SO do go for the 30 week ones as priority if you dont want to spend your holidays at uni. Youll find that even paying £20 more pw works out cheaper paying 9 less weeks!
This is definitely a reasonable point. Although I had had a glance at the accommodation, this fact is going to influence some "early choices" (albeit I'm sure I'd realise this as soon as I'd begin to "work on it" ) Well, I'm from Portugal (Algarve ) and obviously I'm not going to spend the holidays in the UK. My question is: If I were to get a 30 week contract, would there be any place which I could use to store my stuff (for a price, I presume) - this could either be from the university or anywhere else really.

cheers.
I think most (all?) blocks have schemes in place for this. AV has trunk rooms that can be used to store international students' belongings over the holidays (for free, I think). AV also had a small lockable cupboard in each room but that probably wouldn't be sufficient.

The small lockable cupboard in JM, AV and Cryfield just about stored my kitchen utensils and toiletries and that's about it. And it was packed vertically to the top. I know that JM and AV have trunk rooms - anyone can go in them during the 4 days before you leave so it is left at your own risk and priority will be given to you. Also consider leaving some stuff at a friends who lives in Rootes/Tocil as the trunk room isn't that big either.

When I was in my 30 week accommodation the international students got access to storage containers both inside and outside the residences. Think this was free however I don't know if it still goes on. There are private companies locally that can stash your stuff over the holidays as well.
Or you can dump some stuff with a 39 week friend (or split it between several 39 week friends)

oh that seems reasonable, thanks.
by the way, out of interest really BENEFACTORS or TOCIL
by the way, out of interest really BENEFACTORS or TOCIL
Benefactors is almost undoubtedly nicer (in my opinion). Some rooms are shared though - I am unsure as to whether you can choose not to share, I think you can, someone else can confirm this for you. Since Benefactors is so small, the chances of you getting it if you put it as your 2nd/3rd choice is absolutely minimal, so put it as your first choice if you're going to put it at all.
To add to secretmessages: Benefactors works out to be the cheapest ensuite accommodation (even though you may still share with another person, you can't apply to JM/AV/Heronbank). It's the second cheapest if you are sharing and I personally think it is great value for money. You can't choose shared or not (but you could be able to hint it by giving your weekly price range). Otherwise, you are twice as likely to be shared than single. Another con is that you have 22 or 24 to a kitchen and the more people to a kitchen there are the more likely people steal food/use your stuff. Seeing as there are only 75 or so places, I would strongly suggest applying to it as your first choice with a series of good backups (at least 3). Also remember than this is a 30 week let.
Tocil is also very nice - it's listed as being 'flats' and it somewhat is - you live in a block of 6 flats, and I think you share the same stairwell with two other flats - the other 3 being across on the other side of the building. Each flat has a front door and that can be locked if you don't want people entering from the outside (unlike corridors). It's kind of a halfway house between corridors and actual flats (Whitefields) as you have up to three times as many people who you can visit without going outside (compared to Whitefields) but a third less than what's available to corridors. There's a very nice family feel to some of the flats and you end up with closer knit groups. Perhaps groups of 9 and 12 are better than 6 as there's more people to like and you are less likely to get everyone being anti-social, and maybe they give some 6 person flats to final year/postgrads, but it very much depends on luck and with the warden. It's the most expensive accommodation where you share bathroom facilities with a large number of people (Claycroft is between 2 so it doesn't really count) and Jack Martin (en suite) only costs £159 more, but that's a 30 week let compared to the 39 week Tocil let.
Also check out the pricing section in the FAQ - in the Original Post of this thread.
hey, i am looking for the cheapest accomodation possible, but at the same time i dont want it to be unbeliveably tiny and totally far away or completely unsociable. I can pay few more pounds a week if that would make some noticeable difference. What's my best shot? I can see that Cryfields is the chepeast one. What is it like? Also, 39weeks rent period means that we're paying for the room during the christmas or easter break when generally we're not at the uni but just back home?
i am in cryfield this year, altho it is off to the left of campus it is far closer to everywhere else than heronbank/westwood, its slightly further to the gym and tescos than rootes/AV/JM etc but youre talking an extra 2-5minutes depending how fast you walk so nothing extensive like the trek from westwood to main campus! Its really sociable as well, there are 22 people on my corridor (2 kitchens) and we all get on really well, ive never had any problems with stuff being stolen etc, we all go out together, drink together etc. My friends bf is in JM and he only goes out with 3/4 of the people he lives with and my friend last year who lived there said it was only her and her friend who ever drank! Everyone I have spoken to who lives elsewhere is amazed at how sociable we all are!
The rooms are small, definitely the smallest on campus, but everything fits and its nice and cosy. I visited a friend in westwood the other day and was amazed, her room is at least 50% bigger than mine but its all bare and looks really empty, whereas mine is slightly cluttered but at least feels homely! If you have a keyboard or anything bulky like that that needs floor space i wouldnt reccomend it but otherwise youll be fine!
The corridors are really longg (11 bedrooms and a kitchen on each side) whereas in other halls theyre L shaped, which makes it look slightly prison like, and theyre narrow, but i like it as you can easily see whats happening in the corridor and the narrowness means theyre fun to climb!
Basically, cryfield is awesome, and also really cheap (Y). The cheapness also means noone is at all stuck up, whereas friends in other accomodations have complained of this!
Hi again! I'm wondering what Lakeside is like? It doesn't have it on the map but at the Warwick website it says it's now also for 1st year undergrads. The facilities sound good so I was mainly wondering about atmosphere, thanks

Any chance you could post a link?
I think we have to ask some final years for their opinion on this one
Nah - it's a flat of 12, with two bathrooms and one kitchen.
But it's a secluded flat and if I was applying this year I would avoid it.
hum ho it would seem that mr tour man lied to me
where would you apply if you were me? i want somewhere sociable, i.e. somewhere that doesn't mind me being drunk all the time and my incessant bad singing. wow, i sell myself well

I see you are social. Rootes. It does mean you are sharing bathrooms between a largish number but there's plenty of stuff going down there. In fact I'm going there in 45 minutes
Cryfield, Tocil are also well placed for this, and if you want ensuite then consider Jack Martin.
BTW Check out the OP on this thread as I'm updating it. I've basically got individual halls descriptions to do but there are some already in this thread.
I take it you're also firming Warwick Now there are more people to stalk . Tour guides are all students and know nothing basically. They get paid £10 an hour to walk people around. I'm going to apply to do that next year.
Maybe they haven't updated the more information page yet? Or maybe they made a mistake on the blurb?
The blurb also says 2008/09. I don't think first years are living in Lakeside this year (well I don't know any). They could have done last year. Lakeside and Heronbank are newer developments and are all ensuite - also only 8 to a kitchen which is very nice.

Ok! Thanks very much, it's probably Jack Martin as my first choice then

six to a bathroom is ridiculous imo! what about tocil? is tocil social?! JM was my first choice but apparently it is 'boring' and 'everyone locks their doors and never comes out' and i don't like boring!
HURRY UP THEN
yeah, i am. maybe. depends what results i get tomorrow! you were stalking me already though tbh
