Anyone else get completely soaked this morning? Well, that was fun...
Yup, rain... yeugh... although, it wasn't helped by the fact that our coach issued a rely stupid instruction that left most of us in the Cam and our boat capsized full of water...... oops...

I'm intrigued to know what that instruction was...

I seem to have been moved from bow to 6. Is this good/bad?

Good. Bow gets soaked all the time by backsplash. Though if you're novices, there may be as much splash forward as back. Also bow is the first person to hit stuff so most likely to eject (always something to consider with novices).

However, bow is normally meant to be the most technically good rower and also, usually, the shortest. 5+6 are the powerhouse of the boat though.

It's probably good. Presumably they think you've got good rhythm and are one of the slightly bigger/stronger guys in the boat
I row at 6; i like it... good place to be. As a novice, i doubt it'll make much difference to you unless you're asked to stroke - stroking isn't my idea of fun, esp in a novice boat when people have no sense of timing.

I've been thinking that it would be handy if the cox had a little drum, like in Ben Hur. Except without the chains and stuff.

Stroke is the first person in the boat (they would sat at 8 if it were given a number) and so they set the rhythm of the boat. The rest of the boat attempts to match their rhythm. It's quite hard to do, especially if the boat isn't in time - people taking their strokes before you can upset the rhythm and jerks you around - but is quite a fun seat, especially if you've got a fit/chatty cox.

I'm at 4 at the minute, which I quite like just because I get to spend a lot of time rowing if we do rowing in sixes and get to stroke the bow four when we're doing fours.

They should just call the catches and finishes, that'd do the same thing.

You do, of course have 7 sitting behind you, who is convinced that they know better (bowsiders always do) and telling you you're going too fast, too slow, not sitting up... I have been both 7 and stroke and fulfilled all stereotypes. I prefer 7 though.

so... anyone fallen in this term yet? no? just the bow 4 of Caius M1 then. cool.

i am so going to be ill tomorrow. ironically, the boat we were in today is the only one that has shoes that actually fit me, and they don't have a safety string thing. so i had to go under to get them off. urghhh. then we carried the boat home. never have a novice cox.

now to do some washing...

If it was anyone but Caius M1, I'd feel sorry for them...

because we were in two fours, lol.
Why did an M1 four have a novice cox? And what did they do that made you fall in??!
Reply 979
because... we had a lot of boats going out, and the lower boats were using those crazy boats that have the cox sitting behind bow, which probably require someone more experienced. and we have a real dearth of coxes. plus we were being coached by a former german international, so we didn't expect anything that bad to happen.

we were going fast straight into a barge, the cox screams "WATCH OUT!!!", we all spin round (and so shift our weight), bow side have their blades forced all the way in, we fall in.
