:erm:

I can't believe the number of people who are telling me this.

Anyhow, it's to do Maths.

Don't listen to them! The important thing is that you go to a uni where you will be happy, that you like and where the course is what you want to do. And Warwick is hardly a bad uni.

erm...anyway...

I've almost made my final decision - just trying to decide between cost and the ones I like - is it just me or does Warwick seem quite expensive compared to some? It's certainly generally more than my insurance.

With me it's the opposite at least in the accomodation I want to stay in. I thought that Warwick was one of the cheapest

Yea..Well it depends on what you want to do in the future.

For Maths, Imperial would have been my choice.

LSE can be good depending on what career you are looking at but Warwick>LSE for Maths.

Most people who study maths at Warwick have rejected Imperial.

oh ok. Well personally I think Imperial's Maths Department is better than Warwick's. That's just me though.

Out of interest, what makes you think that?

Obviously I am not saying Warwick is **** because it certainly ain't, it's very good for Maths indeed. But I think Imperial has the edge in terms of reputation.

Like for example, if we were comparing Warwick Economics and LSE Economics.

Don't worry, I'm not trying to start an argument/debate here. Just curious as to what makes you think one has the edge over the other.

You still haven't answered my question though! Is it say, league tables that make you think that Imperial has the edge? What your friends have said? Something else? If you don't want to justify your claim that's fine with me.

No that's fine I will justify it.

1) Basically my college has a really good Maths Department and they think Imperial is better than Warwick for Straight Maths. Obviously this is not taking into account stuff like London being expensive etc.

2) The times University Guide (What many people think is the most reliable) ranks Imperial higher for Maths.

3) I know 3 people, 2 are doing Masters in Maths at reputable universities who all think Imperial is better than Warwick. But not MUCH better. Just better.

4) I seriously considered doing Maths instead of A&F and did lots of research into which unis were the best for Maths. Imperial seemed > Warwick.

I'll politely disagree with most of your arguments as suggesting that one is better than the other, but cheers for justifying your claim.

1) Although I have a lot of respect for college maths teachers, they usually know close to nothing about university maths departments. And almost certainly base their views on the fact that Imperial as an institution ranks highly in world rankings. At least my college's maths department seemed to work that way.

2) Though I personally believe league tables have no value whatsoever, this year's Complete University Guide and Guardian both rank Warwick third and higher than Imperial. And generally Warwick ranks higher than Imperial in the maths subject-based league tables.
http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/single.htm?ipg=8727
http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2009/may/12/university-guide-mathematics

3) In a few months I will be doing my masters in mathematics (and probably PhD) at Oxford and believe Warwick is a better choice. In a survey of academics by the Guardian, it was rated together with Cambridge as the mathematics course they would most like to send their children to.

If you're interested in getting unbiased information about the relative strenghts of maths departments, have a look at: http://www.maths.manchester.ac.uk/~bl/maths_league/uk-maths-league-tables.html
He introduces the term COWI (Cam, Ox, War, Imp) in reference to the top maths departments in the country, taking into account many variables like research input, awards, undergraduate entry requirements etc.

Hmm..

I know there isn't much between Warwick and Imperial but it looks like we are arguing more about which league tables to trust.

I'm not a big fan of the guardian tables. UWE ahead of Imperial for Maths?
Offtopique, would also choose Imperial. It's just... more sciency that Warwick. Moreover it's in London. Guardian tables may not be the most relevant criterion in choosing your uni, but that's mainly what it comes down to when we're "talking numbers" about how good/prestigious/appropriate for you a uni is. Just think of what kind of people, teaching, lifestyle would you really enjoy and connect the dots (information-wise, that is)... TA-DA! And you answer will reveal for itself.

On-topic... ****, forgot my question as I was debating Imperial vs. Warwick, lol. Should really stop drinking tons of coffee and loosing sleep pre-finals-like. I'll get back when my memory does...

You missed my point, the only reason I quoted them was because you quoted them too! I'm not arguing which league tables to trust, they are all useless at best. I have seen dozens and dozens of them year after year ever since I started applying to universities back in 2005 and most of them can be ridiculously misleading as they are based on ridiculous/outdated/inconclusive data. Which I believe is one of the reasons why Manchester's Professor Lionheart created the website I provided the link for, possibly the best reference when it comes to choosing which university to study maths. He provides raw data, most of which seem very useful for both undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics students.

I'm not usually cocky (well maybe sometimes!) but as someone who has actually done and finished a maths degree, been through the whole system, seen what researchers do best and researched stuff like this to death (especially with regards to PhD oppurtunities) I can tell you that there's nothing between them. But Warwick does seem to come across as powerhouse for mathematics as the university made the subject pretty much its main priority when the university was created.

Imperial is also more "sciency" than Oxford...

argh! having applied for accomodation before finding this thread (stupid I know) and arthur vick, I am now kind of scared as to what kind of anti social environment I'm going to be in.
Please, surely there's someone who's sociable in arthur vick out there?

If Arthur Vick is what you initially liked then stick to it, no-one knows how sociable it will be come October.. If not you can always e-mail them now and get it changed i think...

Hey! I'm the same, I put AV as my first choice but I'm looking to go out alot and for a sociable corridor. I said this in the personal description on the accomadation application so hopefully they will match sociable people up together. I think it should be alright though, there's just alot of stereotyping on TSR with the different halls.

yeah as someone said you can always change it. I changed mine from JM to Rootes on advice from some friends at the uni. You can also change your about me section as well.

Finally sent mine off! Chose Cryfield, Rootes and Whitefields.

Yeah, of course there are sociable people in Av but you will have to work to find them whereas they may not be immediatly accessible as in Rootes etc.
And the AV blocks vary within themselves.

Usually quite a few people who have picked Av not for its quietness but for its ensuite and are just as up for going out as the rest of the freshers.

Yes, it is. That's why it depends a lot of what type of person you are. If I wanted to do science, Imperial would have been my first option, ahead of Oxford or Cambridge (for undergrad studies though). And that's because it's in London as well, which would make a big difference to me. I wasn't saying that the fact that it's more "sciency" makes it a better university, period. I was just bringing another aspect in discussion.
I changed mine from JM to Rootes on advice from some friends at the uni.

Can I ask what just being nosy? For health reasons my parents would rather I went JM but I have feeling I'd be happier in Rootes!
