I may just have volunteered for Queens Ergs without ever having rowed before. Ever. They were pretty desperate for girls though...

I might die

YAY YOU'LL SEE ME :p:
Nah, you won't die, we've only done 2 (very short) erg sessions, and it only lasts 2 minutes anyway

AND MEEEEEEEEEEEE! I'm in our W1 team (although that might be our only team at the moment, because a couple of W2ers can't come, but HOPEFULLY we'll get 2 teams together..)
EEE EXCITED!

...it's going to be horrific though :pinch:

just think of the free t-shirt :o:

Also, I just found out my friend got hit by a lorry in Austria :eek4: she's got stitches, and her whole leg in plaster. Don't know what she's going to do for the next few months, as she cycles to and from work every day... god I hope she's ok :frown:

Izzy. You will without a doubt be better than me  I HAVE NEVER ROWED BEFORE! I'll say hi to you if I see you though
What time are you guys there?

We're rowing at 8:30, and there from 7:45  you?

That's a lot earlier! It's lucky that mine's later though- I have a chemistry practical tomorrow, so there's no way I could have done it that early.

Apparently if we get through to the final, it's at 10pm though :s-smilie: that's insanely late! It's going to kill any chance of getting work done that whole evening if we do...

Hmmm this physics is so not inspiring me right now... I might just give up and head to the bar... :p:

Get someone to show you how to safely row on an erg though. You can damage your back easily if you do it wrong!

Really? Could you also aggravate a knee injury? Or is that less of an issue?

Knee injury probably less so. It's more that novices using an erg (and most gym rowers who haven't been taught) tend to use their back far too much rather than using their legs, resulting in possible injury.

Yes. You really need a 10 min induction first on how to do it properly, and you also need to remember it's not worth killing yourself for. I won a bottle of champagne in a women's freshers erg sprint for the best time, not because I slaughtered myself, but because my bf had taught me some technique before I started, and therefore a lot more efficient.

Hmm, I probably won't do it then - my knees are screwed up enough as it is. Thanks.

PS: There's a (small) chance I might be doing Queens' Ergs myself tonight, due to dropouts in (novice) M2. If I do then it'll be worth seeing just so you can say you witnessed the worst ever individual performance in Pembroke history.

You can join me as the worst in Downing's history

Eek! I'll definitely make sure I do, thanks
I DIDN'T DIE  and actually had a good time
Not enough to convince me to row though... good luck everyone else

Its Emma Sprints in a week and a half :p:
Time in Cambridge is weird..each day seems like its really long, but then its November 9th already..

...I haven't heard a thing about Emma sprints  guess our LBCs are a bit unorganised :p:

Fun? Most of the guys who do it properly have to be dragged off the erg or collapse of it  not as bad as 2ks though

Yeahhhh, when I did my time trial my first thought after I got off was "I am going to throw up or faint right now" hence the slight trepidation about this evening....
BUT IT'LL BE GREAT

I just came back from Queens' Ergs (with the T-shirt to prove it!) and it was surprisingly fun. :h:

Yay! How did you do?!

Join a town club! We only row in the evenings (yes we go out at night!) and weekends. The earliest the men get out on the water is 10:30am.

That's really tempting, actually. Would also be nice to escape a little, so something I'll look at once my workload settles back to levels I can actually manage. Thanks! I guess I kind of assumed students would be shunned a bit.

Haha yeah. Want to share your time? :p: To be fair you get a free t-shirt and if you go out after you'll probably have a cheaper evening, with alcohol having a greater effect due to being exhausted.

When you have time/ inclination, give me a pm. Students aren't shunned, its just that you're not allowed to do both because town clubs can go out at times the colleges can't so most people choose their college.

Are you a second year compsci? :ninja:Haha, the latter :p: I'm just amazed they can take something that's been a fairly well-solved problem for years and manage to screw it up so badly.

I was wondering if you would clock this if I posted :sigh:
How awkward. I don't know who you are...don't think I know any queens compscis.

Also, get an XMPP client, that works great.

Do town clubs have a BCD equivalent? :holmes:

Would anyone like to enlighten me as to what an erg (or ergs) is? I walked back in to college this evening with a sign saying Queens' Ergs and was rather confused :s-smilie: I assume it's some sort of rowing thing?

An erg is just a rowing machine, that you'd find in most gyms.

Ergometer. Rowing machine. QErgs is essentially an indoor rowing relay race.
