Accommodation

Okay i browsed through some previous threads and couldn't really find much info about general Accommodation. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what is what and where is good etc!

I went to the open day and really loved the place so now thinking about the accommodation situation, we didn't have a chance to look at this!

I would be studying in the Avenue Campus so ideally want something that is near to that! I am not really into the whole party scene as i've had a gap year already and therefore exhausted the novelty of it all so wouldn't want to be in the party halls or the one where everyone gets in totally bladdered gone 5AM. However, i don't want something that's going to be like a ghost town as i am sociable! I'm also quite interested in joining a gym so would want access to this to!

Any advice on where would be good or places i should avoid?! I would also be going for En Suite - lol very important!!

Thankyou all!

Right, first of all: http://www.accommodation.soton.ac.uk/university/undergraduates.html

You can click on each one to view a small description of each hall.

If you want gym, I'd recommend Glen Eyre, as that is in walking distance of the university campus and sports hall. However, it is the most popular halls complex and therefore you pay a premium. The en suite rooms are £99 a week whereas, for en suite, I only pay £90 down here in Romero (a bus ride from the campus but I've often been swimming/to the gym, there are plenty of buses)

Highfield Hall (closest hall to Avenue Campus and Highfield Campus) has some en suite room but that is catered.

Anyway, have a look at that website and in the book the uni should send you and then if you have any more specific questions I/the rest of us will try and asnwer them!

Hmm, try to make sure you dont end up at Wessex lane cos it would take u an absolute age to walk to avenue. there are buses, but its always nice to be able to have the freedom to walk places. i live at glen and my flatmate is at avenue. she says it takes her approx 30 mins, and shes only got little legs. again, there r buses, but only 2 an hr! highfield halls are definately the most convenient for avenue- literally a few mins walk.
as for the whole 'party halls' thing, each hall has a certain amount of that. its probably just cos glen and wessex are much bigger they have that reputation. i believe highfield halls are jus one, possibly two buildings so theres a lot more of a close atmosphere- theres only a couple hundred people there as well.
glen is absolutely massive. theres soo many different buildings, some small with about 20 rooms in and some much larger with 4 floors and over a hundred rooms. my block is really quiet cos iv ended up in a block of postgrads. we'r all freshers on the 3rd floor but below and above us are post grads who dont go out much. i think in every hall in every flat ur going to end up with some people who like to go out more than others, ur not xpected to at al.
its mostly in freshers week when parties are held every night, but after that halls events become much less frequent- like one a month and are usualyl held in the hall bar so it wouldn disturb u anyway!
hope thats helped

The best halls for bus access are Romero and Gateley. 6 an hour during the week and 4 at the weekends, last bus back to those halls from highfield campus is 11.30pm but after that there's the safety bus (cost: £1).

Most of Glen looks pretty nice. There is a lot of different kind of halls in the Glen Eyre complex so check out the accommodation website.

Monte 2 is in Wessex Lane and IMHO it generally sucks. Silly location to choose.

I recommend having one of the Small Halls as a back up choice (you pick 4 or 5 I think) because Glen is very popular.

I applied to glen last year and didnt get it, like most of the people in my flat purely because so many people apply there! I was gutted when i found out i had wessex lane, but absolutely love it there now! theres so many people at monte and there is so much always going on! The walking isn't that bad, one of my flatmates is at avenue and walks everyday! The bar is great and theres always random events on in there! Ali buger is the burger bar outside the bar and its awesome! oh i love monte! theres also a small gym over the road at connaught which you can use. Wessex is about £10 cheaper than glen a week I think which is pretty good and buses run from there all the time! hope this helps! em x
Hi, I live in Highfield halls, which is the nearest halls to Avenue campus so you might be interested in staying here.

We're a small halls - only about 200 people, and the en-suite rooms are in a seperate building to the rest of the halls. We have a fairly big party scene; there's always loads of people coming home pissed off their heads from a night at Jesters , but similarly there are plenty of people who aren't like that - it's pretty much the same mix wherever you stay at uni.

We're also part-catered. If you're lazy or just a bad chef this is a godsend . It's great to just roll into halls after a long day and have dinner without bothering to cook it. The food is amicable, but the head chef is a bit dotty.

