The Student Room Group

Is this normal?

My brother is 18 and wouldn't let me in his room, when he came out you could tell his face had face powder/foundation on. He denied it then admitted it and said he has 'bad skin' (his skin is clear of spots). I said 'Why have you done this?' I told him to be careful cos people would notice and poke fun. He got mad and thought by insulting me he would feel better. I just think its odd to touch up spots but for a bloke to use powder is face seems very strange. It worries me as he has lost 4 stone from being obese and seems to be looking too thin. I just worry he is being pressurised to 'look the part' :frown:

Can't talk to my friends as they are the kind to bring this up all the time and slag him off. Plus my dad wouldn't be happy!

have you considered he might be bulimic?

i'm not saying he definitely is. it's a possibility though.

-won't let you in his room because of binge food/bags of puke?
-covered his face up because of puffyness/redness/burst blood vessels from puking?

don't jump to conclusions, just keep a look out. and if he is, don't overreact, and do look up advice online - there are a LOT of misconceptions about eating disorders. listen to his side

are there any other signs? how does he act around food? does he eat very little at some times, then eat a lot at other times? does food go missing? have you noticed anything strange with his spending (i.e. does he run out of money quickly?)

Something like this came to my mind when I read this thread as well.

Keep an eye out.

Lots of people lose weight, maybe he just got tired of being obese?

True, but I thought it was worth pointing out because a lot of people never consider eating disorders and boys in the same thought.
