocks. Westwood's also got the shortest walk to Tesco, which you'll really appreciate when you encounter some amazing booze bargain.

The Westwood campus has a cafe as well as a shop, plus its own sports hall and astroturf pitches. The common rooms aren't really much to get excited about, they tend to act as the dining room for the ground floor.

The walk to the union doesn't put people off, if they're that damn lazy they get the Westwood minibus or taxis. It tends to be more of a problem in the mornings - you might find you miss the 1st 5 minutes of a lot of early lectures. On the plus side it wakes you up a bit and gives you extra time to finish breakfast.

but quiets down at night

To what extent? Are parties to be had in the Westwood halls or should I look more towards Rootes for that kind of thing?

Who would've thought that chosing accommodation could be such a dilemma? im trying to send my application off tonight, but am also stuck as what to put in the about yourself bit!
Ditto to everything Yellow Bentines said. Although his westwood block is nowhere near as good as mine

Parties will all depend on the people you live with (and if Joy Pinks is your resident tutor!).
Thank you  well, I'm putting Rootes first then Westwood then Jack Martin, so if I end up in Westwood, it'll just be fate and I'll know I was meant to go there lol

As much as I should disagree with you, our tutor has a baby (in university accomodation WTF?) and so gets really shirty about noise sometimes. Plus we've got a hole in the wall of our corridor, one of our showers is knackered and half the kitchen appliances don't work.
