Maths A Level Exam tomorrow! Please help!! Calculus

Please can someone help, in last years paper, there was a question:

Express 5cos(x-60)+3cosx in the form Rsin(x+a)
I got 7sin(x+51.8) which is correct

However after that it asks to give details of transformations to transform y=7sin(x+51.8) to y=sinx
I put - stretch of 1/7 in y-direction and translation of 51.8 in negative x-direction but in mark scheme it says positive x-direction, why is this?:/

Because you are trying to go from the curve y = 7sin(x+51.8) to y=sinx; as it is sin(x+51.8) it means for x to = 0 the x co-ordinate is actually -51.8 in the first place. You are moving from -51.8 to 0 therefore it is the positive x direction. Hope you understand

But in transformation rules they say (x+something) is in negative x direction

Is this different when it comes to sin and cos graphs?

Or is it just different in these questions?

Lets say that y=x+51.8, therefore x = y-51.8
The original graph is now siny but we want sin(y-51.8)
So the translation is in the positive direction

OH WAIT I THINK I GET IT

sinx to sin(x+51.8) is 51.8 units in negative direction

and sin(x+51.8) to sinx is 51.8 in positive direction

its the opposite

Yeah that's what I was trying to say, sorry, I didn't know if you'd have thought about the whole opposite in translations but always keep an eye out for that! Good luck tomorrow, I have the same.