We don't have a gym but we're also the nearest halls of residence to the south of Highfield campus, which is where the gym is . Membership is only £80 a year, which is obscenely cheap. The gym is quite nice with plenty of machines, but the only thing I can compare it with is the local gym near my home, and I have to say it's not as nice, but it does the job at about 1/10 the price

If you have any questions about highfield hall just ask me, preferably not at 2am so my post isn't as blurred as this one

Cheers,
Zac.

Thanks for all the advice
You say wessex lane is like a 15 min walk away from the avenue campus, i think studying geog most if not all of my lectures would be at the highfield campus, and if its only a 15 min walk, i would be ok, and in poor weather i thinkg id be ok on the bus  The one thing which puts me off from glen eyre, is the extra £10 a week, i dont think id be able to afford it :s:
And thanks again for the advice

*Sticks up for Wessex Lane*

I'm in Monte 4 atm (no, not the "posh" ones, just the newer ones) and I'm based at Highfield and go down to Avenue twice a week (and 3 times next semester I think...). Ok, so it sucks that there's no direct bus to Avenue from here, but 10/15mins doesn't really kill...besides most people cycle down there, thinking about bringing up the bike myself, but yes.

Tbh, anywhere you go, there's bound to be a noisy lot, so can't really avoid it...

Besides that, buses are frequent and if you fancy the walking scene, it's 20mins walk to Highfield, adds a bit of exercise to the day. Oooh, and I forgot about the Boiler House (our very own bar), if you ever fancied socialising with others

Any other qus re. Wessex Lane, I'd be happy to answer them.

the accom totaly depends on what sort of person you are. archers road has the benefit of being closer to the town and cheaper, but the other halls have bigger rooms, better facilities and are closer to the main campus, so if you dont go out too much glen eyre is probably best, as its much more comfortable living.
Oooh gotta big up Glen Eyre! I'm in Hartley Grove - or Hartley Hilton as it's known  Ridiculously massive rooms with ensuite, £97 a week. You can get cheaper than that in Glen though, I think where I am is most expensive. Beautiful surroundings; quiet residential area with loads of trees and buses right outside the door practically  5 minute walk from Campus too.

And it's not true at all that Glen Eyre is best for people who don't go out. One of my flatmates is quiet as a mouse but the craziest party animal I know is a Glen. It's got all sorts of people basically - don't forget that Glen Eyre alone houses more than 2000 students. Even if you don't fancy a night out on the town it's still got all the Glen bars.

Oh I forgot - the new halls in Glen have double beds
Talya, you snob! haha Im in Monte 1, every single week you have to pay £30 more than i do! Thats right you pay 90 i pay 60 and monte one is great. 20 people to a floor means there are always freinds around any time of the day. my freind at Glen eyre is paying £90 a week, its still self catered and shared bathrooms, the place is done up really nicely but she is paying an extra £30 a week and her room is ocnsiderably smaller than mine!

Monte one is cheap because its old, but its a really great place to live, the exterior shows its age but inside everything is fine, because its been refurbished, its not a 5 star suit but its comfortable to live in.

Apparently you have crap bathrooms at Monte as well :p:

Whats crap? At glen it looked like a show house, the bathroom was done up like the bathroom in a luxury apartment. In monte, its more basic, it may not look fancy but other then asthetic appeal what else are you getting out of it? We have power showers aswell and no the water in your taps isnt any diffrent to ours, we just get it for a lot cheaper.

I dont know about your place but the knewe accomodation i think the newer onte blocks included have an electriciy top up, basicaly you have to pay for it yourself! Well monte one being old means it doesnt have meters in each room so not only is it the cheapest halls, electricity comes included, we have the same things in our kitchen as in yours, we also have internet connection in every room, all i can see is that we get a bigger room and the same facilities at a much much lower price, just because it doesnt look as fancy.

No meters for me, en suite and £10 less than Glen.

Romero FTW!
I have to say (as a Romero resident) i couldn't be happier. I originally applied to Glen along with a few others (i didn't put Romero down as i didn't know it existed) but it is fabulous! It's as near to town as you can get (including Asda which is the only real supermarket around here), has buses running regularly past the avenue and it is near to avenue campus too! Romero and Gately get severely overlooked i believe!
