AHRC funding

When I read that the AHRC gives X number of grants to first class degree standard students how do they decide who holds a first class degree if the student is still doing their degree? Is it based on past marks or what their referees's predict they will get?

If it is the latter does this mean grants are condtional on getting a certain class of degree? Do they make such requests?

Also is anyone here thinking about applying or has applied for AHRC funding? Any tips??

Thanks

One assumes, using rational thought, that it is based upon those things you mentioned. How else could it be?

If you get a first you stand more chance of getting funding I would guess. It all depends on the institution, too. There are obviously many variables. No one on TSR would really have the answer. Unless they are an AHRC official.

You won't get any help from those applying, for what I would hope are obvious reasons.

There are a couple with funding already, though.

No, basically they fuss around with applications until people actually have their grades. You need to download the DR-form in the download section of the website and give it to your university, so they can fill in your actual grades once they have them and send it off to the AHRC. They have a June deadline, though, so if the AHRC doesn't have your grades by then, the application won't be processed. You then won't start hearing from the AHRC until August.

Many thanks. Why do you think they ask referees to predict your class of degree?

I have no idea, to be honest. To account for cases when everything points to somebody being a sure first, but they mess up at the last minute?? More likely it's just an attempt to get referees to be precise, though, because obviously vague praise isn't going to benefit anybody.

@PBF Not yet, I'm afraid. I'm just getting my application underway myself, which is why I've been looking through the website a bit.

Best advice would read the 62 page guideline which you can download off the AHRC website.

It cleared some stuff up for me. And I'm guessing that they ask for a prediction of your final degree result just like teachers had to give predicted grades on the ucas form
