Erm, isnt it a cross between them both... like brazil?

I'd say its closer to a LEDC country but becoming (like brazil) a MEDC

Isn't it a NIC? Newly Industrialised Country? One of the newly emerging south asians tigers? Which means it is in transition, if i am remebering higher geography correctly....

Duh! Yeah, of course it is. Thanks very much!

what? Singapore? Of course it is not a LEDC
u put South Korea, Japan, and SIngapore together (is just like Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan Province of China)

Well its about 3 in the demographic transion model so its about half way i think you wouldnt go wrong saying either has long as you gave a suitbale reason for your choice.

Ok thanks, I'm just using it as one of my case studies, and it's a bit confusing as to where it fits in.

But say if a question came up that said 'for an MEDC you have studied' or 'for an LEDC you have studied', what should I do? Use Singapore for neither?

Well I was using Singapore for a case study as how spontaneous settlements have been improved so I guess a question such as 'using a named LEDC, explain how the gov has tried to improve living standards' or something, but if Singapore isn't an LEDC, this doesn't really work!

Yeah it's the new PC term for 'shanty towns' or 'squatter settlements', we're not allowed to call them that any more don't you know!

Singapore has all the characterisitics of an MEDC although it stands below the Brandt Line. This however indicates it's status as a NIC (newly industrialised country) which has grown recently due to strict control and employment specialising in highly skilled areas.

In an exam situation, depending on the question Singapore could be used as an MEDC or an LEDC depending on which aspect you wish to examine. However in most cases Singapore would be appropriate for an MEDC with the concept plan nearing completion this year.

In terms of GDP you can compare Singapore with the UK, and see that there is only a slight difference. However bear in mind the high wage prices in Singapore mean that many new businesses (especially construction) can only provide workers with very poor conditions. So in this respect more of a LEDC.

It depends on the question but I am sure you'll be able to make the correct judgement in the exam.

I hope this helps.

They have different names in different areas:

Favelas in Rio de Janeiro

Bustees in Calcutta

Pueblos Jovenes in Lima

Ranchos in Caracas

If it is not one of these you want, you'll have to do a search to find out.
