Students do not generally buy the house outright! Everyone pays rent for the house of about £70/80 per week depending on the location. The rent would be for 40 weeks between September and July.

It would be hard to "buy" a flat of any size for less than £110,000.

Thank you for the informative reply! How much should one expect to pay for an equivalent house in London?

Err, I guess it depends on what area of London, but to buy a house there would cost upwards of £200,000, I think. Can someone check that? ^^

Renting isn't too much more expensive than in Leamington. People I know who are currently students in London pay perhaps ~£90 per week excluding bills, though someone in Islington pays about £130.
Bbbbbbbbbbbbird bird the bird is the word bbbbird bird everyone knows the bird is the word!

Tocil is the best accom I've been in, and if you're applying to do Maths it's definitely the most convienent.

iIke 10 mins from tescos
4 minutes (my current best) walking to the maths building.
it's really close to the SU as well so you never have to walk far for events.
Really nice rooms and the way the flats work is brilliant. You get to know the people in your flat a lot better than a load of people down a corridor (say like in Westwood). 12 to a flat is fine, we have 3 showers (with a toilet in each) and a proper bathroom. there is always plenty of showers etc to go around and I've never had a problem getting one. the kitchen is nice, and self catered is NOT problem by any stretch of the imagination, I thought when I came here it would be a problem, but honest to God it's so much more convenient than having to go to some hall where they have already made you some crap food you wouldn't want to eat unless forced to anyways is just so much better.

Afraid I stopped reading at 'Tocil is the best'...

Certainly looked okay when I sneaked in during arrivals weekend..
Bit of a maze :P

And what about Claycroft? I am applying for Master's Degree and I am choosing between Claycroft and Heronbank, but more towards Claycroft, as it is closer to WBS.
What would you advice me? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

right ok... i know this has been asked about a hundred times but all the answers are quite old so...

i want a 30/39 week let; halls, not a flat; not ensuite... as far as i can tell my options are westwood, rootes and cryfield...

opinions on all of these are welcome... i am quite quiet, like to go out a couple of times a week, but want to do really well on my course as uni is costing me so much...

thoughts and suggestions are very welcome!

Would recommend Westwood - quieter than Rootes but still lots of fun to be had, my block goes out a few times a week. Like yourself I'm quiet and hate hearing noise from outside my room and (broadly speaking) it's been ok. Personally though, I can't work in my room (not noise, just distract myself) so it's nice having the Learning Grid (open 24/7) nearby.

Should be fine with either Westwood or Rootes, dunno anyone in Cryfields so I couldn't say. Obviously you can't pick for definite where you will be put don't worry about it anyway - just put down those three in the order that you fancy.

^ Agreed. Westwood is a lot of fun and pretty damn sweet

I think I am not gonna opt for an en-suite because it will save me some monies...
Atm I am thinking Rootes/Cryfield/Tocil/Whitefields.
Not sure whether to go for 30 or 39 week let.
Guys which of the 4 above wud you recommend. Thanks

Hey!
Right now I'm deciding whether or not to accept a Warwick offer and I was just wondering about the accommodation. I've been told it's likely I'll be sharing a room.
When you're sharing a room, are there opportunities to just chill out and relax on your own? - I mean generally at Warwick, when you're living on campus? I'm fine with room sharing, but I just wonder if it's all a bit stressful, if you're with people constantly all day?
I probably sound like a bit of a loner lol :o: but I do need space! Any advice please!?
Thanks

No it is not very likely that you will be sharing a room. Benefactors is the only accomodation where you can share and if you don't want to share then don't choose to go there.

Highly unlikely you'll be sharing a room. Whoever you were talking to was probably referring to Westwood sharing - a small amount of students have to share single rooms in Westwood for a few weeks because the university gives out too many offers. The people that share tend to be those who have had problems receiving their A-level results on time. It can be a bit of a nuisance but is resolved quite quickly as other students drop out etc.

I really wouldn't let the thought of sharing a room put you off coming to Warwick. The chances are you will never be faced with such a situation.

The Westwood blocks do. Great places to hang out.
I like the sound of rootes, but I do fancy an ensuite. What's Arthur vick like? Does it have a decent atmosphere?

I wanted 39 weeks so that I wouldn't have to move all my belongings back and forth, but I've started thinking it doesn't really matter. The choices for 39 weeks are a little limited, so forget that.

I want something fairly central (5/10 minutes from the SU and Tesco?) and preferably with ensuite but it's not essential. I'm a very sociable person.

I like the look of Jack Martin (ensuite, good location, heard good things about it), Rootes (heard it's meant to be very sociable and good location) and Tocil (39 weeks AFAIK, not heard a huge amount about this one though). What do you wonderful current students say?

Go for Jack Martin! Lol. I'm currently living in JM2, and you're description is right, it is incredibly central to most places - the SU, Tesco, Costcutters (for when that 10 minute trip to Tesco somehow seems to far away), Sports Centre, and indeed other accommodation if you have other/make friends living there (Tocil, Arthur Vick, Whitefields, Rootes will be less than a five minute walk away).

At £112 a week it's quite expensive, granted, and indeed likely to rise for the next academic year, but I personally believe it's (just about) worth it.

Regarding the 30/39 week thing, JM is obviously a 30-week let which can be slightly annoying with regards to moving your belongings, although there is a sizeable lockable cupboard in each room to put your stuff in, not to sure about the other accomodation, and there's also a large trunk room which you may be able to put stuff in (although it's mainly for the internationals)

I find Tocil to be slightly claustrophobic whenever I visit lol, the corridors are too narrow for my liking.

Hope this helps, if only a little!
JM1 here  The storage space is ridiculously good.. If the wardrobes were lockable fully then i'd never need to take anything home :p:

Eh, whatever people say about the price, it IS expensive. Though what you get for that is somewhat justified. People will say you don't need an ensuite, and that's definitely true - it's highly likely you'll be sharing in your second year anyway. My opinion is that i don't need it, but having it makes a lot of things much easier. You don't have to worry about taking long showers, getting up to go to the loo at 4am is easy peasy and if you go out on a bender and get completely wrecked - you're not throwing up all over a communal space. It's also handy because you get another cupboard to put all your toilet stuff in (you'll love it if you're a girl) and you don't have to cart it round when you want a wash.

Downsides are obviously the cost, at £30-40 more than say Rootes or Tocil, you're paying almost £1k extra - that's enough to cover most people's food + meals out for a year. The cleaners are ********* as people have said, to the point where you expect them to say "there was a crumb on your work surface so i couldn't clean it". But you get used to them, our cleaner takes forever to clean the kitchen - i get back from a 9am lecture (with an 11am after) to find that i can't have something to eat because the cleaner's been in there for the past hour and a half (and is still there when i leave).

My corridor is preeeetty noisy, people tend to talk quite loudly at 3am without realising that the doors aren't soundproof. I tend to shut my door when i've got serious work to do because the bass from down the hall is so distracting (but maybe it's because i'm lumbered with a hall full of humanities students with no work to do ). Rootes, from what i've seen is only really noisy at night. If you can work in the day, you'll have no problems. Sociability isn't a problem, i've found. You're likely to hang out with three groups of people: hallmates, soc mates and subject mates. I tend to hang around with mostly subject mates, but i've also made friends through societies.

To be honest, everywhere is 10 minutes from the SU if you walk at a normal pace. Even lakeside (i think) which is past the physics buildings on the opposite side of campus isn't that far away.

DO NOT GO FOR ARTHUR VICK. I have met one person from there in a term and that was passing in a corridor (head down, no eye contact even when introduced lol), JM is much better and cheaper!
