Our new president seems to maintaining radio silence at the moment.

Yes, although they have a pool of quite decent rowers, so if we actually have enough time together could be potentially quite good. I don't want to do hardcore rowing this term, so I wouldn't be going for a high boat for Clare either. Either way, finding time to train would be interesting...

You know, if you got TWO blades you could make a nice cross on your wall...
Hmmmm....our boat club captain sent out final Mays crew lists. So maybe we're not having 2ks...

I've quit rowing for this term since my degree is in serious jeopardy. The decision was also made in view of the ridiculous training schedule.
My exams finish on the exact day that bumps start.

Bloody alcohol ban. :frown:

you'll regret not taking part in mays though. But if your degree is suffering that much, then fair enough!

I'm still trying to decide when to come back to Cambridge. The choice is between the end of may (the actual month) or just before may week. If I came back at the end of may I'd probably want to do some rowing of sorts, but I'd probably be kind of annoyed if I couldn't row at the level I wanted to. So part of me just wants to come back later. But I'm also trying to decide what to do rowing wise for next year - should I trial again or not? Part of me wants to try for emma boat club captain.

Exams and Mays overlap for me!

In other news, I like coxing my town boat and "breaking" CUCBC rules- they don't apply to town clubs. Like, for example, going firm pressure below Chesterton which the Caius M1 couldn't follow.

I'll resume being a rowing and fit freak once exams finish. I have to sacrifice something... :s-smilie:

Aww no. Well, when you finish, we have a wine box and some of the others will bring plenty of bottles to keep it company, so you're welcome to come over and share.

Looks like I wouldn't even be rowing even if I was active. There aren't enough rowers for three boats, so it looks like I'd be one of the ones just left to rot in the reserves...

My Mays crew from last year (and Tit Hall and Queens') are featured in next year's Cambridge calendar. I was being nosy in Borders and spotted us! Crazy Japanese tourists are going to have my picture on their wall! How cool?!?
Ermmm.....congratulations?
Right. Lookng for people (possibly Willa?) to help me out.

I've just got the email forwarded from our Captain re. CULRC Summer DevSquad. I'm keen to get on it, but there're a couple of things I need to know:

1 - re. 2k times - the last 2k I did was at the beginning of Lent term (and was 06:59.6). Do I just put this on the form, and say when I did it? Do I try and do another one? (the issue with that is other people won't be doing it at the same time so I'll likely not do very well)
2 - it also asks for a 30 min time. Now, these always seem to turn out a bit rubbish for me. My last one was 2:03.0, r. 18 - is that respectable enough to put down? (it suggests r.21 in the email)
3 - what is a respectable time for a 250m sprint? I've NEVER done one!
4 - can anyone tell me anything about the DevSquad? Is it fun/worthwhile/etc.?

Thanks in advance!

I would have thought a schoolgirl calendar would be more to their tastes... but congrats!

I'm from the dark blue side, but just clicked on the thread. The ex-lightweight rower in my room says:

Best 2K was 6.24 (slowest 6.44)
Best 30minute was 1.46 (no idea about range)
250m sprint ~50s. & laughed at the idea that they wanted to know that (?)

50s is probably a bit slow. That equates to 1min 40sec for 500m, which I'm sure Ditting Suck could easily beat. And 250m is more of a sprint than 500m anyway so it should be a bit faster.

I reckon I could it in 45secs, but haven't tried! It seems a bit pointless!

dont listen to the horrible dark blue scum! My answers are as follows:

1. put down that 2k time you did (what is your weight? - it will help me judge if it's a good 2k time). I wouldn't bother doing another 2k time unless they didnt accept you on to the dev squad, then you can do it and show you're committed.
2. Put the rate 18 result, and say that you havent really done a proper 30 minute piece.
3. Just go to the boathouse and do a 250m sprint and find out...it's less than a minute, so go nuts!
4. The dev squad has been evolving over the past few years. If I had won the presidential election this year, I would possibly have completely overhauled it. However, I didn't win (being out of the country never helps with these things), and I get the impression that the new president isn't going to change things that much. Basically the main thing you'll get out of the dev squad is the regatta which you enter at the end of the 3/4 weeks - CULRC boats usually win the categories they enter in that particular regatta, so it's good fun to go out and beat some people! It's definitely something to do though if you want to trial...are you going to trial next year?

any other specific questions, PM me....don't want the dark blue people poking their noses around.
Thanks all for your replies

Elles, I'm aware what lightweight Blues pull, but that's during/after trialling. I want to know what times prospective rowers have pre-trialling. Thanks anyway though!

Willa: I'm just under 78kg at the last count.

Thanks

I asked about pre-trialling. But he said would very much depend on where you are at the moment (e.g. how close to weight/previous experience) as to how close your performance should be to BB - so wasn't really enough info to give a more specific range of 'respectable'.

Oh, rumbled. I'm just desperate to find out that secret "winning" formula... :p:
