If there are a minority then how come I only saw like 3 people dressed in something other than versace/carrying a louis vutton bag/Gucci sunglasses holding their messy bleached blonde hair into place...

Yeah! Damn those posh London types! **Pulls cuff over Armani watch, brushes naturally bleach blonde hair out of face & zips up Louis Vuitton bag**

Curses! Er... I mean don't judge me! I'm nice!

I don't really know what 'social class' I will fit into as such as I have lived abroad for 10 years of my life in the Middle East (originally from Ireland though). I go to a British independent fee paying school (expat kids don't have a choice in this matter, all of the schools are fee paying), but the company that my dad works for pays the fees... I guess I would fit into the middle class area but it is very puzzling because when you live out here expats are in an odd way a group of their own, regardless of your former class background.

Rahs can be annoying but they don't bother me that much. After going to a school of lots of nationalities, it will probably be a bit odd being in a predominantly white environment (I'm white myself), but it isn't a problem. After having lived out of the UK for so long, I'm more worried about chavs and thugs to be honest :frown: Kids who've lived abroad don't tend to be as streetwise.

Exeter is nowhere near as chavtastic as other areas I've seen (Cardiff is full of them :p: and where I live normally the chav level is just stratospheric so Exeter was a huge relief) and it's very safe as well.

Cardiff is full of them :p:

Too true  :frown:

All I see are chavs when I go to town, haha :p: That's not to say all Cardiffians are chavs though. I'm certainly not one :p:
In two terms I've only encountered chavs a few times (normally in Primark...) Although overhearing their conversations can be *very* amusing..
the city centre has a pikey park which drives me mad. you know, the one beside central station and behind the phoenix ("rougement gardents"? (sp?)). i've lived in the city centre for a few years and avoid that place like the plague because it seems to me to be the only place where the pikeys cluster in the summer to drink diamond white and get into arguments which scare the young children.

no exeter's not posh i been there before and although quite middle class that doesnt make it automatically posh it's just a case of adjusting to the local dialect lol

We're talking about Exeter the uni, not Exeter the town.
Reply 110
yes i was referring to the uni
Reply 111
See, I would disagree. The statement you made sounds more like Exeter the town.
I'd agree with Angelil on this one, saying local dialect makes it sound as if you're talking about the town [Devonshire accent] I wouldn't say the uni itself has a local dialect...especially since everyone come from all over the place!

It's true that Exeter has a slightly larger proportion of Independent School Students (24%) than other Unis, but people who went to private schools aren't necessarily posh! I did and while i would admit to a slightly elevated elocution :p: I definitely wouldn't call myself posh.

That said, i was in state school until year 8 and mine wasn't a boarding school, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyway all this is beside the point, make friends with posh peeps and you might get free drinks! :p:

Aside from the overtly 'posh' people in Ex (who usually migrate from Holland Hall to Long Lounge and back and are thus pretty avoidable  ), most of the time you really can't tell what background someone has. And to be honest, once you're past freshers week, NO-ONE CARES. As for chavs, I don't think I've seen any on campus, ever.
Exeter has chavs?! :p:

That reminds me of something amusing today...

The cash point at Natwest on campus was up the creek swallowing cards.. Anyway went into Natwest and queued up, almost immediately a stereotypical 'Exeter Luvvie' with her backcombed hair and huge sunglasses rushes past me to the now-free cashier and launches a diatrabe about the loss of her card, etc etc, almost on the verge of tears, the poor thing. I think I should feel guilty as I couldn't really help but smile.

Very, very true. Unless you live in or near Holland or can afford to have lunch at the Long Lounge, its very unlikely you're going to see much of these elitist types. Even doing Law, which some regard to be the highest proportion for it, you don't really notice it. Of course you can tell the Prince William types a mile off (pastel coloured Ralph Lauren shirts tucked into straight cut chinos with deck shoes or brown brogues, a look I have yet to perfect :P) but for the most part as stated, you can't tell what background someone has at all. In halls I didn't live with anyone from London or the Home Counties at all. Although in the next block over there was a guy who went to Eton and one of his friends from Holland who was also private schooled, but got on really well with them, the background thing just isn't an issue.

Being as it is Exeter second in line after Bristol for Oxbridge rejects you're going to get that proportion, but not once have I ever been made to feel like I don't belong here or have been shunned for being 'one of them poor folk'

It is not lost on me how amusing it is to see 'being streetwise' as such an alien concept to these types though

They do seem to try to put people from similar backgrounds together in accommodation as well so all the rahs end up in their own little rah ghettos away from us commoners :p:

"Rah ghettos"
