I'm going to a Selwyn boatie BBQ tomorrow
Can't believe i'm rowing this term - not exactly sure how it happened, but have just come back from a lovely outing - beautiful weather! And there seemed to be lots of happy smiley freshers out in tubs looking vaguely scared/bemused... excellent. (except for the 4 huge cruiser boat things that wanted to come though the multitude of floating things... hmmph...)

I almost decapitated someone today. Excellent.
I tried rowing for the first and last time yesterday. Hated it.

It wasn't us . James didn't move the Duck up to Clayhithe til about 6. Unfortunately its pretty impossible to avoid coming into contact with novice rowers if we do any boating at all this time of year!
I don't think i would have an issue will a narrow boat - apart from anything else, they're quite narrow! (except the huge barge thing...). They were just pleasure cruiser things which took up altogether too much room, two of them were on the wrong side of the river, and they towered over us rather alot...

Are you actually moored permantently in cambridge, or just for weekends/short times? I thought you were outside of cambridge, but then you mention Jesus lock...

Yeah, that was probably Battleship Bob (huge grey widebeam). He was on the move yesterday. We have a permanent mooring at Upware, 10 miles north of Cambridge, and bloody miles from anywhere (45 minutes by bike to nearest bus stop!) so we move a lot. We spend at least half the week below Jesus Lock and at Clayhithe, on the visitors moorings. Come see us sometime!

Just been tubbing. I really enjoyed it, was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

Just done my first coaching session, they were surprisingly competent

I'm rowing again! My knee is fixed! I would be over the moon, except my coach seems to think all we need to do this term is hideously long ergs...
Reply 951
Preparation for the hell of Fairbairn's, same for us
Reply 952
Anyone know how long novice erg sessions normally last?

Mine was about an hour on Sunday. They just make you break down the technique slowly - arms, back, legs, legs, back, arms, back... :p:
Sculling is horrible - I chipped a piece of flesh off my left index finger knuckle trying to get the stupid hang of it. I'm hoping one oar is much easier.

you probably won't be doing anything much in the form of continuous erging, so it doesn't really matter.
As a novice i'm not sure we ever did more than about 30-40 mins erging at once... Which beats this mornings 7am hour and a bit...

Just moi - it was in one of those yellow starter ones which supposedly are 'impossible' to tip over, haha. My college has some sort of arrangement with the CRA.

Went out in a VIII for the first time earlier. It was less stable than I had hoped. Went ok though, apart from a slight encounter with a tree on a bank...
It will feel horrible for the first few weeks (or perhaps even longer if you're unlucky!), but when you get it right it feels so cool!
