I've been quiet for a few days because I've only just copped that "John_Gardner" is in fact THE John Gardner and as such I don't want to bite the hand that fed me when I did the BCL some time ago!! I just thought I'd reply to Laura's comment about there being no time for health on the BCL - it's so true, I really felt it was more a test of ability not to get psyched out by really competitive people and/or depressed/anxious as a result of the workload/pressure/claustrophobia...I don't think I did particularly well on any of those elements of the course!

Just to illustrate the point, I remember being quite amused when I saw a poster in my college MCR saying "ARE YOU FEELING DEPRESSED? ANXIOUS? SUICIDAL?"...I remember thinking it was the first time I'd seen anything that made me feel like my health was more important than my marks since my undergrad degree, until I read what the poster went on to say: "If so, please contact the Psychology Department as we need you for DPhil student experiments with new medication"!!! Typical bloody Oxford!! You wouldn't believe how many people were on medication of some sort by the end of that course, however academically brilliant it may be...!

PS - "Neg-repped"?? What?! No offence Professor Gardner but I never expected you to be more up on the lingo than me!!

Lol, I hope you're ready for a litany of PMs about the BCL.

Don't worry Julia, yes it is definitely the real Prof Gardner and I believe he is relatively open minded. Must be surfing on the the TSR, anyway . I think he mainly surfs on here for the LNAT posts.

I noticed those signs about depression all over and testing out the latest drug. No thanks just incase they are actually detrimental. The BCL can be hard, and like most hard things, you have good weeks and bad weeks. I don't have any tutorials this week and I am quite happy about the prospect of getting various admin and notes tidied up without the pressure of tonnes of reading for them.

I agree like with everything you have to keep calm and even my tutors have said sometimes, not always, it shocks them who comes together and does really well in the end.

You should try Ritalin...

Reply 184

Hahaha I actually laughed at that. Have you seen the South Park episode where they all get ADD (or is it ADHD, can't remember)... that's funny. I know it's not a laughing matter, but that's the first thing I think of when I hear Ritalin.

Reply 185

Oh, i've seen that lol! There are a lot of funny south park episodes. some that are too rude to mention on here i must add!

Laura, about the BCL, how do you actually manage to organise all of your notes to do all the essays to quite a high quality with the time constraints and pressure that is managing to have spare time etc!
sorry if this has been asked before-!

You'll have to excuse me Ethereal, I'm unfamiliar with your posting style. Was that you joining in with my sardonic rejoinder, or was it you being one of the many who criticise me for being less than helpful? (Something which I resent)

Was most certainly this option

My tutor for evidence is not really into tutorial essays and its my main subject at the moment but I think in Trinity things will be tough. It would be better if I knew the titles and tutorial questions in advance but I don't. Most people don't manage things perfectly. You've always got to bear in mind the end product, i.e the examination. That said, I have given up ice hockey this term. We had to practice at 1am. Ok if your not on a taught course and can rearrange your timetable but for something like the BCL it just was impractical. BCL is definitely a commitment, especially given all the available seminars, lectures and tutorials- just attending them takes time, never mind personal study. Its a shame because there are so many good things going on in Oxford. I'd have loved to be an undergrad here.

Reply 191

Why not do the MPhil? I hear its a doss :p:

Reply 192

um a personal study like an Mphil really would catch out my appalling organisational skills

Reply 193

How would it?
I promise I won't tell anyone about your inability to organise your self

Reply 194

Thanks, just the whole TSR knows now, hey? and anyone on the WWW who decides to logon here. Actually I am getting more organised at the minute sorting breaking down topic areas lol.

Reply 195

Ha, ha bickering with one's family during vacations normally distracts the mind from study.

Well as you raised the issue - maybe someone would be good enough to explain why they positive-repped me only to make a brief 'oddball' comment about JG in my "leave a comment" box.... :s-smilie:

Very strange use of the rep system if you ask me...

Never trust the rep system. I got 2 really strange random reps which, whilst far from being a direct abuse of the system, almost implied they were actually from JG and now I've got subs again from some riches I know they were not. :tsr2: Subs reveal a lot of general randomness and sneaky covert exchanges:wink:

Reply 197

What the deuce are 'subs' and 'riches'? Tey more immature features of the board?

Reply 198

You earn riches on the TSR which you can then purchase a subscription with. My friend earnt some riches and donated them to me. I am awfully glad because I wanted to put my finger on where that strange rep came from. By implication it was like JG and the English was good which made it seem like him but it was a bit 'jokey' and 'informal' to be written by a professor who teaches me in seminars sometimes

Riches? Are these free?

And here's me paying for subs...
