Is it irrational to worry about other people flying?

I've never been on a plane, and I have a slight fear of flying. I've never had to fly, and to be honest the idea of it doesn't appeal to me at all. However, is it irrational to worry about others flying? My mum is going on a trip to an island just off France. Apparently it's only about an hours flight, and the planes one of the smaller ones that just a handful of people can travel in. The people my mum are going with have done the trip lots of times before, but is it still irrational for me to worry? I can't seem to help it.

To answer your question, yes it is a little irrational, but understandable nevertheless. My gf flew out to Florida in the summer and I was worried about her, even though I have no fear of flying. Statistically you are at much higher risk driving a car then flying.
Statistically the chances of a plane going down due to turbulance is, what, one in a billion? Or is it a million?

If you've never been flying before then how do you know that there is anything to worry about?

One in five, isn't it?

(I should probably not try and scare the OP)

Anyway, it is completely mental to worry about someone else doing something you've never done yourself but are still scared of...

No plane has crashed due to turbulence. There is nothing to worry about. If you want to look at it in the year 2000 there were 49,000 airplane flights in one day and they fly everyday. And if you go on an airline with good maintenence i.e european, american, middleeastern, american, australasian, asian and a few others then you will be fine. Just don't fly Helios, even before that crash the mecahnic of that airline said he would not let that aircraft fly as it had a problem on a flight before ending in an emergency landing but the airline threatened to sack him if he didnt sign the aircraft back into service.

You can easily look up on google which airlines are bad. but like i said that is the only one in europe that i can think of
It's irrational because you can't do anything about it.

Its natural for you to worry especially as its your mum, and as you have a fear of flying when you know others like your mum will be flying all those triggers you have for a fear of flying will surface so you will worry.
