Just some questions to anyone at Corpus Christi at the moment:

1. How hard is it to get into the Chapel Choir? I'm currently in a church choir at the moment, and I would love to continue this tradition at university, but I don't intend to apply for a choral scholarship. Would it still be possible to sing in the Chapel Choir?
2. How rigorous is the rehearsal schedule if you're a chorister?
3. The other thing is: do you have to be Christian to be able to sing in the Chapel Choir? I'm a Hindu, and it's not a problem at the church that I sing at, but I was wondering if the college had any particular policy concerning this.
4. Are there any other choral groups, which are slightly more informal, but still do concerts and sing Western music (either classical or modern) at Corpus?

5. Are there internet connections in all of the rooms? I've tried looking for this on the website, but I can't seem to find it. The Oxford website says 'Telephones and network connections are available in all rooms on the main site and in the Liddell Building'; if this is the case, which possible accommodation buildings are excluded from this?

I don't go there yet, but I know they're pretty musical, they have a really dedicated choir and musical scholarships.

Yeah, I know they have organ scholarships. It's just I want to know how musical they are: because if they're seriously musically intense, I might not be able to join the choir, especially since (i) I intend to read a science-related subject at unviersity - I just don't think I'll have the time to manage both and (ii) if they're really musical, the choir places will go to their choral scholars, which means I won't be able to join as I'm not applying for choral scholarship.

Which is what lead me onto my next question: if I can't do choir, are there any other Western classical choral groups which aren't so rigorous or have such stringent entry requirements?

thats a good question. I love singing, but I'm doing PPP. from what I can remember I think there might be several choirs, of varying degrees... but sorry i'm not answering your question! I'll be quiet....

Not at all.
Regarding choir: no, you don't have to be Christian, all faiths are welcome. As far as I know you don't even need to have any experience as a singer; I only ever sing in the shower and I was invited to join.. They do really great stuff like travel to North America for choir trips(!) so if I had the time I certainly would have joined, and would encourage any slightly self-doubting freshers to give it a try.

Also for those who like to sing other non-choral related stuff there's music nights being organised in the cellar all the time, so really there's opportunities to get involved everywhere.

I'm at Corpus.

In answer to some of the questions: Chapel Choir is non-auditioning. There is an ethernet connection in every room.
does any one here do history at corpus? what's studying at corpus like in general?
Yes. History is superb. Two excellent tutors. Both carrying out cutting edge research (both had papers created in their speciality in the last twelve months). More importantly, they are both able to bring you to the cutting edge in tutorials, discussing recently published and even unpublished articles and ideas

They're also very good on the technical side: they answer querries quickly, and they organise lots of study skills sessions, including for revision and exams.

This is reflected in results. We've averaged about 50% Firsts in both Prelims and Finals the last few years, whereas the university average is 25-30%. Last year we had 5 Firsts out of 7 in Finals, including two people who came joint second in the uni for History & Politics

Oh, and they spend the social budget on students
Thanks for the info, how many students do you have doing history and politics in total, thats what i'd apply for? what are the tutor's specialities?
2 guaranteed places each year for MHP (so in total, six). The specialties are US foreign policy in the C19 and England during the Wars of the Roses period. Of course they both teach outside those specialities. For example, John Watts, who's the Senior History tutor, has published, as far as I know, on stuff ranging from the late 14th to the late 16th century, on England and in Europe.

Regarding Politics, I'm behind the times as I no longer do it. We used to have a tutor called Giovanni Ciapoccia (may have mis-spelt that) who apparently published a very important book on right wing politics in Europe. Or something. Probably find out more through a judicious use of Google.
Thanks, corpus is sounding better and better.
Any prospective Corpus student that plays drums, bass, guitar or can sing, please contact me. We were supposed to have got a band in the works, but one of the few drummers in our college has left and is due to come back next Trinity Term. Which sucks. Also, someone willing to play bass for us is finishing this year. It would just help to know if any new students are into that scene.

Hello there. I want to apply to do ancient and modern history, and Corpus Christi looks rather nice and friendly. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Is it particularly easy/difficult to get it?

Also, I just got the following grades; will they be good enough?
History: 269 = A
English: 286 = A
French: 287 = A
Biology: 213 = B
Plus an A in general studies, but that doesn't really count. I'm going to drop biology next year. Will it be a huge disadvantage to me to do that? I figure it's not really relevant, and besides, I'm terrible at it.

Thanks.

I'm told that Corpus is one of the best colleges for Classics or Ancient History (I'm a PPEist myself, so I can't be wholly certain). I would not have thought that dropping Biology would be a problem. However, a B at AS level might be a disadvantage, if the other applicants have straight As.

If you like the look of Corpus, go for it. The odds are that if the college you apply to doesn't want you, you'll be interviewed at at least one other college. I know people who didn't get into Corpus (for Classics), but were accepted at Somerville and Merton.

Thanks! I would retake the B if I thought it was do any good, but sadly it was a solid B all round. If I'd ever had any dreams of being a scientist, they would have been dashed on the rocks - fortunately, I don't. :p:

It's strange the way the pooling works. I thought that Merton was generally more competitive than Corpus?

Anyway, thanks for the help. I will probably give it a go, since I've got nothing to lose except a slot on my UCAS form.

Merton (as far as I know) generally is more competitive than Corpus. But this was for Classics, which Corpus has a brilliant reputation for.

Like you say - you've nothing to lose save a spot on your UCAS form.

I read PPE at Corpus, and I think it's excellent. I really need more specific questions though.

Grades wise, ideally you need AAA. For reference, I achieved AAAA at A-level and had 8A*s and 1A at GCSE.
I'm applying for PPE to Corpus this year!

I'm from California, so everything in the UK system is fairly new for me, but it's exciting..

How's Corpus for PPE, and especially international politics?

I really love PPE at Corpus - the tutors are excellent. We tend to have a fair few students from the States - in my year we have a chap from California, who did his first degree at Stanford, and we run an exchange programme with Stanford through which Stanford students come to Corpus for a term.

I haven't really studied any international politics, since I prefer theory. But you will be taught well, whichever college you apply to.
