Secondary amenorrhea

Hey guys,

I haven't gotten my periods since mid september 2006. Consulted a gyne and she says it's due to my rapid weight loss which is true. I've done my blood test- Haemoglobin's excellent, prolactin's normal. So what should I be looking at from here? I've got an appointment again today but I'm just wondering. Personally though, I think I maintain a poor diet; mind you I've been on Vitamin and calcium supplements so that's not something to fret about I presume but what bothers me is what to do now! I mean should I test my oestrogen and progesterone levels or what? Is there any medication that'd bring my periods or summat?
i think you KNOW the answer is related to your diet and weight loss.

are you at a healthy weight now?

if so, stop trying to lose weight is my advice.

even if you are overweight, i think you should stop losing weight at such a fast rate - you body OBVIOUSLY doesn't like it.

if you're underweight, the answer is obvious. try to put some weight on and consider why you were trying to lose it in the first place.

i lost my periods at a healthy weight through unhealthy methods of losing weight. 2 yrs on, i've only had 3 light periods, gained to a healthy weight... and still nothing. take this seriously and sort out the problem sooner rather than later. i know how easy it is to just put it out of your mind.

hopefully if you maintain your weight (or put some on, if necessary) for a while your body will get more comfortable again.

my doctor said the only way to get my periods back was to put on weight.

I lost my periods due to PTSD, and it took them four years to return to normal. In my case, they tried to put me on the Pill, so they might do that with you.

Well I weigh 50-51 kgs and I'm aprox 160cm tall so I guess I'm a healthy weight? :hmmmm:

Your BMI is about 19.9, so it's the lower range of healthy, but not too low. Wouldn't try to lose any more though.

I honestly can't say what will make your periods return to normal - they probably will eventually if you stay healthy, and not having periods (provided you're otherwise healthy) is not really too much of an inconvenience . The gynaecologist will know what he/she wants to test for and will sort that out, so don't worry about getting tests yourself!

Hi, how underweight would you have to be to have secondary amennorhea? Cause I feel as if im underweight, though I menstruate normally.

my BMI is 17.51
I haven't had one in eighteen months due to being underweight. I've now gained weight back and have been in a healthy weight bracket for several months now...but nothing. How much longer will they be? Because I hate being so fat now and I don't want to gain any more :frown:
