Thinking of dropping out from Bath ......

I'm in my second year at Bath currently doing exams. I was lucky to get on my course - didn't get the grades but they took me anyway and I was well chuffed at the time. Since then I've struggled with the course and it is not all I hoped and I'm probably not all they hoped! Now exams are going down the pan and I'm seriously considering dropping out, making some money and then starting over somewhere else in September. My course is five years with placement so I've a long way to go if I stayed and now would be the right time to make the break. Just wondered if anyone else has ever felt like this and what they did or just whether anyone has any comments/advice. Thanks

It's not much help but I know how you feel- I'm in the same position. The sociology course was not what I expected, too much science theory! I've got an interview with Surrey which is less sciencey on Friday.

If it's the Bath course that is the problem, rather than the subject, can you swap course too? Or if you just want to get a degree and get out of there, why not switch to a 3 year course if possible?

Good Luck!

I'm not getting on great with my course either, I'm hoping to transfer within my department to something different as I really like Bath, but if not I'm not sure whether I'll drop out and start else-where next year or find employment. I'd love to carry on, but I'm pretty sure I've failed my maths modules, so more maths modules next term and next year would be a nightmare!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Sarah, you haven't failed Maths, don't be silly. You're going to look like a right daft arse when you realise you got a million per cent.

aww,,why do people want to leave/change courses? is it because there is too much to do, is it difficult, just boring or bad lecturers and little help to get? or is it a combination of all these things? I am very curious, cause i may choose bath, but from what you say it doesnt sound too promising?
:frown: dont leave, marianne!stay do sociology w meeeee!!!

For me its because the course was different to what I expected it to be. Also, my maths lecturer last term wasn't very good - I know very few people that understood him, you'd sit in a lecture, write notes for an hour then come out not having a clue what it was about. Getting help from my tutor for maths wasn't exactly an option either, as I couldn't understand him too.. but saying that I left it too late, only realised I was failing badly about a week before exams, so I could have got extra help if I'd have asked earlier. The rest of my modules are well taught though & the lectures were interesting.

Two important persons/place to contact before taking any decision:

1.personal tutor. Tell your problem and ask for his advice. I know some personal tutors are not very comfortable to talk to but still go for it.

2.AWARE - run by student's union. If you don't go in person, you can email them (check bathstudent.com), but it is better to talk to them in person and see what they have got to say.

I also consider dropping out at times because my course seems to take everything out of me. :frown: And my personal tutor keeps saying everything is going to be normal, not everyone is good at this and that, etc but I doubt that!

Sounds like you are in a similar place to me (I'm second year and just finished my exams) BUT I don't think I passed any (maybe 1)! If I stay I've got to find a placement for a year and then survive two more years plus the rest of this one, but if I leave I've got to do at least three years somewhere else and start over.......oh, and my girlfriend has applied to unis in this area to be near me and I don't want to mess her about. Sometimes life sucks!

That sounds a very familiar situation... Apart from the life sucking, it takes a bigger man to admit he has chosen the wrong course, than one who sticks it out for 5 years, then realises at the end of it that they don't like it! Best to make the decision now!

What course is it? I am Mech Eng and the step up from first to second year is phenominal!!!
