As expected we got beaten, but we did get to go wading into the river up to our knees, which was an absolute riot. So not all bad. We also managed to get some sympathy cheers from a couple of random girl boats, which wasn't distracting at all.

Where were you sat in your boat Chewwy?

Ah, the one place i pretty much didn't look. I was at 4, vainly trying to give the marshal some chat so she'd sort us out a headstart. She wasn't keen. Did you manage to catch our attempts at pulling into the bank? We're stuck with a cox with absolutely no experience (he's meant to be our coach), which is why it got a bit silly at points.

We had to scratch, ill cox at the last minute.

That's pretty ****! We had a rower go home without telling us at the last minute, so we had to grab someone from M3 that had just raced and put them in our boat.

I've also just realised that it's a fairly bad thing you lost to Maggies II chewwy, they're behind us in bumps (more than a division behind you). So...erm...****. We're desperately trying to avoid spoons, in an attempt to do better than our M2 last year.
Well we lost our race aswell, but by and large only because someone crabbed half way down - otherwise it would have been utterly tied... On the plus side, both the crew behind and infront of us for bumps looked distinctedly catepillar-esque today... so that's a nice...
glad i subbed into that one. Sorry chewwy, but beating caius is fun. Some scary moments in that race.

Been hearing some stories from our first men about Caius M1 being whiny bastards.

They lost to our M1, which is a massive upset in itself, with people tipping Caius to go up, even if Girton are underanked. But then Caius complained to the marshalls because we had a sub not from Girton, and got us disqualified! How shabby is that? (I'm not sure who the sub was, but I know for a fact they had a Pembroke cox, which is even more shabby if they called it on that). It's not as if it's an important race, I mean fair enough if it was in bumps. It's very much sour grapes from where I'm standing.
well, you had the captain of lmbc, and a random sub from darwin iirc. In their own college kit  at least you beat them anyway!

considering it all happened before the race, i don't see what's unreasonable about it. also girton haven't beaten caius in anything else this term, so it's unlikely that if we had been racing properly (instead of knowing we were racing a disqualified crew and had a final coming up) the result would've been the same.

plus the point of these college races is to like, you know, row for your own college...

I didn't know the DQ happened before the race. Would you actually row any less hard in a race? especially when it's side by side. If they were saving themselves it didn't work if they lost to Clare in the final.

I've now heard so many different colleges of where the sub(s) came from. Magdelene was mentioned somewhere, which would make sense as we actually have a grad who was an undergrad at magdelene, so not a non-college sub at all.

According to the Rowing.ucam message boards, Caius rowed pretty hard against Girton. They were just beaten by a stronger crew.

Or, if that's a lie, then saving themselves didn't work either.

James says he's glad he didn't end up racing Girton in the final, because he wouldn't like to go head-to-head with a fellow cox at City!

Caius M1 for spoons again? Here's hoping...

How the mighty have fallen.

Was she coxing today though, I was under the impression M1 had a former blues triallist cox from pembroke subbing in, at least that was the reason why she couldn't sub in for us.

Yay, green flag
I am officially racing in my first ever race, a week today. Pretty exciting.

Good luck!

Also, I assume the CUCBC flag system is just for college clubs. Is there an equivalent for town clubs?

Thanks, and nope. Its up to the individual coxes and coaches. James as water safety officer (now there's a joke in itself!) can impose a ban on the whole club rowing though, which he did for a few days last week.

Just coxed for the first time ever, its a lot more difficult than it looks and pretty uncomfortable. Really fun shouting at people working hard while you're just sat there though.
Yes, coxing is a lot more difficult than it looks, I'm glad someone appreciates that!

Hell's bells - we have the Getting On Race for bumps on friday which I'm dreading; there are 34 crews racing for all of 10 places. I'm not entirely sure why we even have to do it; looking at the list, we're one of the few 2nd boats on there, most are 3rd, 4th and 5th crews. How do they decide who has to do the race, does anyone know?

Also what's the course exactly - I've heard motorway bridge to railway bridge, is that about right?

aah, I know the crew will be really quite pissed if we don't make it to bumps, but in all honesty we haven't a hope in hell; most of the boats we're racing beat us at the newnham short course (although we did have bad luck then - involving a jammed seat and a dropped hankerchief) and our captain's talking about the bumps races like its just a given that we're going to get in.

Also, if we don't qualify for the lent bumps, does that mean we're don't qualify for the may bumps as well?
