hours /week

On the oxford law faculty website it states the undergraduate degree is expected to occupy you for around 45 hours a week, concentrated work. How accurate is this estimate? And how does this compare to other top unis such as Nottingham? Is the difference in workload significant?

It's differs quite a lot depend on what course you do and what college for attend. For me, I probable do well over 45 hours a week because I do a very time consuming course and go to a very academic college; but some people do far less. And the terms are very short so you can't really compare to other universities.

What subject do you do? and which college?

I worked out that for Physics you'll have to do about 25hrs a week <waits for Elpaw to correct her> which I'm quite pleased about as I work far more than that now! I know Physics isn't the same as Law though as I'll have fewer essays/books to read and probably less work a term but more revision over hols than Law and other arty subjects!

PPE at Balliol. 7/8 lectures a week, 2 classes, 2 tutorials, and a Maths class. Plus loads of additional reading.

so would someone studying PPE at a less academic college also do over 45 hours a week?

They'd still do quite a lot; exactly how much I'm not sure. But in general, PPE has one of the heaviest workloads - along with Law and Medicine.

Maybe 25 hours of lectures/practicals but I think you'll also have little things called tutorials (I had 2 a week when I was a 1st year physicist) - the work for them tends to take up a bit of your time - maybe 10 hours per tutorial....

to throw in my experience of the medic workload.. (although timetable varies quite a bit from term to term so far):

7-8+ lectures a week
1 DR and or/Histology 'session' (3hours) or both
1/2 practicals (biochem, phys, pharm, each with 3 hours timetabled for)

1 seminar/stats class (2hours) ~every 2 weeks
~ 3 tutes a week (1 requiring ~10hours work i think we've estimated & the rest maybe ~5)
Doctor patient sessions & write ups ~every 3 weeks (~2.5hour sessions)

then we're supposed to be preparing in advance, doing write-ups, reading round the subjects & going to optional talks.

(&congrats on the bumps Baz..i made mental note to appreciate your bow! & as you may have guessed this extended weekend i've done very little of all this work! )

Oops! Ok, when I read the info on oxford's website i didnt see that it said each tutorial is about 10hrs+ work. Looks like I'm goin to be working like 40hrs a week <groans> It's still less (just slightly) than I work at moment (inc hours at school and hw time)! Never mind, i'm sure i'll love it when I get there!

Except he was being tricksy and not actually rowing at bow - I did the same
I've just worked it out and last term (forget this term: Exams, Eights, blah blah blah) I did approximately 60-65 hours work per week; which was about the norm around here for my subject. And lets not even go into the holiday work we get; normally colleges give one or two essays, we get five or six.

And I was at Bow for the first 2 days, just moved forward for the last 2. And well done to Magdalen, I saw an Oriel boaties at 6:30pm on Saturday night, and they didn't look happy - probable muttering something like "where's my knife"; quickly followed by "We'll be having deer tonight...".

Convincingly. Enough to put it beyond doubt who the faster crew were.

So having been Head of the River for about 400 years, they get crap just as my best mate is about to go there. Typical...

They finished second, ahead of Pembroke which was a saving grace really. I can't imagine what would of happened if Pembroke bumped Oriel on the last day, and they finished thrid.

So not too much of a disaster then. Phew. Anyway, they'll win next year. I'll put a fiver on that

It is highly likely that Oxford will be more work than you are doing now. It's hard to explain in terms of hours, but you will understand in October...
