Let's say I want to do two years in IBD and then get out. As everyone does...

If you divide the major investment banks into Tier 1, 2 and 3, how would it go?

You should not divide them by bank when it comes to the bulge brackets. You want to be placed within the best "groups" on the street. If you do some research, you'll find some lower tier BBs have stronger groups than higher tier BBs.

However, if you don't know which group you will be in...

Tier 1:
MS/GS/JPM

Tier 2:
Rest

Just echoing the other posts on here.

It's generally about what 'groups' are the best right now - most banks in IBD and S&T have different product groups/industry groups (IBD) or product desks (S&T).

Goldman is known very widely for their TMT (Technology, Media and Telecoms) group within IBD, likewise Barclays M&A is very solid. So, it all depends on what you want to do really.

Generally speaking though, the very very rough breakdown is like this:

Tier 1:
GS, MS, JPM, Lazard, Moelis, Evercore, Centerview

Tier 2:
Citi, BAML, DB, Barclays, Credit Suisse, UBS, Rothschild, Macquarie, Jefferies

Tier 3:
Nomura, HSBC, SocGen, BNP, RBC

Your ranking is very questionable.

To begin with, pray tell why are Evercore and Centerview are more prestigious than Citi, BAML, DB, Barclays, Credit Suisse?

Also what makes Macquarie and Jefferies more prestigious than any of the Tier 3 players?

I was really borderline on those two! The could pretty much be interchangeable with the latter part of the BBs but I just feel because of their small size (slightly harder to break in) and above street pay, they just nudge it.

My opinion

Tier 1: GS,JP,MS,DB
Tier 2: Rest of BB's

However even I would say this a questionable hierachy.

JP is the best trading house, GS is the best IB/M&A House, DB is the best Fixed income/FX house.

You should choose based on where you wish to go.

None taken buddy, I always consider the source lol

I would advise you to realise that the truly successful people don't go around hating. They might be thinking it but a sense of achievement or confidence holds them back.

im not hating, im being blunt and truthful, especially in ibd, you wouldnt last longer than three months. im saying it considering the help you need, if youre really mid 20s and a doctor and posting your life stories on here and not trolling, then you really need help. fix that first, and then come ask for advice rather than acting condescending, you might learn something then.

explain to me which syndicates in ibd you like the sound of?
