I would say most chromebooks are more like notebooks than laptops- they might be useful for note-taking in lectures, and some research, and can probably cope with writing essays.

Obviously a chromebook is limited to programs available via the google store, so if you wanted to use more specialist software such as SPSS or Minitab for statistics, I'm not sure this would be possible on a chromebook.

You could probably manage using a mix of your chromebook and university computers, but if you wanted a laptop that would do everything you might need at uni, I don't think a chromebook would be enough.

For university, I would say no. Having access to the full versions of Microsoft Office applications is near-essential when writing for essays and various projects.

However, I have used Googles range of web-apps for other activities such as group presentation work and have found them very good, but this is something that also works on a Windows or Mac so it would be more ideal to go for that.

I think I'm going to get a chromebook as something cheap to take to lectures for note taking, but I will also have a very powerful PC with me as well

They very limited to quite basic usage, so office equivalent programs, browsing, etc
Very limited storage on most and need for constant wi-fi connection.
