TSR isn't awash with Mansfielders, but I see you have joined our fb group; it will be far less lonely there

Not sure that it's possible to last three years at Mansfield without facebook!

Do you know your college parents yet?

Hi Emmeline, this is you currently absentee college father! Sorry I haven't been in contact sooner. This isn't a particularly active group, so its best to use the facebook group.

Well, I was exaggerating somewhat. You won't need it for academic reasons, but the college has its own fb group to let us know about events and plans, then the Entz reps use it to tell us about the latest irresponsible social diversions from study that they have concocted. I'm afraid that more or less everyone seems to enjoy procrastinating on fb. I don't actually use it for anything except for college, but I'm such a Luddite (ancient mature student) that if I've found it indispensable I can't see you resisting its lure forever.

Welcome to Mansfield, you will have the time of your life here:smile:

Hi! I met my college mum at the Friends and Family Day. It seems like we have a very confusing family... She tried to explain who all my siblings, half-siblings, and half-nephews/nieces are but I got very confused! Hopefully I'll meet everyone next week!! Will you be in college during Freshers' Week?

Hello!
I am considering applying to Oxford for law.
I initially really wanted to apply to Corpus Christi, but after looking around I see that Mansfield accepts a lot more state school students and seems really friendly...
What do you guys think? And how many law students do you have per year?

I have AAAAB at Higher, 8 1's at standard grade and I am predicted pretty high grades this year!
I went to UNIQ for law and also attended a summer school at Yale, and I've done some further reading and visited courts and stuff...

Hi there.I read History at Mansfield but you may not get a response from a Law student cos not many Mansfielders visit TSR.

I recently responded to a similar post from someone considering either Magdalen or Mansfield for Law, maybe worth a look:

http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=85158&page=178&p=44685912&highlight=#post44685912

It is very friendly here; Mansfield and Corpus Christi are the two smallest colleges so there's more chance of getting to know everyone.

Mansfield usually takes four Law students. You're right about the state school proportion. However, it also gets more state school applications . I mean, some colleges whose state school proportion looks poor would love to have more of them to choose from. Also, last year 13 Law applicants chose Mansfield as their preferred college and none of them got an offer; the four offers went to candidates who initially applied to other colleges (you're OK on how this works?). Not trying to put you off! Just underlining a point that current Oxford students often make on TSR, which is that it's not really worth using admission stats or related assumptions to try to improve chances. Best to apply to the college that suits you best in terms of location, size, ambiance etc.

Best of luck
FINALLY... Decided that I'm applying to Mansfield college.
Just wondering what the area surrounding this college is like? I'm a bit of an outside runner - is there any 'open spaces' kind of areas?
Oh and I know it's close to the city centre but how close would you say the train station is ? Thanks

Hi. Yes, you have a couple of good jogging options. The University Parks are a couple of minutes away http://www.parks.ox.ac.uk/

..and then another couple of minutes and you are at the sports fields that Mansfield shares with Merton

http://www.ouafc.com/grounds/view/15/Merton-College-Sports-Ground

The problem with the train station isn't that Mansfield is far from the city centre (it's 5 mins walk) but that the station isn't anywhere near the city centre! I would say that it's maybe 15-20 minutes walk to the station from Mansfield.

Ahh right thankyou for your help, I suppose 15-20 min walk isn't too bad  and the parks look quite nice.

Hi I'm considering Mansfield but I'm not sure whether to d an open application.
Am I less likely to get an offer if I do an open application.
Also what college is the best for sports or most sporty? I'm also a state student and would probably prefer to be with fellow state schoolers

Hi. There is no difference either way in terms of chances of an offer.

Mansfield is enthusiastic and competitive for sports, but as a small college we pair up with Merton for some of our teams, and we don't have the on-site gym facilities that some larger colleges may have.

Mansfield has the highest proportion of state schoolers of any Oxford college, but once you are at Oxford there isn't some great divide between students from different school types and backgrounds. I wouldn't worry about this point tbh.

Best of luck

I have been given a e mail via skype , so if anyone got any tips, that would be great
Hello, I am an offer holder for Mansfield College and I was wondering what the music facilities are like here. Is there anywhere to practice an instrument and what is the music society like (e.g. are there an orchestra/concert band)?

Hi. Congrats on your offer. What instrument do you play? And were you interviewed at Mansfield; I mean, do you remember the various rooms and buildings?

I have grade 8 clarinet and I also play the flute a bit. I didn't get that much of a look around as I spent about 90% of my time at Mansfield in my room (panicking). I heard recently that the chapel can be used for practicing- but aside from that I know nothing about music facilities/societies. Mansfield was my first choice and I was interviewed there and at St. Catherine's.
