Become the managing partner of a massive US firm or be a top barrister doing the very best work in London. By that I most certainly do not mean criminal... unless you are defending realy rich people only. I mean doing top commercial work.

I'd agree with Lewisy-boy and say commercial law is the most lucrative area to practice in.

Reply 3

commercial tax law. no questions (i think lol) anything but criminal.

Commercial. The average wage of the top 2000 barristers at the top 30 sets is £357,000 p.a.

That said, I know a QMUL educated QC who works in criminal law and has just purchased a house/manor for about 2 million. So it's not like criminal barristers are criminally (HAHAHA) underpaid and always skint.

eh?

Compare the top of the tax tree with the top of the corporate tree...

Reply 10

Oh definitely tax, so my personal tax course comes in v.handy, failing that corporate insolvency will do.

What does a commercial barrister do? As in vs. a commercial law solicitor?

Reply 12

Corporate lawyers as a whole average a better wedge than tax lawyers. However, top tax barristers earn way beyond any corporate solicitors.

The highest paid investment banker is also a tax specialist, works at Barclays Capital and earned about 40 million last year!

In other words, tax may be dull but it pays to learn it.

No they dont.

Again - no. There are a large number of bankers on more than 40m a year.

Tax is NOT the most lucrative area of the law.

Compare the top salary at Watchtel to the top salary at a tax set.

Commercial law. Simple.

But seriously, how much do you want?

IMO i would be OK with at least £100,000+ in the long term. I understand its not easy in the first few years of the career to get that. I aim to study law, but would it be 'easier' training and being a solicitor and make atleast £100,000+ after a few years, or would it be 'easier' by becoming a barrister. But after tax, that £100,000 wont seem that much, so i guess £100,000 i would liek to be a minimum

No really, well I am going to take your word for it. It is a good job because it is actually really boring. I thought that with it playing such a critical role in society, studying it might be rather interesting. I was wrong. It never fails to amaze me how much it makes me yawn at times. Corporate Insolvency, on the other hand, is technical but I find it really interesting.

Come on, you've gotta be realistic! That's like saying "Well, I suppose Jennifer Aniston is alright, but Angelina Jolie is what I'm really aiming for. Although I think I might take Jenna Jameson when she comes begging me; I'm not really sure if she's good enough..."

You're talking about dream wages here like they're owed to you!! £100k minimum!?!?! We'll all be lucky to make that!! I'll count myself sorted when/if my wage hits that!!! Not much after tax? It'll be over 6 times the average wage. God, how bad is that... You're facing a hell of a hard slog. It's not like you walk out of uni and there's a nice plush job at CC waiting for you with £100k.

heh
you are doing precisely what I did.

I thought Insolvency was not on this year - or was that last.

Are you doing personal or corporate tax.

Insolvency was my favourite too... it was the one I came top in. Prentice is a wonderful man, and Stevens is exceptional. Does Fidelis still come?
