Hehe, I know what you mean. I guess it could be annoying, but I find americans shouting to be motivational yet lightly amusing.

Its annoying because they seem to be so obviously trying to draw attention to themselves. Or maybe I'm just being uber judgemental.

Did anyone else the vid of the blues boats clashing? I've never had a 'proper' clash of blades but I imagine it must be really difficult to keep rowing.

Seems like Cambridge are well ahead of oxford at the mo, which is good. Amazing that Oxford have a crew full of olympians while we have none yet are better than they are. Just hope it doesn't mean they'll suddenly start working together in the next 3 months and blitz us.

Hmm...I think that Cambs have the advantage of more boatrace experience- Pelly, Ransley, O'Shaugnessy, and Monaghan- could be telling. Further, I'm pretty sure half of the crew already have 'some' international experience, if only at U23.

It will be a close race.

If they're shouting whilst erging then no way are they pulling hard enough.
Someone recently asked me what the difference was between an erg and a rowing machine. I didn't know enough to answer. Is erg a verb and not a noun?

The persons in question didn't erg. They were weight lifting and socialising between sets.

Erg is short for Ergometer which is a rowing machine. Or more generally, an exercise machine that can measure work done. But normally a rowing machine. It's also a verb, but less formally- it is the verb to use a rowing machine.
 *is enlightened*

Thanks
Though, generally speaking if you refer to an 'erg' somewhere other than cambridge, you will confuse people - either because they have no idea what you'e talking about, or because they equate it will many different exercise machines (as above) rather than rowing machines specifically...

Water + cold = frozen lake :frown:

I wonder how well a boat would work as a bobsleigh

Frozen rowing rawks. We were doing it in Peterborough last week. ICEBREAKER! Don't suppose the boat liked it much though.

was at dorney mon-fri. was good. this coming week will entail me fighting like crazy to keep my seat in the first boat. hmm.

We were going to go to dorney, but was told it was frozen, so have spent most of the week on the Cam. Went out in a IV for the first time, which I think I preferred to an VIII once we got it balanced ok.

2k erg test tomorrow. Can't wait... :s-smilie:

saw you in that IV, i think! we were moored at the penny ferry and i was in the warm watching you row past. james says VIIIs are faster, and better :p:

I was out in an VIII for the first time this morning, which was pretty awesome. Not as cold as I though i'd be either, although the water did freeze to the bottom of the boat when we took it out...

Hmm, didn't see you there, but saw your boat moored outside the Fort St George earlier today, I think. I think I prefer IVs because what you're doing makes more of a difference, and it's far more exciting getting it properly balanced.

Yes, was very cold today. Not sure if there was ice on the boat, but there definitely was along the length of the blade shafts. Hmm, what club were you rowing with? We might have passed, actually.

Forgive me if I sound rude, but how are you a boatie and a boatwoman. Aren't narrow-boat people meant to be consumed by the eternal burning hatred of a thousand fiery suns for rowers? Surely doing both would mean you were able to look at the world of river-use from more than one perspective which wouldn't do at all.

I am utterly consumed with self-loathing. :p:

Its interesting to be on both sides of the 'divide' and there are quite a few of us who are. At least we can agree that we all hate the fishermen!
