I didn't get into UCD in the end but if you get in, fair play to you!! They're so bloody fussy with candidates. The only person I know who got in did so with 4As at A level.

However, she didn't end up taking the place and went to Liverpool in the end where I met her. I think she was warned by a vet she knew who went to UCD that Dublin was really expensive to live in and nobody really went out all that much because it's so expensive.

Sorry I can't give you any better advice but it will be expensive (as you probably already know) and there's cheaper places to live! Plus, I don't like the Dublin accent hehe!!

Good luck!

i live in northern ireland and my preference wud b 2 study at ucd but im a bit confused!my problem is that to get in2 ucd you need to do 4 A levels but the uk unis only require 3 A levels so in my attempt to get 4 A's at A level in order to have a chance of getting in to ucd the increased workload compared to doing 3 A levels my decrease my chances of getin the grades required to get in2 uk unis!so i was wondering if it wud b a gud idea to 4get bout ucd and jus do 3 A levels and concentrate on trying to get in2 a uk uni? ne advice wud b great, cheers

If you're confident you will cope with 4 A levels and get the 4 A's then go for it!!! Apply to UCD and the best of luck to you! Given half a chance I would have applied there cos I love Ireland and it would have been awesome to study there. All potential vets are intelligent but if like me theres a chance that because of the extra workload your grades might suffer, do 3 and concentrate on the UK unis. It wont do you any good if you are capable of getting 3 As easily but do 4 A levels for UCD and end up sacrificing one or more of the As because of the workload. Then if you get AABB or even ABBB, your chances at UK vet schools (which would make up your other choices anyway) would weaken compared to if you had done 3 A levels with a lesser workload and got 3 comfortable As.

Hope that makes sense! lol. And I hope its of some use. xxx

thanks for that, i understand wat u mean as im thinking along the same lines!although i reali wud luv to go 2 ucd since i live in ireland but on the other hand i wudnt wana jeopardise my chances of getn in2 a uk uni by doin 4 A levels even tho it offers no advantage and my grades suffering due to the extra workload!also if i went to ucd i wud hav considerably less debts since most of your tuition fees are paid for you in ROI which also y i wud it suit me more to go there!although the opportunity of studying and living in england or scotland is appealing since it wud a great experience!im stil soo confused, at least i hav til septemeber or so 2 decide!lol! ne1 else ne advice, cheers!

All I can add is that although Dublin is expensive, the payment of your fees should more than make up for it and saying that nobody goes out in UCD/Dublin (as the poster earlier said) is complete rubbish!! Quite apart from everything else there are loads of student bars and events on campus, let alone all the student nights in the city. Do I smell sour grapes? Hmm...

Sour grapes? Not from me; I don't actually like Dublin as a city. The thing about going out was heard from another vet who graduated from UCD a few years ago so maybe things have changed. Personally, I don't like the way the uni works their entry system (no personal statement and no interview; fantastic selection) and no matter if my tuition fees would have been paid or not, I still couldn't have afforded to live in Dublin, the same way I couldn't afford to live in London. Give me my Liverpool (no. 1 vet school 2006 :p: ) anyday!

could ne ucd vets tell me wat the course in ucd is like compared to the uk unis?wat is the workload?also alot has been mentioned about ucd's selection process, do they just select the applicants with the best score? wat A levels are needed? on the website it says 550 points minimum which means AABB (560) would meet minimum requirements but i feel you would need AAAB or AAAA to have better chance!ne1 who nos the selection process please fill me in!cheers

I think you do smell sour grapes, and they stink! Liverpool doesn't have an AVMA accredited course so that speaks volumes! I've rejected an offer for Liverpool in favour of UCD (starting next month).
To be honest all unis have a nightlife (apart from Aberwyswith,Wales (however you spell it). Anyway you're there for a Vet Degree, friends is just a bonus! The system of not interviewing people for UCD did suprise me but if you're that dedicated your CV, work experience and skills should make up for it. Anyone can give the same BS answers in an interview.

This poll is stupid though, it's really asking where did you go / where are you hoping to go. Everyone knows that you will fly the flag for the university you go to; me for UCD and Glasgow, a few friends solely for Edinburgh Royal Dick School, etc.

UCD does accept people with lower grades in graduate entry which suggests their teaching is better though  AND it is cheaper fees for graduate entry.
