how much food money do you lot live off then?

I dunno.. I spend £30 at Asda every 2 weeks and roughly £3 a day on lunch.

I spend less than £20 a week at asda. and i occassionally buy food at the uni- like crisps or a baguette. so £30 a week food would easily cover u.

IS it possible to have my boyfriend staying in the room with me when he visits? the accomodation i chose is either glen eyre , monte3 or monte4. Is it that difficult to have him stay with me especially on the week between 23rd 30th sept where international students can join in for a welcome program. I would appreciate your views/experiences. Thanks loads

What do you mean by difficult?

No one really cares  (Unless you have annoying flatmates who tell on you)

by difficult i meant that the accomodation wardens won't let you because thats what there's written on the website :s-smilie: do they check on you or something? and are they always watching? cuz i imagine them all day like soldiers in the front door lol checking who is going in and out

They have not ever checked as long as I've been there. Plus Glen and Wessex are so huge they can't monitor everyone coming in and out...
ur so allowed people to stay- happens al the time. how ridiculous of them to think they could ever stop it- its not a boarding school. i think they put that cos they dnt want people taking advantage and basically sharing a room!
in glen theres maybe one or two security guards on duty and they wander round the whole complex including chamberlain over the other side of the rd. they'r only there to protect u and wouldnt bat an eyelid to people going home together. theres absolutely no1 at the doors either!

ok thanks a lot for your replies  i can put my mind at rest now and focus on studies :s-smilie: thanks  when do you start exams in the UK ? I am going to start end of april
Hello, everyone!

I've accepted Southampton as my firm choice, received my student ID number, so right now I'm applying out accommodation.

I'll probably be studying a Mathematical related field. I'm not too bothered with walking/cycling to the campus everyday as long as it's no further than about 20 minutes. I'd prefer an ensuite room. As for catering options, I'm really quite puzzled. Would it cost the same to just go out whenever I want to eat? How's the catered food?

I've got my eyes on Glen Eyre Halls self-catered (as does everybody it seems ). What about Glen Eyre Halls catered (Chamberlain)? I think I read previously in the thread about someone having an awful experience involving a offensive stench there. :s-smilie:

Also, any comments to make on Small Halls catered?

Thanks
Jeremy

Small Halls catered = Highfield Hall?

My friends enjoy living there but I have heard bad rumours about the quality of the food and you have to move out during the Christmas and Easter vacations (ie: take all your stuff out!)

None of the halls are more than a 20 min cycle from campus.

I'm ensuite self catering in Romero on Archers Road and I would recommend it but some people absolutely hate the idea of the small halls!

I've been to Hartley Grove in Glen Eyre and they had nice rooms with big bathrooms.
Yeah, I believe it is. I'm afraid the only names I know are the ones listed on the accommodation website.

Oooh, thought up another question! How many foreign students does Southampton generally get each year? And where are they from mostly? Just out of curiousity.

Thanks for the reply!

There's a Swedish girl in my halls flat and there is an International Students society which has socials and trips and things
Theres loads of international students in Maths! I'd say almost 50/50! they'r mostly asian and don't seem to mix with the rest of us which is a little sad cos i dnt think there should be such a segregation!

sweedish girl? that Emilia? =)

totally depends what kind of halls you want. From what i know Hartley is perfect (you can get your work done if needs be, but party-hard on the good nights all the same) South Hill can get messy.. Highfield halls has a lot of smokers (or at least this year) and the people are often out in the hallways up until the early mornings.. really pretty halls though.

No idea what the nightlife at monte or Archers is like

Chamberlain are CRAZY
Glen Eyre seem pretty civil and conscientious.. again.. this is just from impressions i get.

I'm in hartley meself

I'm getting confused, because on the online application you can't actually pick a specific hall. You can only pick 'Glen Eyre Complex' or 2 others, not actually specific halls like Aubrey Hall for example. Is this right? When do we decide which specific hall we want to go to? :s-smilie:

you cant.. they'll choose for you. Basically your other options slim it down.. self catered glen eyre non smoking en suite limits it to about 2/3 halls for example. They send you an offer and then you can choose to accept the place or ask for a different hall.

they're pretty good and guessing where you'll fit in though. i don't know anyone who hates their halls! x

Ahhh now I get how it works. The thing is, it says I have to pick at least 3 differenct options. But the 3rd one doesn't let me pick catered as I've picked catered twice before above, so I'm worried they'll offer me a self-catered hall. Guess I'll just have to risk it. :s-smilie:

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think they are obliged to give you a second offer if you didn't like the first. Sorry!
