I've been quiet for a few days because I've only just copped that "John_Gardner" is in fact THE John Gardner and as such I don't want to bite the hand that fed me when I did the BCL some time ago!! I just thought I'd reply to Laura's comment about there being no time for health on the BCL - it's so true, I really felt it was more a test of ability not to get psyched out by really competitive people and/or depressed/anxious as a result of the workload/pressure/claustrophobia...I don't think I did particularly well on any of those elements of the course!
Just to illustrate the point, I remember being quite amused when I saw a poster in my college MCR saying "ARE YOU FEELING DEPRESSED? ANXIOUS? SUICIDAL?"...I remember thinking it was the first time I'd seen anything that made me feel like my health was more important than my marks since my undergrad degree, until I read what the poster went on to say: "If so, please contact the Psychology Department as we need you for DPhil student experiments with new medication"!!! Typical bloody Oxford!! You wouldn't believe how many people were on medication of some sort by the end of that course, however academically brilliant it may be...!
PS - "Neg-repped"?? What?! No offence Professor Gardner but I never expected you to be more up on the lingo than me!!
