Perhaps because they generally must be fairly wealthy to study at Warwick as international students, and can therefore afford some of the nicest accommodation?

May be. Even If I was a rich **** I'd still not chose the most secluded.. oh well. Some things we shall never know

Whitefields are essentially a set of modified houses. Personally I loved the couple that I visited in my first year, but they won't be for everyone. I imagine they are quite intimate to live in - whilst in other halls you're divided by corridors
and can hop between them if you know the people, in Whitefields it is you and 11 others in one small building. Therefore depending on the people in there it could be a big advantage or a big disadvantage.

Cryfield's bedrooms are pretty small, hence the cheaper prices. They do have quite spacious common rooms though. No idea about atmosphere I'm afraid.

I was going to choose Rootes>Whitefields>Cryfield, but after visiting I didn't quite like Whitefields, as it felt separated, when in Rootes there's a long corridor and you can make more friends if you want. Cryfield has a huge common room, but it was empty, hopefully it's used for the parties on Fridays and Saturdays otherwise it felt a little bit boring.. I'm a really social person and love parties, so I want to end up in a social accommodation. Maybe Tocil instead of Whitefields? Any opinions?
Hey.
I didn't get to see any accomodation when I went to the open day so I'm pretty ignorant about all the halls.
I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me which would be the best hall for me? The rent isn't really an issue, but I'd like ensuite (for undergraduate) 30 or 39 weeks, and preferably a more sociable hall.
Thanks

I've heard Arthur Vick/Jack Martin is the most sociable for an en-suite, but Rootes is aparantley known for being sociable, although now it is a 39 week let

I'm thinking Claycroft, Jack Martin and maybe Tocil? Although not sure on the last one - Ideally I'm after something central and quite sociable, but not crazily so. I though Rootes at first, but I'm not really a 24/7 party-ness type! (I would describe myself as quiet..) I also think I'm being a bit ambitious budget-wise. Hmm I need to do more research.

If you get a 30 week let, then are there jobs around campus which allow you to work only during the 30 weeks? Cheers
By the way, the application for accommodation will be up at the end of this month or early next month and is NOT on a first come first serve basis.

Niiice. Thanks.
Please can you tell me the conditions?
I don't understand the whole applying for only 2 en suites. Does that still hold this time do you know?

Not completely sure what you mean by "conditions", but essentially you list up to six preferences for halls (minimum of three), in order, of which only one can be a 30-week ensuite and only one can be a 39-week ensuite. This is because ensuite applications are massively oversubscribed (and with Rootes becoming 39-week lets, I would guess this will become even more so now). Also, giving only three preferences with two of them en-suites won't increase your chances of getting an en-suite; if anything, it will just make life harder for you in the event of not getting an en-suite, as if the non en-suite choice is oversubscribed you might get put somewhere you really don't want.

The deadline is July 31st to be guaranteed accommodation with the university - everyone that applies before this date is on an equal footing. So don't rush to do it the second the application form goes live, because there's no point.
I live in Heronbank right now and really enjoying it. Fortunately I seem to be in one of the more active flats there (they do exist contrary to belief!) which is good, as some flats do seem depressingly quiet and lifeless. Don't find the distance to the union etc too much of an issue, just can be a bit annoying if you need some bread or milk etc.. However, it is claimed the new social building for Lakeside/Heronbank will be opened soon which should have basic food vending machines, which will no doubt help.

I was very glad to get 39 week let initially, but am not sure if 39 weeks is an advantage really. It is a lot of extra money to pay just to leave a few things in your room over the holidays.

Heya, loving the thread but have some questions...
Is it realistic to get somewhere relatively quiet in rootes as i need the lowest rent?
What's Tocil like in terms of social atmosphere, is it mainly postgrads/final years??
How easy is it to make friends living in a flat(or whitefields) rather than in corridors?
Thanks x
Rootes isn't lowest rent anymore, I'm afriad

Rootes is no longer the lowest rent as it's been moved to 39-week lets, but with regards quiet in there anyway, it is possible to get peace and quiet, but you shouldn't expect it. If you were to pick Rootes as your first choice and then say on your accommodation personal statement that you want to be put somewhere quiet, the chances are you will simply be put in your 2nd or 3rd choice hall which may be deemed more quiet, rather than be put in a Rootes corridor with 12 other people who also said they wanted to be in Rootes but wanted less noise. Once you actually are in Rootes however, it's relatively pot luck as to how noisy your corridor is or isn't. I never had a problem with sleeping in Rootes as my corridor was very outgoing without screaming the place down every night. This is actually the case with most corridors.

It shouldn't be much different at all. Many of the Whitefields houses almost certainly integrated with one another better than our corridor did with those above and to the side of us in Rootes. Whitefields does have more of a house feel, because that's exactly what it is, but all houses are within communities.
2009 Annual Rents (in ascending price):
RED = 30 weeks. All others are 39 weeks.
Cryfield - £2190
Whitefields - £2886
Westwood - £3120
Rootes - £3159
Benefactors (EN) - £3270
Tocil - £3354
Jack Martin (EN) - £3570
Arthur Vick (EN) - £3660

Claycroft - £4095
Heronbank (EN) - £4368
Lakeside (EN) - £4446

The way Rootes is priced as a 39 week accommodation means that the social aspect will still remain, as there are not enough cheap rooms at Whitefields/Cryfield and Westwood is too far away from the central campus.

What it does do is increase the number of applications to Tocil, Jack Martin and Arthur Vick  as they now seem more viable options.

For me it's JM>Tocil>Rootes

Same probably. Or may be Rootes and Tocil interchanged. Definitely JM first, though (y)
Hey I also have a few questions if people could answer it would be much appreciated!

Due to my health I need an en-suite bathroom although I really wanted to go to Rootes as I heard it was the most sociable. I really liked JM and was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on it? Does it have a good mix of people such as state/private, home/international? Just people who have gone to Warwick from my school all recommend Rootes and seeing as I can'y go there I would like a halls just as friendly. I also need to be really close to main campus if possible. Thanks in advance!
