I think i have ADHD

Now before someone says that ADHD doesn't exist. It does. People who are smarter then you have confirmed it's existence. So i don't need this thread to be "You don't have ADHD. Your just stupid".

I was looking at the wikipedia site for ADHD. I realised that i have a lot of the symptoms there.

The symptoms of ADHD fall into the following two broad categories:[6]

I'll bold the ones i have with Yes.

Inattention:

1. Failure to pay close attention to details or making careless mistakes when doing schoolwork or other activities Yes
2. Trouble keeping attention focused during play or tasks Yes
3. Appearing not to listen when spoken to Yes
4. Failure to follow instructions or finish tasks Yes
5. Avoiding tasks that require a high amount of mental effort and organization, such as school projects Yes
6. Frequently losing items required to facilitate tasks or activities, such as school supplies Yes
7. Excessive distractibility Yes
8. Forgetfulness Yes
9. Procrastination, inability to begin an activity Yes
10. Difficulties with household activities (cleaning, paying bills, etc.) Yes
11. Difficulty falling asleep, may be due to too many thoughts at night HELL YEAH
12. Frequent emotional outbursts Yes
13. Easily frustrated Yes
14. Easily distracted Yes

Hyperactivity-impulsive behavior

1. Fidgeting with hands or feet or squirming in seat Yes
2. Leaving seat often, even when inappropriate Yes
3. Running or climbing at inappropriate times
4. Difficulty in quiet play
5. Frequently feeling restless OH YEAH
6. Excessive speech Sometimes
7. Answering a question before the speaker has finished Yes
8. Failure to await one's turn Yes
9. Interrupting the activities of others at inappropriate times Yes
10. Impulsive spending, leading to financial difficulties Yes

When i read below it says

A positive diagnosis is usually only made if the person has experienced six of the above symptoms for at least three months.

I have more then six and i have had these problems for most of my life. Does this mean that i have ADHD?

Obviously I know that Internet diagnosis isn't smart. I'll leave the real confirmation to the professionals. But what do you guys think?

I think, if you are worried you have a medical problem, you should take your concerns and this information to a doctor who can actually diagnose you!

Self-diagnosing a mental disorder is just stupid. Go see a specialist.

Lets be honest. Most of those are subjective and are linked with bad parenting rather than any mental defiency. Also many of them are rephrased twice such as
Excessive distractibility/Easily distracted and also one of these things will lead onto another and another. For example "Failure to follow instructions or finish tasks" and Failure to pay close attention to details or making careless mistakes when doing schoolwork or other activities" Are going to lead to Procrastination, inability to begin an activity and frustration.

I would be able to tick all the boxes as well if i didnt listen and messed about in lessons and drank sugar drinks and alcopops all night like so many pikies at my school do.

Looks to me they just wrote down a drunk's problems, and added "difficulty falling asleep, may be due to too many thoughts at night" so noone notices.

Don't trust this website.

To be fair, those symtpoms are consistent with both depression and bipolar as well. Or just creative people in general.

if you have any worries go see your GP/doc. personally, id say that if someone falls into those categories. (like i do) youre just slightly lazy and your mind is often running wild

I think a lot of people can experience things in that list. I can say yes to at least 12 of them. But I don't have ADHD. At least, I've never been told or thought I did. I think what matters more is to what extent you experience them.

So you may well have ADHD. But you won't know till you ask a professional. Make an appointment at your GP's tomorrow.

For the record my parentage was good. I wasn't a bad child and I am still not a teenager gone amok.

I think you should read carefully next time.

This was the last thing i wrote. Couple of centimetres above your post.

first of all i don't like those self-diagnosis things off the web... (1/2 my psychology class thought they were autistic  a couple of years ago)..

secondly, if you have it, i doubt you have it BADLY, perhaps in a more mild form. I say this because i've got this american relative who has it. He was diagnosed from a really early age, and without his medication he is a TOTALLY different person, just unbearable and not nice to be around at all...

... i would have thought if it was a problem your parents (or whoever looks after you) would have cottened onto this and taken you to a doctor....

... but if you feel it's a real problem, book an appointment and see what the doc says...

