Ditting Suck
Grrrrr....not a good outing. Two people *still* out of comission so rowed with two subs.

Race pace of 39-40 sounds FAST for boys, FTB?

Yup.

Although that's only really for the first minute, we'll drop down to 38 after that, probably!

Hit 42 out of the winds, though, and that was quite exciting.

If (hideously unlikely) we get blades, then I can choose to have either a mounted rudder or an actual blade. I think I'd go for both, really...

If our boat rowed that fast, we'd end up hitting each other with our blades and generally looking like a disgrace. For us, much better to keep the rating (slightly) lower and put some real power down!

ok so i guess my predictions for the first division (M1):

FaT
Jesus
Caius/LMBC (not sure if lmbc will catch caius)
Emma
Downing
Clare
Pembroke

I'm out of predictions now - the last few are just guesses. Oh and I'm assuming that Caius will at least be a bit better than their recent performances suggest!

I would be highly surprised if your boat was to go over the course at 38. In all probability your crew would be dead after about a couple of minutes; just basing this from seeing you guys on the river - your crew don't look *that* fit. Plus if your still rating that high when people get tired it could become a bit of a mess. We're only planning to wind to about 40 and then drop down to 34ish. It's not all about rating, it's putting the power down effectively

....although being in div 3 I would imagine that it's highly unlikely you will row over, seen as though carnage usually ensues before then!

These are good points, but I can assure you that there are race plans and so on considering all this... not that I'll reveal them, though, you never know who might be reading this :ninja: :p: To be fair, race pace for the first minute or so will probably be high at 38+. It's just the adrenaline, I suppose, and I will be riding on them to keep efficiency, and will doubtlessly drop down.

In terms of fitness, though, whilst they aren't the fittest boat on the river, 2k at rate 36 is achievable. We managed all of Head of the Nene rating above 33, with the first third at 35-6, and combined with the adrenaline of bumps keeping high power and efficient rowing (which has come on over the past week a huge amount) shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Which can be compared to Clare Hall M1 who plan to do bumps at rate 27 or so...

In other news, how much have Caius stacked their first boat? I've been hearing rumours and all kinds of gossip about what they could do and the people they have available, have they changed anything yet?

Most "OK" crews should be able to come out of the wind in the high 30's. The problem I've found is what to do next: If you keep pushing this rate, only the very best college crew can hold on to the correct ratio, so inevitabley things will start feeling crap. When I stroked last year, I would rarely force a rate, but this obviously cost us on the last day where we were just left behind the crew we were chasing.

I still don't really know what to do with the rate in bumps: gunning it at the start always happens. But then if you keep the rate high, I find it's often a make or break decision - you're gonna be getting close to the bump, or in about 2 minutes time your crew are going to die and you could even risk being bumped later on. But settling on to a good steady rhythm generally sets you up for a very consistent row - and hopefully you slowly wind the boat ahead of you in, and you generally wont have to worry about the boat behind you (unless they are genuinely a lot better than you).

lol, I have no idea what i'm saying here. Reality is, I don't think I've mastered the correct bumps technique yet, I'm far more of a fixed distance rowing type of rower.

But I'll be listening in on the results with eagerness. As long as Emma finish within 4 bumsp fo the headship I'll be happy.
Hmm, I suppose it really does depend on the circumstances. If we have a good start and Caius ahead of us don't and we gain, I'm going to go for it, else drop it down. Sounds sensible.

I've also managed to get 2 weeks to do the next essay, rather than the normal week, so stress over work isn't so much of a problem

First day of Mays last year we were so pumped on adrenaline we came out of the start at 40, dropped it to 38 after first post, and then bumped (going off 3rd, so really not very far at all to maintain that for!). Our cox was so amazed that she never even said the rate to us until after. But it was spacky, for all the speed we had, and if we hadn't bumped so early, we'd have been screwed later. This cost us the next day against a slightly stronger crew - we got close but when they pushed off we couldn't nail it. So we had to rethink, calm it down a bit and just keep going and let them come to us. Fortunately, this worked - best bump of my life.

(us holding it up, oh yes )

So basically, aim high, but rate isn't everything.

so excited about bumpage!
our getting on race yesterday felt good, and the crew seemed to respond well when i shouted, 'push for doughnuts'. it's all about the post-race sugar fest.

Woo, another cox!

Doughnuts and cake is important. I can throughly recommend getting Chocolate indulgence cake from the Co-Op on Chesterton Lane or whatever the big road is called behind the boathouses- £2.00 each so £4 to feed an entire crew pluc coach and bank party. Bargain!

dont get too excited. In my experience those who are enter bumps with high hopes of doing well are all too often disappointed. It's all too easy for things to not go as well as they could of and you end up missing the bump you really should have been able to get!

I can't really tell for sure from my vantage point here in America. They lost Don this year, who is without a doubt one of the finest coaches I have ever worked with. But then again, the past couple of years they've always shown huge promise coming in to bumps and then somehow disappointed slightly on the day. (e.g. the infamous ejector crab of 04, which I was so lucky to be a witness of, and then helped us bump clare back on the re-row). They're going to fast, I'm sure of that, and I have no doubt they'll push hard at First and Third. But recent results suggest that FaT are a strong crew themselves, and I can imagine that once they get the headship after the first day, they aren't going to be letting it go without a fight. And jesus will have been busy on the first two days getting their bumps, so FaT will already have had a day to get used to the conditions at the head of the river - and I can imagine that things feel pretty comfy from that vantage point.

To take the headship from a crew you need a chasing crew which is markedly better than the headship crew. That is obviously the case with FaT vs Caius this year. Last year, FaT looked at least as good as Caius, if not a smidge better. But it wasn't nearly enough to get the headship.

But then again, Jesus are a bunch of monsters and so I wouldn't be too suprised if they did chase down FaT. But my money is still on FaT to hold on to it.

just my two cents.

Isn't that more to do with there not being a 'correct' bumps technique? It depends who's in front of you, who's behind you, the conditions, etc.. Different things will work on different days.

(I'm guessing, I've never rowed bumps before...)

Wooo! At last, two days before bumps and it all comes good. Today's outing was really good, we got away well from the practice starts, the boat was sat all the way through our pieces and we nailed the corners. One more outing tomorrow morning, and then let bumps begin! (although I'm not looking forward to the nerves at the start, or the immense pain which I'll be experiencing by the time we get to the Plough :frown: )
I'd just like to apologise to Catz M2 on behalf of FaT M5 for embarrasing you all like that.

They asked for a practice race against us thinking we were M3 or something, from Ditton to the Railway Bridge. We gained about two lengths on them. Quite a confidence booster, considering they're halfway up Division 3 and we're about a third of the way from the bottom of Division 4, although apparently every single one of their boats spooned last year...

FaT M1 were looking HOT today. If they get the headship, Jesus will have to do something AMAZING to take it off them.

In other news, I'm actually going to die on the first day.

I can assure you that your M4 will be the ones who will be humilated on Tuesday. Heads on pikes and all. We will not be getting spoons this year.

We were actually catching you pretty severely until the damned novice in our boat crabbed. So don't talk about being emabarrassed eh?
