Bleh. 2 behind the spoon barge tomorrow, with a boat we're probably even with behind us.

The competence of our women is highly emasculating. I think their two boats have got three times as many bumps as our 5 men's boats...

Well done Andy!

i doubt it. three days of meticulous planning, everything has gone our way, and the double overbump on robinson is now ON.

i jest. today was horrible. sadly it seems some people in my boat cannot row when under pressure. i can't really fault their fitness or motivation, so i kinda have to put this down to coaching. this makes me sad.

though, to be fair, what the hell girton. you didn't even gain on Downing, at all. not helpful.

oh yeah also, please can you not bumps us before we're on the long reach, because my extended family have travelled all the way from canada to watch me race in may bumps, and they will be on the reach.

it cost them thousands upon thousands of pounds.

We were a length off them, and sprinting down the gut. Everyone we race against front loads their race plan because they know we are faster. Downing would have collapsed past grassy, no way they could sustain the pace they were at. We rowed well, if Downing had rowed like they did yesterday we would have had them at first post.

Tell your family to watch from first post tomorrow, or your crew to get twice as good.
If you want a race where the best crew wins, go and row a regatta or something. Bumps isn't fair. Caius M1 will tell you that. Hell, Darwin M1 will probably tell you that too. We don't row bumps because we want to be able to rank ourselves in order of ability at rowing. No-one would assume that bumps position is a particularly good indicator of ability.

The challenges in bumps are pretty unique. Sometimes good crews face near insurmountable obstacles but the unreasonable challenges are part of what makes it so much fun. The excitement of pushing off a crew that's inches from your stern or putting everything into a frantic 500m do-or-die dash is unlike anything in any other sort of rowing event. If you're going to get angry when circumstances conspire to deny you a bump you feel you deserve, I suggest you try something more sedate like head racing. Or knitting. Or go to Oxford and row torpids.

You're absolutely right, up to the last bit where you say you shouldn't get angry. I'm angry cause I care, and because I want to win, and hell, I wanted a chance to get a oar on my wall. I accept that bumps will often do things like this (it's happened to Girton crews quite often recently), it doesn't mean I have to be happy about it when it happens, it means I should motivate myself to work harder for next time. It means I will be annoyed that the boat 2 in front wasn't just a little bit faster, and wish they had been motivated enough, because I wanted to win. I'm not going to throw a tantrum, or pick a fight with members of the opposing crew, so what exactly is wrong with being angry?

Also, it means I need no pep talk or inspiring speech tomorrow, just the memory of today. If you just shrug your shoulders when this stuff happens, I'd say it means you care less. Of course, it's stupid to care about a silly rowing race, so that's not necessarily a bad thing per se. But if you don't care, there's no point putting yourself through the early mornings, the grim ergs, the horrible pain and everything else you put yourself through.
I shall be joining you all in the fun and games tomorrow...I hope to god we manage to bump because there is no way I am fit enough to row over. I will actually die. And then Clare will get fined for me not going back to umpire. Which is definitely sub-optimal.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

But you always had a mountain to climb. It was always there, and to get angry at the mountain is ridiculous. Downing raced their race and got their tactics spot on. Bumps allows that. Getting angry at Caius for being slow is like Caius M1 getting angry at the river for giving them dirty water and FaT clean.

Not getting angry at factors outside your control does not mean caring less. It means retaining some dignity and self control. If I felt I'd personally come up short in a bumps race (either my performance or any lack of preparation), I'd beat myself up about it. When I know I've rowed the best race I could I may be disappointed if the result wasn't the right one but I'm never angry; I'm proud. Because feeling that I've tried my hardest is more important to me than winning an oar. If it wasn't, I'd go and row in a beer boat in M6 division.

And I'd like to think that it's the ergs, the pain and the early mornings that prove I care, not the getting angry at circumstances beyond my control.

yeah, 16th on the river, woo!

sad day for my boat. made a deal with darwin last night, they actually stuck to their half of the deal. we didn't quite.

oh well. i'm men's captain for the club next year, and given our first and second boats will be looking pretty similar in a year's time, i'm hoping to lead us to success (i.e. for one, get head of the river!!)
Well, a slightly confusing but overall satisfying end to my bumps career. I think Sidney III are officially the luckiest crew EVER though.

More both our women's boat's getting blades without too much trouble. I think the men's side has been written off slightly.

(also, objectively, it definitely looks much neater now)
Blaaaaaades  Woo yeah! and back in division one properly where we belong....

Satisfying impact on your stern today, our bowman says their were two collisions and you didn't concede on the first one. I only heard the nice loud crunch when you did concede.

Darwin are an amazing crew, it's just a shame we both had to start 28th and 29th on the river, when clearly we are both top ten speed wise. Just been to a very drunk BCD hearing all the plans to sustain Girton's rise (and stop the decline of the rest of the club).

Good luck on the headship campaign, although I feel today was the big chance and it wasn't quite taken. Any potential Silas' for next year?

yes.
the town has been full of drunken boaties staggering around this evening... aah another interesting bumps; I think its safe to say we were simultaneously the most successful and least successful boat in our college; we bumped twice, none of the other corpus boats bumped at all, but also got overbumped twice, which must be some sort of a record.

Also ironically, because we were overbumped by Anglia Ruskin II on the last day we've finished behind Jesus IV, who we bumped twice in three days.
X Press head tonight :s-smilie: I've not raced since the Winter League. I'm going to die.
