I don't think Warwick or any university would release such figures. Possibly because it would highlight that the % of applicants that get their first choice is very low.

Based on some of things said on the forum and on open days, its mostly down to pot luck. People have got accomodation that weren't even on their lists.

I'm more interested in whether or not someone who puts Tocil as first choice is more likely to get it than someone who puts it as second choice behind an ensuite- surely Warwick accomodation can answer me that?

Oh! Well, if you put any non-ensuite before an ensuite then you are more than likely to get it. So yeh, if you put Tocil first, and someone else had put an ensuite in first then Tocil, you would be more likely to get it.

I know that that's the way it SHOULD work, but people on here keep saying "you've got nothing to lose by applying for an ensuite", which confused me into thinking it can't actually work like that.

But do you even want an ensuite?
If you really don't mind whether or not you get the ensuite, put it as second. Additionally and hopefully that way, people who really want the ensuite, would be more likely to get it.

Of course I would prefer an ensuite, and as I've said I'm really going to struggle sharing a bathroom with people who use that bathroom to vomit in following nights out. Plus I have pretty severe IBS and have to spend a lot of time on the toilet... but will have to squat on a shared toilet, which is sure to be uncomfortable.

But I had sort of agreed with myself that I wouldn't go for ensuite because my parents think its unneccesary expense- they don't get why I don't just apply for the bottom three priced accomodation in ascending order- and I know I'm going to struggle financially so an extra five hundred pounds saved would be pretty good.

One thing pushing me towards applying for ensuite is knowing that I will definitely be coming back home during holidays, so it seems a waste of money paying for nine extra weeks. I don't think I'll need anywhere to leave my stuff, because my dad lives in the West Midlands and is generally available, so I reckon he'd be able to pick me up whenever and I'll just leave all my stuff at his.

Does Cryfield really have a theft problem, btw?

Cryfield? Theft problem? I hope not! I've not heard anything like that about it and I've read all of the pages on this thread.

Yes, I see what you mean. Based on what you've said, I reckon you should go for the ensuite - especially with IBS - I get that occasionally and that pain is just :eek3:. Sharing bathrooms with IBS is not the most practical situation, be sure to mention it on your form.

As for the financial aspect, have you sort of worked out what you are entitled to? If you could sort that out, it might help you form a decision.
I'm in the same situation, I live in the West Midlands too, and paying for 39 weeks is not really sensible when it wouldn't take long to get home.

I live in the East Midlands, not the West Midlands- I don't live with my dad. But still, I don't live too far away.

Is the form just about what type of a person you are? If I write about paying for 39 weeks being a waste of money, and that I have IBS, will that do? Because I don't know much about myself as a person. Sometimes I can be realy sociable and up for anything, but sometimes I just want to sit in a corner and not be disturbed. And I like my sleep and I like a clean environment.

Sorry my bad. :o:

Well from what I know, you get asked a few "yes" and "no" questions such as would you mind living in a single sex area? would like to be in a non-smoker area? And then you get a little About Me section where you can write pretty much anything you want. Definately mention the IBS especially if it is severe, I, myself, am struggling on how to write politely that 39 week lets will be a waste for me but the only other accomodation I like apart from Arthur Vick are 39 week lets.

That bit in bold - is pretty much what you would write in the about me section. But I definately wouldn't write nothing about my habits because then you might get put with people who you have nothing in common with - which could end up being a good thing in terms of experience and discovery but most likely to be a nightmare if you can't find a way to get along.
Lady Justice
But I can't pick who I live with :frown: I don't understand human beings who think its acceptable to live and eat in a pig sty, and who are selfish enough to dirty communal areas without cleaning them. If I get given Rootes I'm not sure I can go to uni next year; I can' afford to go en-suite but I won't actually be able to use a bathroom that countless other people have vomitted in after nights out, and that's the impression I've been given of Rootes.

How often are bathrooms cleaned?

