Hey there!
Are JM and AV the only halls that have a lot of first years? I find them a little pricey :/ Are there any other halls that have a good social environment?

Thanks

What do you mean "a lot of first years"? :holmes: Take a look at TheTallOne's guide in the OP, he's listed all halls available to first years :yep:. All of them can have a good social environment, Rootes is probably the noisiest.

Most of the 5700 or so rooms are taken up by first years, only 3 blocks are not for first years out of the 13 that are here.

First years are generally kept separate from the others, I believe.
Thanks
I just checked the full list of facilities for every hall - I'd LOVE to stay at JM or AV but the prices just went up for 2010/2011!
Has anyone lived at Rootes before?

All prices have gone up. And plenty of people live in Rootes. It's an amazing place and they had the Rootes Ball yesterday (together with Benefactors and Whitefields). I don't think we have one :frown:

Bear in mind the constuction work there next year though - it's a bit of a lottery if you are going to be placed on the noisy side or not.

When you say that Rootes is the noisiest hall, are you talking about social buzz (made up by laughter and talking) or are you talking about drunken students (screaming outside your room)? :P

Both, really. Many people would agree that it's the most sociable block on campus, but at the same time, but at the same time it can be the most anti-social too. Not to mention the regular 3am fire alarms! Not wanting to put you off or anything, it's a fun place to live :p:. Everyone has their fair share of fire alarms anyway.

The reason why i'm asking is because i'm considering Rootes and Tocil as my first choices. I don't want to go to Tocil if it's dead silent there, then I'd rather go to Rootes. Which one would you prefer and for what reasons?

Tocil is quite "average" really, it's not as quiet as some halls but it's not as loud as places like Rootes. If you're unlucky then you'll get a quiet kitchen, but that doesn't mean you can't explore and meet other people. Generally it would be fine though. Fewer fire alarms, too :p:.

I'd choose Tocil myself, mainly because I doubt I'd fit in at Rootes. As for facilities and general "niceness", I'm not too sure. I'd hazard a guess at saying New Rootes > Tocil > Old Rootes, but I'm really not sure, and if you apply for Rootes it's pot luck whether you get old or new, you can't request one or the other.

I guess I'll have to think things through.. Right now I'm thinking: "I'd rather be in a hall that's too loud than too quiet" but we'll see

Thanks for the help!

It should be within the next month or so, judging by previous years. It's not first-come-first-served anyway, so it doesn't matter that much either way.

:gasp: really?? If it's not first come first served, then how would they allocate it?? Random??

Everyone who applies before a certain date (July 1st or July 31st, I think, my memory is dodgy) are all considered on equal footing, and after that it's your own fault if you apply late. A bit like the UCAS process actually. Accommodation is not allocated randomly as such (though if there are too many people applying for one accommodation block then they probably use random methods to choose), the accommodation team will try to assign everyone according to a) your preferences and b) your "about me" section that you write on the application form, if giving you your first choice isn't possible. There's a link in my sig to the newly-updated accommodation thread, there's more info on allocation there.
Claycroft.

Done.
I agree with andcho, I'd really like to meet a lot of new people and to have fun  so I should be choosing Rootes.
What's the difference between New Rootes and Old Rootes?
By the way, I got an invitation from WBS for an open day on april 28th, will I be able to visit the dorms?

As far as I know, the only difference really is that Old Rootes was built earlier than New Rootes :dontknow:. Obviously this means New Rootes is more modern, perhaps "nicer", but that's subjective really. I'm not sure about the open day, I believe it depends on your course and I don't know much about WBS. You may very well be taken inside one accommodation block, but you won't see all of them.

That's good. Go with Rootes
Are you also going to be a WBS student? That's cool. Which course?
Management!
But I'm probably going to be switching courses, I don't know to which though. How about you?

Same here. I wanted to switch to A&F but they wouldn't let me. Might switch when I get there though. No, I'm not going to the open day. But it would be cool if you could tell me about WBS when you get back!
