Could I join the TA while still at uni?

I'm definitely off to uni in September 2007, to study Law at either Sheffield, Leeds or Manchester, but after I graduate I'm thinking about joining the forces for a few years for a bit of life experience and all that. It's something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. Anyway I was wondering, could I be in the TA while studying at university? It would be a good way to earn some extra money and the experience would be fantastic.

Thanks a lot.

I know of someone at my BMF training that is currently at uni while being in the TA so it is definetly possible if its something you want to go for.

Although the only issue that comes to my mind is, what if you get a posting while in the middle of a uni semester.

Why not join the OTC and experience all the regular experiences of the TA but with students who you could relate with a bit more and it would be more accommodating with exams etc.

Join the OTC (Officer Training Corps). Its a great laugh, you'll learn a lot about the military and you'll experience loads of crazy stuff. Its designed around your uni committments and you get paid! Just be careful not to let it become more important than your course! Where else can you play in a rugby team of students and play against an infantry regiment thats just returned from Northern Ireland! Nice. You'll be working as an Officer Cadet if you join the OTC, learning how to be an effective leader.

This forum always strikes me as particularly RAF-heavy ... you might want to consider also checking ARRSE (http://www.arrse.co.uk/cpgn2/Forums/viewforum/f=80.html) for some advice.

And yes, as far as I'm aware you can join the TA whilst at Uni, but consider that you're then liable for mobilisation -- getting called up for 6 months in Afghanistan during the middle of an academic year (and thus delaying your graduation by up to two years if your University aren't happy with you rejoining your course halfway through a year) is one distinctly likely prospect you won't have to deal with in the OTC.
I think that you have an automatic exemption from mobilisation if you can prove that you are in full time education? Anyone know the exact details on that?

Correct. PSAOs won't bother putting your name forward if you are a student. Plus with intelligent mobilisation (oxymoron?) you won't go unless you volunteer, and even then you will need to be selected to go.