And how long do you reckon my bladder can go without emptying?

Put on your application that you are cleanliness obsessive then. I put down something about liking things to be clean and my corridor was fairly good. One guy was a nightmare but I survived though I'm mentally scarred for life after finding a tin of sweetcorn in the fridge that had turned completely blue. It was so bad I actually cried. Most of the time it wasn't bad compared to other kitchens. Some were really disgusting!

As for vomiting in the toilets, most people don't make it to the toilet when drunk I'm afraid. Sinks in rooms get vomited in more frequently as do bins and floors in my experience. I get really freaked out by vomit but thankfully despite a year in Rootes I was never really aware of much vomit in the toilets. Plus they get cleaned everyday and theres more than one! Oh and vomit after nights out isn't isolated to Rootes so anywhere without ensuite will potentially have the same issues.

Pretty rare for all the toilets on a rootes floor to be vomited in by many people.
If someone gets drunkill chances are the others on the floor are going to take them home.
The floor would have to be pretty hardcore to have many people throwing up all over the place.

I would advise to approach a possible year in Rootes with a fairly relaxed attitude to cleanliness (and indeed a relaxed attitude to everything)
Mind you you should be aiming for that wherever you are staying.

Its only one year after all.

Oops, sorry then, sista :P. (just for the record, I looked for a gender indicator, but it wasn't there, so I guess I randomly picked the brotha thing :P).

Anyway, I finally made my decision for my first choice, guess it's also going to be an ensuite, which is Arthur Vick. Rootes will probably come second in my preferences in the end because when I want to sleep, I REALLY want to sleep, and I become aggressive if I can't, haha.

i really really want Arthur Vick - i dont want to be in a really rowdy place but im scared I'll get stuck with really unsociable people or people who wont understand that they cant touch my kitchen stuff lol

Does the bold not describe Jack Martin, the cheaper of the two en suites on campus. Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that JM was the socialable one, usually, whereas AV can be a bit.. reserved, with moody tutors telling you to stfu after midnight

No way I would be able to take a RELAXED attitude towards other people being unhygenic in a place where I have to live! Why should I?! I can't stay in Rootes, I just can't, and I definitely can't afford ensuite, so I don't know what to do. I have a feeling Cryfield will become just as bad as Rootes in terms of cleanliness and noise what with it being the cheapest next year.

Erm, why are you equating price with the levels of hygeine of people living in those halls? I should point out that you're really not actually going to be tiptoeing through vomit and rubbish in any corridor, including Rootes. People don't actually go out every night, come back and then all take it in turns to throw up into the communal toilets (unless you live with 12 rugby lads, which isn't going to happen). When people have had too much it's far more likely to be in their own sink, and even if it isn't the cleaners are there every morning during the week anyway.

The worst case personal scenario is you'll have a messy kitchen, which are cleaned daily; if the cleaners aren't happy with the state of dishes etc when they come in at 8 in the morning, they'll quite possibly wake everyone up to move them. In this regard there is absolutely no difference between Rootes, Cryfield, Arthur Vick, Jack Martin or wherever. Happy Dinosaur mentioned that she put down she was cleanliness-obsessive on her form - I was in her corridor, I didn't write the same and thinking back I can't imagine anyone else did either, so there was an element of luck of the draw as we were a reasonably tidy kitchen in general.

With any halls, you have to be open-minded. Rootes gets a reputation: it's the largest and most open set of halls, and yes it tends to be the most sociable. There will be mess occasionally, but you really aren't signing yourself up for a year of living in a shanty town. You can't distinguish between dfferent halls on this basis either. Essentially I have to be honest: if you can't tolerate the idea of hall inhabitants treating their living space like a random selection of 12 above-intelligence 18 year olds do, even though the communal areas are cleaned daily, you should seriously consider not applying to halls at all.

You're going to be living with real people, not a bunch of disease-ridden animals :s-smilie:
