Not sleeping!

So I seem to be going through a phase where I wake up at say, 2.45AM or 3.30AM, and can NOT get back to sleep. I mean usually I wake up and after a few minutes I'd fall back asleep. But now as of lately, once I wake up I just can not get to sleep. I start thinking and I just can't stop... like life/exams/etc. So I end up tossing and turning allll night. And I have exams next week and I'm so tired from this distinct lack of sleep that I can't revise or anything, let alone do an exam.

Has anyone else been experiencing similar problems? Got any solutions? Is it insomnia or is just a phase down to stress, etc?

Waking-Up Consistently Early:

Having thoroughly enjoyed Legally Blonde recently, I currently love quotes from it. A quote of Aristotle's, pertaining to law, was featured in the movie; regarding rest, but it's his line of "it is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom" that has me purring. If the answer was evident thousand of years ago, then you'd certainly do well to act upon it today.

Lengths of Sleep vary:

I don't intend to sleep set hours, because, if I did, I'd sometimes want to fall asleep before I was sleepy enough to, thus wasting time lying in bed awake. Assuming that we need exactly the same hours of sleep every night would be a fallacy; plenty of scientific papers and reviews conclude that, per person, sleep needs vary from day to day.

the Solution:

Allow for going to bed time to deviate by +/- 2 hours around your desired bedtime, while maintaining the same rising time of 07:00/08:00 for at least 14 days. By doing this, you'll create yonks more time to do oodles and oodles of things that are waaaaay more interesting than sleeping.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and cant get back to sleep you may as well do some revision for those exams.

Lavender is supposed to help you sleep, so maybe put one of those little scented pouches under your pillow. malt drinks like horlicks are also supposed to help, so you could have one of those if you cant go back to sleep. its probably just because your stressed with exams/uni work, and youll probably find that when exams and coursework are over, you will start to sleep a lot better.

I am always up rather early, well I never like to sleep past 10 but other days I'll get up at 7.30-8 and at weekends 9-9.30.

Yup, I go to bed when I'm tired.

Hmm you're making more demands now. Though I don't see how that'll help.. it's the middle of the night I'm having trouble with. How does one focus the mind on sleeping rather than thinking of anything and EVERYTHING else?

Thing is, you see, when I wake up in the middle of the night I'm really tired. So I'd never be able to get out of bed then, never mind... REVISE. But I still somehow can't get to sleep! Mad, I know!

You are probably right, though I could do with sleeping now before exams rather than once they're over.

Trying to do that will just keep you awake. Focus instead on what you're gonna do during the day to tire yourself as much as possible for the next time you go to bed.

Therein lies the problem. I think too much about the previous day and what my next day has in store for me and that is what is keeping me awake! Anyway, I'm mega tired when I go to bed... I still wake up though.

I've had the same problem lately so I keep some revision notes on my bedside table.

If you have time, try exercise, just a half hour swim or something during the day, but not to close to bedtime. ive also heard that if you revise on your bed you tend not sleep as well, as you associate your bed with doing work.

I would get hold of Valerian Plus. Take more than 1 for the ultimate drousy experience.

it's called stress/tension.

sleeping pills are your best bet until after the exams when it should sort itself out.

i find by writing all those things down that are running through your head that you clear your mind of those thoughts and so can go back to sleep..

Practically everyone wakes up in the night occasionally. It's also really not uncommon to think you are awake half the night, but infact you drift off pretty quickly. I can't remember the exact numbers, but a huge proportion of people who claim to have insomnia actually fall asleep within 5 or 10 minutes.
Yep I have exactly the same problem. Your brain probably doesn't want to shut down because you're revising, and at night worries always seem to creep in. It's quite difficult to get yourself out of the pattern. I'd say try writing things down or distracting yourself before you go to bed and using sleeping pills such as piriton.

Ah yes, well I know this because on a normal night I wake up and drift off pretty quickly again but lately, however, I am not drifting off after waking up. I was also speaking to a few friends and they claim that they sleep through the night without waking up at all. Sounds strange to me. :s-smilie:

TBH, I don't want to take any tablets/sleeping pills. Don't want to become dependent on anything! Maybe I'll just write stuff down....

AGH EXAMS.

I had exactly that. Sometimes I'd wake up at 3am, and not go to sleep again. Sometimes I couldnt go to sleep until 3am even though I went to bed at ~8pm (it was when I was a bit younger). Sometimes I can't get to sleep now, such as before an exciting day, before exams, whatever.

I got some sleeping pills from my GP, I can normally predict when it'll happen (and it happens rarely now) so its fine. Its really because I'm thinking too much, then looking at the time tick by and how late I'm going to sleep before an important day.
You have my problem!

I toss and turn when im stressed and just keep thinking about stuff that wont go away. When you wake up write down everything you need to do/revise or anything that you think of and then do it all in the morning. It works for me and it feels like i dont need to think anymore because ive listed problems.

Yeah. I gotta turn about 20 times before I sleep. Kinda get used to it now. Writing everything down would probably make things worse for me, but yeah, same problem really. GP it, and get some sleeping pills. They're good.
