what would you do if you worked in a shop and the boss was on holiday. when cashing up you realise that the till has been down several days (upto £15) and then you realise that someone has been opening the till more than they should for no obvious reason during everyone's lunch (when she was alone). you alos discover payouts that have been unaccounted for (although you don't know who did them). the till's only down on the days one girl works (there is a very small staff anyway) but she is very friendly with the boss + the only one the manager actually socialises with... we know head office will ring next week about it, but don't quite know how to say what we think, the boss would accuse anyone but this girl and we don't want to make unfounded accusations without proper proof

i would be very careful about making allegations you are not very sure about. but i think you should tell the boss and let him make his decisions on the evidence.

Make sure you're never alone at the till so that you cannot be accused. Do you have CCTV in the shop? That way you could catch her? Otherwise, do as amazingtrade says and report it, keeping it a secret is just more suspicious.

it will have to be reported, the manager is away at the moment. the till is often down a bit but to be honest the manager is crap, there is zero security in the shop. we'll prob get a ring on tuesday from head office for being down more than 2 days in a row. no we don't have cctv and the boss is really good mates with the girl we think it is and would probably do anything to pretend nothing's going on (probably to cover her own back as much as anything cos she doesn't run the shop properly)

I hope you get the situation sorted too. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

    BTW, where do you work?

cheers, it really is. there was 3 of us in work today and we all kinda figured it out, but it took us ages to actually have the guts to tell the others who we thought it was. and we don't really know what to tell head office. i'm not in monday, but the other 2 are with the one they think it is. my 2 mates are going to clear the stockroom (one of the jobs that really needs doing) and they're going to do till checks before and after they do it to see if she does anything while she's in work. hopefully they can get some evidence and tell head office tuesday. it's just a nasty atmosphere at work at the mo

I work in a shop, and we had someone doing a similar thing once, but without the friendship with the manager. The atmosphere is horrible when you suspect someone, but if your colleagues back you up you should be alright - hopefully you can get that evidence. Fingers crossed for you.

I'd mention it if you specifically get asked, is there a deputy manager or someone else who gets on better with the boss perhaps they should bring it up with the boss.

I had a similar situation once myself. The float was down luckily I noticed I rang the boss and said that I thought something very odd was going on but didnt mention who i thought it was and the boss worked it out for himself.

we only have a very small staff. th manager, the girl we think, and then the 3 of us who were in today (none of which get on with the manager). i really think it will be dealt with by head office- they will go crazy when they find we're monety down while the manager is away. it just annoys me that because our boss is so lenient about security that we're in this entire mess. if we turn out to be right then out boss is in deep trouble (cos she makes up till checks, doesn't do the proper bag checks she should, doesn't check no sales, pretends the till always has the correct money etc.)
