1. Yes, the university gym on Iffley Road is decent [its not stylish, but it'll have everything you'd need], cheap (£60 a year or something like that) and reasonably close, 15-20 mins walk or a short cycle. There is a swimming pool there too, but you have to pay extra for that. The college doesn't have any gym facilities of its own, so you're not getting anything in that regard you wouldn't get in every college - but I'm not sure other colleges have gyms anyway.

2. No. In first year you've got a very high chance of getting ensuite (possibly 100% now they've built the new building) but there are still some college rooms in A, B, C and D blocks that aren't ensuite, they have 1 bathroom / 4 rooms on each staircase, and a sink only in each room. Mostly these rooms are snapped up by finalists however, as although they lack ensuite they're much bigger, U shapped rooms that have larger desks and usually two beds, ideal if you want to put someone up, or if you want to construct a 'double.' In third year you'll be in college accomodation, and if you wanted a ensuite you'd be unlucky not to get it in the ballot, but its not a sure thing.
2nd years live out, i'd say your chances of getting an ensuite renting without spending silly money is very low.

3. Yes, there are kitchens on every floor in E block, which any one living on site can use, so you'll be able to self-cater. (there might be kitchens in the new block too, but i've never bothered to look).

4. Yes, iirc from my maths friends, the maths department is very close. Keeble college is closer, but thats probably about it. However, you'll be living out in second year, so you might want to keep that in mind, a 5 minute cycle in 1st and 3rd year might be a 15 or 20 minute one if you're stuck down in Cowley. Although if you get a house in Jericho, you'll probably be just as close in 2nd. (the majority of second years will probably be on the Cowley or iffley roads though).

p.s. I doubt I'll check this thread without cause, so if anyone wants me to reply to something (i'm a current phd student elsewhere but did undergrad at mansfield and a MA in Oxford, finishing in '08) send me a pm saying you've posted so i get an email sent to me, so i can check the forum. (don't pm me a question as that doesn't help anyone else out!).

Hey
I was wondering what the computer facilities are like - I will be coming to Mansfield without a laptop and I don't want to be at a disadvantage compared to other students when it comes to handing in essays etc. Is it worth investing in a laptop? (I would rather not tbh, if the facilities are good enough.)

Hey,

There is a computer room with ~15 computers as well as some essay writing computers in the Theology Library (not connected to the internet so you can't check bbc news instead of working - useful, sortof...) As most students do bring their own computers there is almost always at least one free, mostly the people that use them are just printing off essays, so the facilities should be comfortably sufficient to get by without one.

I don't think you'd be at any significant disadvantage, one of my friends did all his essays on the theology library computers. It depends on whether you need absolute silence to work or not. The theology library is pretty quiet during the day as you'd expect, but late night (1-2am onwards) it might be pretty busy as its a nice place to cram (especially in trinity) and you might get distracted if you need total silence. Likewise the computer room doesn't have a silence policy - although people shouldn't be too loud, there is likely to be a lot of coming and going which might distract you.

If you're pretty organised and are going to get your work done during the day, you really shouldn't have any problem at all.

It might also depend on subject. If you're doing an arts subject you'll probably spend a lot of time on the computer. Some tutors will expect you to email them an essay before the tute, some will want you to bring a printed copy, but either way you're going to be spending a lot of time on the computer. if you're doing a science the lecture notes and problem sheets might be posted online, but you could always print those off and the work you hand in will be handwritten, so a computer will be less important.

anyway, hope that helps!

Cheers! I'm doing an arts subject so maybe on second thoughts it would be better to get a laptop - I'll go shopping around for some deals!

yeah, just noticed you're doing geo. gratz on getting in - mansfield has a load of geographers so you'll be in good company.

If its a case of 'not sure if its worth it' i'd say you'll use it enough to justify it, but if you're worried about the cost you'll be able to manage fine without it. any other questions, feel free to ask... you should probably hear from some college parents soon though (if you haven't already)!

Prospective Maths applicant here!

What is the infrastructure like of Mansfield compared to the other colleges. e.g. does it have nice open spaced gardens etc. Also do Mansfield students face any disadvantages compared to the Merton students when they use the Merton sports facilities and is it possible to play less popular sports?

Best way to decide what you think of the grounds is to pay mansfield a visit, it doesn't need to be organised, if you just ask at the podge they shouldn't have a problem letting you wander about a bit.

as for the sports, i don't believe there is a bias, but merton has more students and so in terms of representation presumably garners a larger perecentage of the mansfield/merton teams. (We say mansfield/merton, they say merton/mansfield... go figure)

If you're keen on a minority sport - and you're even half good - you're probably be knocking somewhere close to blues level anyway, as minority sports (say shooting or something) don't have collegiate representation.

p.s. the maths tutors at mansfield - janet especially - are highly regarded by students, so its a decent choice
Does anybody have the name or contact information of the admissions tutors for Mansfield? Do they have separate ones for each college? Subject? If so, Mansfield admissions tutor for English.

Tutor for Admissions at Mansfield is Lucinda Rumsey (who is also a tutor in English, as far as I am aware)

I don't think they have separate ones for each subject, that I know of.

Well , officially an applicant here now! anyone else...
I have an interview in a week for English  Really looking forward to it!
Good luck to all prospective Mansfieldians
Hi, I was pooled to Mansfield from Merton (which I am really pleased about) and have got an offer!!!! (english by the way) However, it does mean that I don't know anybody and have no idea what the college is like, are there any other people out there with offers for english?
Obviously this thread is not very active! However, I thought I'd give it another try because I wanted to ask a quick question. At Mansfield are you allowed a mini-fridge in your room? My Mum's talking about getting me one and I just wanted to check that if I get my grades (finger crossed!) I'd be able to use it. Thanks!

Yeah, but you can also rent them from the college, so I'm not sure if it's worth buying one.
That's good to know thanks!