Adhd is different for everyone. Some people are hyperactive and everyone around them will notice something unusual. Others who have ADHD are not hyperactive but they are inattentive. These kids are harder to diagnose because the troublemakerks are the one who get the attention. This is why more boys then girls are diagnosed with ADHD because boys usually have the hyperactive form and girls have the inattetive form.

For me i was hyperactive when i was a child. I was unbearable. My mum would disicpline me (she beleived in coporal punishment). I was terrified of her but i couldn't help my self. I was a nightmare for my teachers but eventually i moved schools and the fear of my mum got me to stop moving around in class and when she was around. In the playground i was still the same guy. When i grew up my hyperactivity disappered but i still had my loss of concentration. I have only just realised that i have ADHD because of self diagnosis. I would have gone on life thinking that i was stupid.

If you really want to be officially diagnosed then see a doctor.

why don't you go to you GP see what they have to say, if not for a diagnosis, maybe things that can help supress it (that's if it's still causing you problems of course).

Secondly, i don't mean to sound rude, but i hope you don't go in thinking (again this only really applies if it still affecting you) you can't do something because of your ADHD. I know everyone is different, but i know a few people who would just give up on something and use it as an excuse.

I hope everything is ok now :yy:

Just go to a doctor. Reading lists of symptoms is SUCH a bad idea. you can convince yourself that you have everything from a terrible disease to a mental illness.

I'm not saying you don't have it but you just cannot diagnose yourself.

Reply 14

To reiterate what everybody has already said, you should consult a professional for diagnosis. Your GP will be able to refer you to a specialist.

I have actually tried a lot of things to supress or alleviate the symptons. So far i have cut simple carbohydrates,as many food colouring and artifical flavours i could possibly, stopped eating saturated fat, taken more omega 3 and vitamin supplements and i have excerised. I now run around my street for 30 minutes a day. Guess what happened? I stopped figiting less. My concentration problems is still bad.

I knew what my problem was before i found out my ADHD. In fact i described my problems to somebody else and they told me that it sounded like ADHD. I went to my GP and he said that it sounded like ADHD but the proccess for offical diganosis is long and hard. Before i knew about ADHD. I knew what i could do and couldn't do. I knew that i could never become a doctor or a policeofficer. Because any job that required me to spend a great deal writting or reading would be impossible for me. Discovering i have ADHD hasnt't changed my outlook on life.

First of all, OP, can I just say that you were pretty rude to Bunthulhu when she was only trying to stop you doing something stupid, i.e. effectively getting a diagnosis of a load of random internet users. Not on really.

Secondly, that list of symptoms, as with lots of internet self diagnosis tools, is very vague and a lot of the things really could apply to anyone if you looked carefully enough. You say you're not a teenager run amok but in my experience that is what ADHD is - out of control behaviour. The person I know of my own age who has it has nights where she is totally wild, screaming, yelling, pulling her hair out, talking nonsense to her flatmates, breaking stuff etc etc. She is literally like somebody gone mad. You can't get any sense out of her and if you speak to her she is totally unable to follow the thread of what you're saying, much less grasp any kind of logic, and is generally impossible to calm down. She finds it incredibly embarrassing once she's returned to normal, but has literally no control over it. If that sounds like you, fair enough, but procrastinating, fidgeting, losing stuff, having a short attention span et al are just human traits that occur at different times according to tiredness, stress etc and more frequently for some people. ADHD is truly debilitating in terms of living a normal life.

Now I know you said you're not looking for a diagnosis but you are looking for people's opinions and I really don't think it's a good idea. Close the thread, or you'll just start getting unhelpful or worrying replies. If you are genuinely worried, go and see your GP.

I work with a guy with ADHD, and believe me, you can tell if you've got it, there doesn't seem to be any ambiguity to it at all judging from the clients i've worked with.

Reply 18

I dont think you do.

You sat there and emboldened all of your 'yes's' lol.

I don't want to be rude but you are the one confused. ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Not everyone who has it is like your friends. She is probably hyperactive. Not everyone who is ADHD is hyperactive. Some people who have ADHD are lazy disorganised and unable to concentrate. The people around them won't notice anything unusual. Hyperactives are the ones people notice.
